The SLS special of Sunday 29th January sees Pannier tanks 4645 and 8791 pausing at Bala before heading up the valley for a view of the works for construction of Llyn Celyn dam at Tyddyn Bridge Halt. A dash over Cwm Prysor viaduct and a glimpse of the Afon Prysor below sees our approach to the outskirts of Llan Festiniog at Teiliiau-Bach and the waving crowds gathered on Manod Station to see us ...

    This brilliant, thank you. Am I right that at 7:55 we arrive at Tyddyn Bridge Halt, and then through the valley that is now covered by the reservoir? At 8:25 we are looking back towards what is now the dam?

    Excited schoolboys in short trousers and school caps dashing around not wanting to miss anything, men in jackets, ties and raincoats with flat caps or trilby's wedged onto their heads. Ladies in their best Sunday apparel, scarves on their heads, grabbing the arms of the little ones whenever they came close to the platform edge. To me these scenes are heart-breaking, repeated dozens of times in many locations from one end of the country to the other as the worlds greatest railway network was reduced to a shadow of its former self. If only this route or even part of it were still available I, and many others would ride it simply for the experience and a fine day out.

    Evocative video - thank you for posting it. Is there any progress on re-opening, or did the project die due to the issues with the previous group's problems with Network Rail (they used too big a digger, or something, and lost track access)?

      @@balatoblaenaurailway3468 I shall certainly check that out! This line has incredible potential as a tourist line, doubly rail-linked as it is at Blaenau. The scenery is gorgeous, especially on the shelf beyond Trawsfynydd, and whilst it may seem a pipe dream, trains to Arenig and even Capel Celyn Halt with a visitor centre there with boating, surfing, food/café etc., would be utterly amazing. The Welsh Highland has shown it's possible to drive a railway where people said it couldn't be done, so all power to this project, say I. Think big, even though it'll of course have to be done in small steps. 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻

      unfortunately they flooded the valley with a dam to make the reservoir

    • @arthurbaldwin1804
      @arthurbaldwin1804 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was closed primarily because the government had got the bit between its teeth and despite all opposition were determined to flood the valley and village of Capel Celyn. My family travelled this line regularly and it was well used. They wanted to close the Barmouth Ruabon line so by loping off bit’s they brought it to a point when there wasn’t enough use. Bala is a major tourist destination now with a heritage line it could be a bigger one.

      @@arthurbaldwin1804Is it true they built the road around the reservoir to prevent the line being rerouted? The better halfs family originate from that neck of the woods (now all in anglesey) & that's what her granddad told us when we went for a weekend camping in bala.

    It's interesting to see the contrast of the last train running alongside the areas future being created by the dam works in progress. It is also interesting to see the amount of people that turned out in the pouring rain to witness the end to their railway history taking place and it was quite common to do that in those days. I was 9 years of age then and so many of these older people will have passed on, I'm surprised that not more of the ones that are still here have viewed and commented on your highly interesting videos.

    A future service could be operated over this NR owned track using a mainline ticketed 14xx loco and a couple of Auto-Coaches, perhaps out-based from the GWS Didcot Rly Centre's fleet and operated under one of the mainline Charter Train TOC's licence and safety case, and have the train 'garaged' and serviced at the site of the old Llan Ffestiniog station goods yard. It can be done quite cost effectively. (1466 would be a good candidate for the job!)

      @levelcrossing150 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Sam_Green____4114 I think we should encourage the reopening of this line as it is totally different from the FR by being standard gauge. It passes through some of the most beautiful countryside and has a connection with Network Rail and the FR. It even has the great potential for for a breathtaking line to Bala if it should ever be extended. Families might not be able to afford both and why would they want to travel on two lines during the same visit anyway? They are more likely to come back another time which is also good for the area. It's the type of area visitors love and will return on other occasions.
