Retrieval Practice - Residency at Austin Peay State University Day 1
I start a timer, tell them what were going to do, and start talkin' all sciency.
Day one of the APSU Residency. Started in the morning with the University Choir (thanks Dr. Foster!). Then just two more things String Studio and Youth Orchestra rehearsal.
Here is a little clip. I started them on spaced repetition without explaining it. That came later, but wanted to get it started, get used to the weird way it feels.
They just sang the first four measures of some new music. That is always a great introduction for large group rehearsal. Make the beginnings easy to play perfectly at the drop of a hat. Easy to do, and the players will feel it. Then let retrieval practice take over rehearsal like a kudzu vine. 🤪

    Hey Gregg, I'm one of your Superlearning students from MU. I might want to punch the wall, or Rodger Waters? No, I'd rather punch Dave Gilmour. Rodger speaks up for the world's people against the evil empire, while cowardly Dave and his Zionist wife defend the status quo. Still working on some of Dave's solos though.

      It is from a guitar sight reading method I wrote for the high school guitar program I used to teach in. I couldn’t find any method that taught the basics. Unfortunately, it isn’t published. I’ll do it someday when the time is right, but right now I’d have to do it on my own and maybe sell 20! Not worth the effort without a publisher, but maybe…. In the meantime try method books, which is what I did before my method. New notes are usually introduced a few at a time with exercises in long note values then a few more that get slightly more complex. Read through the introductory sections in 3-5 methods, then the next, and so on. Also, you could use some really easy music, like single line easy etudes (just remove the bass or treble line if you can’t find any single line, and put four counts between every note to train looking ahead (make all the notes whole notes). It is all about training looking ahead first.

      Thanks, I'm so glad. Yes, the coaching stuff lasts a lifetime. Instrumental teaching is an ongoing thing over months and years, as it necessarily should be. The learning to practice thing (which is a secret that shouldn't be a secret) takes a few sessions to give a foundation to explore for a lifetime! Practice coaching is necessary companion teaching to the learning of an instrument. Someday it will seem normal, right now it is kind of revolutionary.

    The artist's curse is a great reminder -- and makes total sense. When you talked about asking a student what he or she would like to do better and have been met with a blank stare, I recognized myself -- didn't even need a mirror. :)

      Great to hear! Now act on it! Do it in your next practice. Understand you might not find anything the first few times. Don't beat yourself up because trying to find stuff and failing is success in LEARNING to find stuff. Little by little it will open up. So awesome you've found that!

      You didn’t read anders Ericsson’s book, did you? He exactly said that just more practicing is just a naive practice. Then there’s a purposeful practice, and one that’s more efficient is deliberate practice. Why is it hard for you to understand that 10000 hours practicing it’s not about deliberate practice. Deliberate practice is not time + practice, it’s methods that u implement in you’re practice

    I like your approach. The carrot is much more motivating than the stick for long-term habits. Sure, being chased by pirhanas is good for a quick adrenaline-fueled swim, but to make something a permanent part of your life you gotta enjoy something about it. When I look back to the things I am proud of acheiving, it was fun and satisfaction with myself that fueled me to keep the challenge going. For months I was hard with myself telling me I 'must' practice for hours a day - and I practiced zero. One day I did 3 hours and it was quite tiring. So instead I recently told myself 'Keep your goals grand, but take small steps toward them, because it's better than the current situation of stagnation'. These past few days I easily did 30-55m per day and I am seeing steady progress. I had to remain humble and promise myself that in the end I *will* practice a lot, but that the climb there must be gradual for me to stick to it. Orienting selective attention is a fear for me, and my solution is exactly as you said, to get started, to ask myself 'How small does the action need to be, for me to make it right now?' as if I am giving myself a blank check but insisting that I sign it. So if an entire piece seems difficult, I say learn just one hand part. If it's too fast, play it slow. Most things in life can be broken down.

    Hi Gregg, I think your videos are absolutely fantastic. I am a teacher and you have given me a lot to think about to help my students learn. I think your videos will be even better if you get a better sound system. There is a lot of echo in the current setup that muffles the sound. Your content and presentation are absolute gold, so they deserve a sound quality to match. Just a suggestion.

    • @gregggoodhart-thelearningc6699
      @gregggoodhart-thelearningc6699 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind words and the suggestion. I'm using a Blue Yeti, but the ceiling is 10 feet high, large room and hard floors. Problem is I've got nowhere else that looks decent! I guess I could go to the beach😀 Maybe if I move the mic closer. I've also got a couple of AKG's I could try. Maybe the microphone on the airpods will work better, but I hate wearing those. I'll try some experiments. Any suggestions from anybody are welcome as well. Thanks again.

      You'd be surprised, I know I was! Nobel Prize winning researcher Daniel Kahneman's book, "Thinking Fast, and Slow," is an in depth look at how humans make bad decisions all the time while thinking they've they've weighed all the options/facts etc. It is a great resource for learning how to get past that with others and ourselves so that real learning can occur. Thanks for the comment.

    My challenge is Improv over a Jazz Standard. But, it just occurred to me - If I can play the original melody, why can't I make up my own melody? After all, what do you think a Contrafact is!

    • @gregggoodhart-thelearningc6699
      @gregggoodhart-thelearningc6699 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, Mark, why not add a few of the notes in between the melody notes to start. Listen to the real basic improv Louis Armstrong did. There is a reason his stuff is the foundation of jazz. The biggest mistake I see made in learning/teaching improv, and I made the same mistake for years, is giving/trying too much. Break it down into bite sized ideas and build didactically from there. I've been thinking about doing something about this as I've gotten more that a few similar thoughts from people. Anyone else interested in this?
