TIG weld repair on Audi R8 exhaust tips ***saving the owner £££***
มุมมอง 809ปีที่แล้ว
Owner of an Audi R8 had the exhaust tips powder coated black, but unfortunately one of the brackets broke off and was lost. I was asked to fabricate a new bracket and weld it on which saved the owner buying a new exhaust tip for approx. £300. This simple repair saved the owner a few hundred pounds.

What rod did you use and settings pleas
What die grinder are you using? It seems super heavy duty and barely slows as you are cutting away
Super
Thanks
What size tungsten and filler do you use ?
2.4mm tungsten for everything I do and 1.2mm filler for thin wall stainless to control the puddle better
I have the same welder just started practicing doing the same job. What size tungsten are you using?
Im using 2.4mm tungsten. Its what in use for everything, aluminium, steel, stainless, titanium.
@Smffab cheers I have been using 1.6 and 2.4 trying to see what works better. It's not as easy as it looks
@jamesrickwood6333 practice and watching plenty on welding videos helps haha
Looks like the Integra's intake manifold.
Yeah it’s is the Honda RBC manifold very common upgrade to have on the k20 engine
WHY do you stick the tungsten end of each weld? Thats a No No!!
Stick the tungsten? How do you mean?
He’s likely not sticking his tungsten in the end of the weld, but rather resting it on the weld as it cools so gas coverage is consistent.
Yes that’s exactly right 👍🏼
Wow, what skill. Pleasure watching this!
Thanks for watching!
Very nice craftsmanship!
Thank you. And thanks for watching and commenting.
Where can I get that clamp jig you using
i got mine from Gizfab, check them out on youtube or instagram. other people do make them tho.
Perfect Job and nice work but wouldn't the labor to do that work be more than the cost of a new manifold?
Probably half price. New manifolds are £400+, used they are £330 ish. I got this one for £150 and use it on my own car but I would have probably charged around £150 for this repair if I was doing it for someone else.
Nice job.
Thanks!
jetzt aber noch glasperlen strahlen
Sorry I don’t understand.
What’s your gas flow ? Looks amazing
Thanks. I think for stainless steel and this cup size I set it to about 35CFH
Is this dual 2" to 1 2.5?
1.75” primaries into 2”
probably flows better than before too lol
Nice work!
Thanks 🙏
FFS that’s a repair I would be 100% satisfied with. Very nice work!
Thanks, appreciate it.
Really nice 👍
Thanks for watching!
Won’t last much. Every engineer knows that welding strength can be around 40-60% of the original strength. Visually can be the same but not strength wise.
That’s not true, it can be weaker, same, or even stronger. Depends on welding process, quality and cleanliness of base material, filler rod used, quality of welds etc etc. This intake has been on my turbo AWD 400 bhp Honda civic for best part of a year and it’s crack free and running fine.
I would not grind the outside welding unless it hinders , it´ll be stronger
It’s strong enough without it. Been on my car for months now.
If only my tig welder had an ac function 😂 I can try to weld it out with the spool gun but have a feeling that will be a mess. May just go the jb weld route
So you have to super skilled and have 100k in tools. Easier to just buy a new one!!!
Im self taught and only 5k worth of equipment
Top 👍
Thanks
What vise is that?
Just a cheap eBay one that you can set to different angles. Think it was about £30.
use atf for oil on that carbide burr .it want gum up
Thanks for the tip!
I'm a commercial subsea diver and welder. Yes, we all can weld underwater, No, we're not underwater welders, and no, we don't make hundreds of thousands per year. Unless your company does nothing but ship husbandry, you will not weld much at all underwater. Any big welding projects will be done on deck and lowered into the water. Welding in any condition is easy anyway. Also, I am a certified machinist in both manual and CNC, mill and lathe. Now, into the video. Yes, he did a good job. Prep and set up is everything. This didn't happen very quickly. This took time and skill. This work and quality is not cheap or inexpensive. My labor alone would cost more than a new or remanufactured part. Reason? Because you're paying for my skill, not my time. Buy a new part. Problem solved.
Awesome
For sale , lightly used No issues 😂
As good as new
Hate welding cast, seems like it's always soaked in some oil.
Thankfully, This was very clean.
"Sir I came in for an oil change, why did you repair my intake manifold and port and polish it?"
Hahaha!
Now lets try that with a spool gun.
Good luck 😂
Nice work!
Thank you
I wish I know these technique when I broke a mounting ear off my AC compressor 15 years ago.
You can learn anytime
Wow fixed it better than new
Thanks
Top job !
Thanks!
Did you have those purge blocks made ?
I just made them myself from some flat aluminium bar, then drilled the holes to bolt down and drilled the purge holes too. The materials is really very flat and no need to have these machined. They have worked well for me on many manifold builds.
@@Smffab I like that, looks like they work well. Thanks for the reply
A man who knows and knows he knows...he is a a man to know. Excellent work. UK.

@@Smffab 🤣😂
A very nice finishing job. Keep up the good job😊
Thanks, appreciate the comment. Thanks for watching.
Dod u have to pre heat the rocker cover to stop ot cracking ?
It’s mainly to get rid of moisture, and bit of preheat helps my machine get going, it’s only 160amps
Excelent job!
Thank you
Probably could have got a used manifold for cheaper. But what if that was an antique or your nowhere near a good source of junk vehicles. The fact that you can make a repair like that is nice. Wish I had his skills
These manifolds are quite expensive used, I saved about £200 doing this and made a video about how to do it. Appreciate your comment, and thanks for watching.
