Disagree - and I train and own Malinois. OVER Socialization can actually cause these issues. Gradual socialization, when they're at the right age and the right frame of mind, slowly is the best way. They also don't "need" any amount of running a day and can be left alone... if they are trained right. Malinois need mental stimulation more than physical. They need a JOB of some sort, even if its just doing some training routine repeatedly. They're more dog than most people can handle, because they try to over supply the physical side and not the mental side. They're really a dog for people who really, really like dogs and can pour their heart and soul into them.

Goid job on your calmness Chris. A Belgian Malinois is too much dog for 90% of people! This biggest mistake most people make with a malinois. Is not socializing early .around people, children and other dogs. Prime Socialization period is 8 to 16 weeks. This is not the dogs fault! It's not bad breeding.. It's the owners. Now this breed is a full on fad 2022. Breaks my heart to see all these magnificent animals end up being destroyed. When not socialized.they become almost un adoptable.

Chris…I’ll say it. The vast majority of folks should not own a Malociraptor. That owner should not own a Malociraptor. Great job conditioning/introducing Nation to the E-Collar. Bad breeding + bad owner = Nation punching you every time you turn from him. Also like how you introduced and incorporated a pack dynamic to Nation. His attention and focus was on you (the pack leader)….hope rest of training went well. How’s Nation doing now? Not euthanized yet after returning to the same sh!tty/weak ownership situation?

It’s not, it’s called an E-collar, they don’t shock or hurt the dog in any way. There are 2 settings, one vibrates and the other is a stim. It’s the same thing as a tens unit that people use. The settings go from 0-100 and I’m sure if you turned it up to 100 it’d shock, but no one in their right mind would turn it up that much. Most dog only need it between 4 and 6 and in cases like this you may turn it up to 25 depending on the situation. People can’t feel it until about a 12 and its a very small tingle, I’d know because I have put it on my own neck to test it out. It didn’t scare the dog, it’s a correction, dogs need corrections, they aren’t humans, you can’t explain things to them. Dogs correct each other with teeth, growling and biting. A dog snapping at another dog would be the same as me telling someone to leave me alone. So in order to correct a dog, the best tools are either a prong, or an E-collar. And since clearly the prong hadn’t been working, he used a, E-collar. (Although the prong would have worked if it had been placed properly.) Don’t go around saying stuff you don’t know.

Flooding a dog like that can be a dangerous proposition. He is terrified during the first part of the video and forcing him to 'deal' with it can backfire. A better option might have been to work on something he likes to do (say positional cues like heel, cover, block; or action cues like sit, down, stand) from far away while working him up closer as his level of confidence increases. Encouraging a gameness to work under a distraction is easier for him to repeat habitually (i.e.: in the future under different distractions), vs. forcing him to endure and tamp down fear, which can resurface later when he's fearful of saxophones instead of guitars, or drums instead of singing. Training through flooding is a quick-fix, but it doesn't get to the root of his fear and it doesn't give him options for managing his fear.

@@chriscastro4022 - Absolutely! :) I think if you had moved him a distance away and worked on some of his training so that he could focus on YOU and not on the cause of the fear, he would have overcome it more easily. Granted, my way can take longer, but it looks like you took him there and spent some time allowing him to settle down, and then maybe even took him back a couple more times, right? You totally invested the time in working with him, I just wonder if you had allowed him to learn to settle a distance away and moved up in small steps would have been easier on him than flooding him in the beginning. All distraction training is a form of flooding, but it's easiest on the dog if the flooding is more of a trickling, know what I mean? I get that it's not like you came in and plunked him on center stage or anything ;) but I think he would have had a more successful initial reaction if you would have given him even MORE distance at first. That's all. Not trying to be critical. I don't know whose service dog he is, but I appreciate that you are taking the time to work with him and help him get over his fear! :)

You are reforsing the behavior wen the dog goes to his owner. The dog is giving avoidance behavior and you are reforsing those... It's a error to keep the owner close to the dog in this case cause you are adding another conflict in the dog... Just see wen you got the dog in a distance from the owner ... He started to work Whit you... But the minute you let him go back again he started to bite the leash and going to the ground.... To avoid you. I think I know what you mean. I don't think you are in error, but your style is probably different from mine and that's okay. I don't mind that the dog is conflicted or distracted by his owner being close. I want the dog to give me a hard time because he gives his owner a hard time. I want to show her what to do when he acts this way. My private lessons are more to teach owners than train the dogs. He may go to the ground, or bite and pull on the leash as many times as he wants and I will counter it every time until he learns that my persistence is stronger than his, no matter who is around us. After time and repetitions the dog responds quicker, and will not just be acquainted; we'll know each other very well.
