table top rice huller, can be powered by hand, bike or motor
New version of a table top rice huller using Piranha rollers. The rollers are urethane with a hardness of 90 durometers. Go to ricehuller.org for more information. This is a DIY video. It can be powered by hand, bike, or motor. I make no money off of any adds.

Low volume rice huller using urethane sheets on steel rollers powered by hand, bike or motor.

If no 90 durometer roller is available or hulling rice, this video shows how to build a rice huller or rice husker using steel rollers covered with a 90 durometer urethane sheet. I achieved a 99% hulling rate after two passes with no separation after the 1st pass.

separating paddy from hulled rice

We used our short grain rice separator to separate medium grain rice from the unhulled rice (paddy) by taking advantage of the difference in specific gravity of the two materials rather than just the 1/8" hole size of the stainless steel sheet.

Brill Engineering was asked to verify if our home made impact huller could de-husk Kernza ® , a perennial wheat. The grain was submitted by Sprout Labs which plans to create and sell kits based on this design. We were very successful reaching around 85% hulling rate at 45 pounds per hour. I for one super really really appreciate your ongoing project. I am a home grower and the biggest issue is hulling my rice. My first season, I was so excited that I could even grow rice, that I didn't think about hulling at all. My husband is an engineer so this is going on our winter project list. Thank you so much for all your hard work. Thank you to Dave for the website admin. That is really appreciated as well. I think a lot of people are quite interested in growing other grains like wheat, oats, rye, barley, as well as rice, so we need all the help we can get. ☺

sometimes the unit is not operable while hulling rice and I think the chain jumps a tooth because it is not under constant pulling, when this happens the chain length between the rollers shortens and doesn't allow the between the rollers to widen. To stop this a put block just under the spot where the chain is contacting the slow sprocket. now it can's jump a toot.

@14:35 and following: Cutting the ends of the urethane sheeting "on the bias" - say, 45 degrees, rather than square to the width of the strip - might hold up better and be less abrupt as the rollers are turned against each other. Sanding drums/sleeves are often made this way. Also, a strong contact cement (Barge is a common brand name in the US, used in commercial shoe repair and the like) might stick the urethane strips down to the rollers pretty well, but still be removable when the sheeting needs to be replaced. I am entertaining building a small grain dehuller for Duborskian rice, a dry land rice which reputedly grows well in northern temperate climates.

Can this be used for wheat after threshing?

If an impact huller is used commercially then it should work. I haven't tested wheat but I might have time next month to buy and run some. I'll comment here if I do.
