Create Your Own Diggle Stick at Home: No Cuts or Edits
In this video, I'll show you how to make a simple yet effective tool called a "diggle stick." It's a long, thin stick with a pointed end that makes it easy to poke holes in the ground for planting seeds.
Benefits of using a diggle stick:
Saves time and effort
Prevents dirt from getting under your fingernails
Helps you plant seeds more accurately
I did cut a minute or two when I was retrieving a tool, but otherwise, no cuts or speeding up the video.

Have you ever tried 3-2-1 finish?
มุมมอง 1.6Kปีที่แล้ว
I learned about this finish from a fine furniture artist, Wendy Maruyama. It's a good, soak in, type of finish. It takes a little longer to apply but gives great results! 1 part boiled linseed oil 2 parts synthetic Marine Spar Varnish 3 parts turpentine

I mill some redwood(?) my friend gave me. I think it used to be for a raised bed garden. I've got a project in mind which it think this wood will be able to fulfill, stay tuned.

Excellent effort! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, I was fiddling around with a couple Sorby shisels and the Tormek turning setup for the first time tonight, and you've cleared up a couple things for me. First: That even if you measure the cutting angle and set according to the "Tormek book", it isnt going to be perfect the first time. I was thinking I was doing something wrong. Also, you can use the TTS100 to setup the honing eheel also. Thanks!
Glad I could help
Which jig setting do you use for that grind?
Hi, When I first started sharpening bowl gouges with the Tormek I used the settings "2, 65, A". It was close the factory grind and worked pretty well. Later, I decided I wanted a little more swept back grind and switched to "2, 75, A". The latter is what I was using in the video.
You did a nice job with the measuring cups. I have done a number of them and am currently working on a set using Paduak.
Thanks, it was a fun, quick project. I do like the grain on Olive wood!
Love your work thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the kind words.
Beautifully crafted, truly said about Olive Wood, it got a distinguished smell. Thanks for sharing your work with us.
Thank you very much!
When I saw a mortise on each end I thought you were gonna go to the band saw and cut it in half to make 2 bowls! Nice resin color choice. 😊
Successful holding of the piece is half the battle. I had to work out a way to hold it and create another holding point in the orientation I had planned for. Thanks, the color had just the right amount of transparency to show off the tinsel.
Nice
Thank you muchly
Looks very cool! I look that ribbon
Tinsel mostly works out well. Don't put in too much though, resin doesn't stick well to it and too much can cause instability.
Cool bowls. I love the final shots
Thanks! I like how I got 2 very different feeling styles from essentially the same blank.
Great Work !
Thanks!
Very nice.but you have taken making a simple little toy into something quite complicated
I guess that's just what it took for me to make my idea happen. You're probably right, there are easier ways to do things, I can only go with what I know. Thanks for watching!
Nicely done.
Thanks Ram!
👍
Thx!
Great idea!
I wish I could take credit for having the idea at the outset, but it came to me as I was working along. Turners have a somewhat justified reputation for flying by the seat of our pants. 😀
Thank you for the pen ❤
You’re welcome 😊
Absolutely beauitiful!!! I would LOVE to use something like that when creating!
Thank you. Good tools make the work go easier, beautiful tools make you feel good. Win, win!
Watching you fill the ink at the end has just made me feel old 😂 very cool though thanks for sharing
Yeah, I know what you mean. But, I thought there might be some viewers wondering "What's a fountain pen?" Darn, now I feel old too. :)

wow you’re a modern renaissance man. turner, guitarist, youtuber…what can’t you do?? 🤪 happy holidays
I read a lot, keeps the mind agile. :) Thanks, and happy holidays to you too!
Pretty ❤️ Merry Christmas 🎄
Thank you, and I hope your Christmas was wonderful.
Cool little trees. 👍
Thank you. I was also pleased how they came out.
They are so sweet 💟
Thanks Laura!
👍
:)
that’s a shame the resin didn’t work out, they looked eggcellent 😎
That comment was quite a pun-ishment for a failed project. Yeah, I thought the blanks looked great. I'll have to try another project with pine cones in resin. I'm out of pine cones right now but they'll start dropping soon enough and I'll have a nice bunch.
Very cool. 👍
Thanks 👍

Thank you very much, glad you like it.
Beautiful piece!! Great way to use the tenon as the handle.
Thank you Gayle. I don't usually see turners using the tenon as a handle but I wanted to try it.
Beautiful!🌹
Thank you! 😊
I bet the wife has a huge collection of these type gems...........lovely work!
Heh, yeah, almost every flat surface of the house has something round on it.
Nice work.
Thanks, it was a fun day project.
Aaawwwww childhood memories right there, so cool thanks for sharing ❤️
I had the "made in Taiwan" version when I was a kid. Cheap, for sure, but it never broke. Glad you enjoyed it.
Gotta have my hubby make something like that !! Beautiful work, Sir!!!
give him some flowers and a link to the video (hint, hint)
You could not keep them in the house so you put them in the garage? I bet those cats didn't like being in the garage? LOL!!😆Great video, keep them coming.
Oh no, the grammar police have found me again! Thanks
i love it. the tinsel adds some really cool depth and texture to the clear spots. sort of giving me some gemstone / geode vibes. very cool 👍
Thank you Dan, glad you liked it.
Wearing a watch and a ring while your are turning might set you up for a severe injury. Having a finger pulled out of joint is an ugly accident
After a few minutes turning I can't read the watch anyway.
very unique idea, i love how the lines from the mat are visible in the finished piece it adds some neat texture to the 3d effect. could you have glued on waste blocks instead of using tenons to preserve some size and volume? i don’t really know the pros and cons of each method i just enjoy watching and learning ☺️
Thanks Dan. Yes, I believe you could use waste blocks as you suggest. I don't know if I'd end up making it larger or just conserve resin. Either way, it's a good idea.
Beautiful! Nice to see someone else showing their first trial piece! Liked and subscribed 👍 -Heather 🇨🇦
Thanks Heather. I like trying out new ideas. It helps keep the hobby fresh and interesting.
That is absolutely beautiful. Great job!
Thanks James, I'm glad you liked it.
wow it came out excellent! sometimes flowers and other organic material doesn’t end up looking very nice in resin but this absolutely does. one of those fake tea candles on the inside would look really cool too i bet!
Thank you. You're right, many times I've tried something out in resin and it just doesn't work out like I had hoped.
I have to agree with Jon. Your hand between the work and tool rest is one of the most dangerous things I’ve seen done on TH-cam. You are the only one responsible for your safety in your shop. Having said that, you are putting this out for public viewing. Someone with much less experience could watch this, mimic your technique, and be badly injured. You do excellent work. But please be more careful with what you put out for viewers.
Thank you, and Jon, for the advice. I'm the first to admit I have no formal training in turning and I'm grateful for folks like you looking out for me.
Love the work beautiful , but how much did it cost in resin as there seems to be lots of waste ,and as a poor pleb would be intersted to.know
Thank you. You're correct, the resin is costly. I believe I spent $50-$60 in resin in this project. I honestly didn't expect it to use that much when I started, there was more voids in this wood than I knew going into it. Sometimes you can alleviate some of the cost by putting waste blocks of cheap pine or similar in areas you know will be turned away in the final product. This project didn't lend itself to that technique though.
@@pellikan64 thank you 👍
that was very good, don't you find it is more difficult to have you guard so far away from your project?
Thank you. I have one carbide tool which has the capability to set the cutting edge at different angles. While that's nice, the unfortunate aspect of this tool is that the portion I loosen and tighten to make the angle change utilizes the first ~1.5 inches directly behind the cutter. Therefore the flat part of the tool which would set on the tool rest is set back from the cutting edge. This necessitates setting the tool rest further back than I normally would. Yes, it makes it slightly more difficult.
Beautiful result. I think the initial vibration on the lathe was caused by the different weights of the wood and resin. I once turned a winged bowl which acted like a propellor. At one point I thought it was going to fly out the workshop door. I anticipated Air Traffic Control saying "Unidentified lathe state your intentions".
Thank you. That's more or less the conclusion I came to as well. Dense solid resin v super dry wood.... No contest. Good thing I don't live near the airport!
Made a pine cone resin bowl turned out okay for the first one this was a beautiful work of turning thanks so much for the video
Thank you very much. I've always liked the look of pine cone/resin projects. I've got a couple cones in the garage and I'll get there, hopefully soon. Thanks for helping me remember the cones are there, just waiting.
It's hard to hear you talk with that music going.
Thank you for letting me know. My wife mentioned the same thing. I hope I'm getting better at my editing and future video content will be better.
Gorgeous piece. Beautiful little keepsake.
Thank you. I'm so glad you like it.
That was oddly interesting, nice to see how you keep things sharp thankyou
I'll take "oddly interesting" over "deadly dull" any day. glad you enjoyed it.
@@pellikan64 i just find these things not only interesting but relaxing too
Interesting results. Please rethink how your making that straight edge slice on the bandsaw , make a cradle jig or use electric chainsaw to make that . Your asking for stitches and kinked bandsaw blades otherwise
Thanks for the tip, I'll look into a cradle jig. Although I didn't mention it in the video, I had it screwed to a stabilizing piece of wood which straddles and rides on the fence. Honest, it was safer than it appeared.
