Leatherman Bond: Fatal flaw??
The new Leatherman Bond was perfect for my edc needs, until it was wasn’t. Why? And can it be fixed?

solution = buy a Rebar :D
I just received onw from amazon, recently and immediately returned it. Love my wave and I have a sog power pint
You explained this better than others I've seen, it's by design. I have a Fuse and the blade is too loose or worn or something but it has no cut out and that helps and I could tighten pivot too and it's not new, Bond is new. It seems problematic. So now I'm considering a Curl or trying to find an old Sideclip... Will they or have they fixed this or addressed this?
Hmm weird
Leatherman does not like brits
Are you able to explain the problem to a leatherman tech?
I think the reason it’s loose for the first few degrees is because it makes it easier to grab the more recessed tools on the multi tool. But they simply didn’t see the problem with it when In design. Personally I don’t see a problem with it, just be more aware when flipping it open, but if you can’t do that then just bend the tensioner on that side down a hair so it has constant tension on the blade. It will affect the easy access of the more recessed tools but it will fix your “problem”
Thank you very much for highlighting.
Did leatherman ever fix this blade issue?
Yeah huge design flaw. I did the same thing with my squirt. After a while those blades don't stay fully locked in and you can stab yourself in the leg or hand. Went back to the micra which is a near perfect design as far as what you keep in your pocket with your keys. Also I've actually swapped to Victorinox these days after being a leatherman fan for years. I still have like 10 models of their stuff. But swapped my multitool edc to the spirit X, and my edc pocket to the Ranger. Why you may ask? The steel. The steel is just better, and after several failures on my leatherman: warped knife with minor awl use on the wave, I was shocked, but was able to bend it back. Two prybar bends/warps on the free series models, and a file snapped on my Rebar. After that last one, I threw up my hands and went Victorinox, and I'm blown away - same heavy use, and every tool springs back like it was brand new. The steel is just more likely to hold and spring right back. Leatherman's tend to bend and stay. But it warps too easily in my opinion. While I adore the Leatherman designs, I don't really trust the steel as much anymore. Still keep a supertool in my box as a kit knife. But I usually reach for the swiss tool I also have in there (yeah I'm a knife crazed luny), cuz it snaps into a square and I use that a lot. Anyway, yeah great review I was thinking about trying one of these, but was on the fence about it being penknife style and no locky, and how leatherman would do with that design.
Any update? They do nothing?
I simply ground the knife tip to a sheep's foot. Problem solved. Warrenty lost? At this price, not a big deal.
Long video not sure you ever got to a conclusion. I'm pretty sure the knife pulls out slightly to help get the knife out with gloves on. Maybe not worth getting your finger poked but there it is
Correct me if I'm wrong but 'simply' bending that tab with the gap (you were showing) so there's no gap and the tab then presses against the blade, that should fix the problem w/the 'Bond' blade. However bending that tab may be difficult w/o taking the knife apart. Another option is to fabricate a 'shim', maybe out of aluminum to fit under that tab, but you need to secure the shim so you don't loose it, maybe with a lanyard. Also you need to remember to remove the shim every time you open the knife. Also you can grind/round off the end of the sharp tip of the blade but you end up losing a tool. Maybe fabricating a 'cap' for the blade tip will 'wedge' the blade into place against the body of knife when closed, maybe w/blue 3M masking tape that comes off w/o 'gooping' should do the trick & be the easiest/least intrusive 'hack' to 'fix' this problem, or maybe you can fabricate a blade tip cap that just holds on when 'wedged' into the storage cavity, maybe out of a sliver of a plastic milk jug, possible fabricating a triangular 'cap' by folding over the milk jug sliver & melting or gluing it together. Should be real fast & easy to just remove/replace the blade tip 'cap' but you gotta be careful not to loose the cap. I'm thinking maybe a sliver of bicycle innertube may work to wedge the tip of the blade & hold it in place. Leatherman really Botched this design up & this design flaw SHOULD have been EASILY discovered & FIXED before producing these 'Bonds' en masse! It's called 'Quality Control' Leatherman!
Love the Phaeton!
Glad I didn’t buy the Bond for my fiancé. I can’t believe some of the people in the comment section are calling this problem “user error.” How the hell is a clear design flaw user error?
I really wanted this to be my new edc😒
@@name5949 go with a heritage edition PST. It costs a bit more but it’s worth it. Still slip joint tools but much better build quality
Dont spend half the video telling what the video is gonna tell us. Geezus
Thank you for your detailed explanation! I do understand the design issue clearly now. And because of this video I finally noticed that my Wave has a safety lock pin mechanism! Also different solution for my P4 as well. I may sklp purchasing Bond for now... Thanks!
In America customers can even sue Letherman for such tool if someone gets injured. If one lady could sue McDonald for hot coffee, why can't someone sue Leatherman???
Hello there the name is bond Leatherman bond 🤪👍
This tool pisses me off, it’s the only one I can legally carry in the uk and it’s got a major safety problem. Please leatherman fix this tool !
Hello buddy have you got the Leatherman bond yet? Thanks
Great Video.
Hello, congratulations for the detailed analysis . the best example of how to solve this shit is not so much the wave etc, but rather simply the rebar! If we look at the rebar it is practically the same as the bond in its design, with the only difference that the instruments have a block. But the 2 knives on the rebar have a different profile than the other tools, so they remain perfectly locked even when closed. It was enough to copy the profile of the rebar knives on the bond and the problem would not exist. It was a huge mistake of the engineers, rather than of the quality control. The incredible thing is that leatherman doesn't admit it.
They should've made it a wharncliffe.
that cutout's pretty similiar to the rebar. i checked my leatherman rebar - it has a ton of tension so the knife stays shut.
I am so gutted that the leatherman bond has this issue i'd immediately buy one if this was fixed, I can't carry a wave+ as an EDC here in the uk because it has a locking blade, the bond was essentially made to combat this, but its dangerous as is :(
Carry your Wave. No law written by mortal men can take away your God given right to carry whatever you want. That’s why the UK government got away with making such laws. People just obeyed them. The only way for such laws to be overturned is for the people to not comply. You need to carry your Wave and lead the people to do the same. It’s time we all take back our countries and God given rights from our freedom hating governments
I completely agree with you... This tool could have been soooo much better and had massively better tool retention. Sadly they have used PST plans as a cheap way to adhere to the UK and EU knife laws,. So the best leatherman effort, is a tool without any research with UK/EU tool fans. Kinda sad actually! 😔
PST didn't have that cut out and if tight didn't flop out like this unit. I've had a Kick, Fuse and Blast that didn't do this but also a used Fuse that did a little but probably is loose or worn by a lot of use and could be tightened whereas with the Bond it seems by design.
I am not a collector, but I have more multi tools than I can use. I looked at my original PST and my PST II, no retention on those blades. So next I looked at my Kick, Charge, Blast, and Pulse same no blade retention. The Wave and several others have the lock mechanism for the blade, but those blades open to the inside with the plyers exposed, while the PST, PST II, Kick, Fuse, Blast, and Pulse open to the outside with the plyers exposed. One point is the nail nick is on the outside on the original PST and PST II, but on the inside of .the other three tools, the Pulse has an outside nail nick, . I agree that customer service needs to keep the customer informed on the product.
The comparison with the Wave showed that is mostly a user error. On the outside opening tools LM the knife will also not snap back into place and can also, given a loose pivot tension, slip open easily and stay open and cut you. I've never used pliers in the fashion you do. I always have one finger "outside" and one "inside" of the handle, so one finger pushes the pliers open, the other pulls them close. The pulling finger always covers the blade, so no accidental opening. From personal experience I know it can easily be fixed by adjusting the pivot tension. Tension on closed tools mostly comes from pivot tension, not the actual lockbar.
I agree this could easily become a law suit especially as it has been made known to Leatherman!
I recently purchased this tool and upon inspection found the same problem so immediately returned it sorry to say
Good video, new sub here
Great video.. Yes they need to fix this issue.. I agree with ya, I can not gift it to family or friends 👍👍
En este caso,a Leatherman,"se le escapo la tortuga",como decimos aqui en mi pais.Un saludo desde Argentina.
I might still buy it, even with the flaw.
Imagine the slice you would take out of your hand when the blade pops out when you change your grip! Leatherman needs to fix this.
I'm 💯% with you on this one if they made all of the tools open and close the way a victorinox Swiss army knife works this would be a very nice EDC multi tool and it's perfect for other countries where they can't have locking mechanisms on there EDC multi tools i really really like the Leatherman bond for EDC but where all the tools and blade is coming out like that it's a no go zone for me because if you're hand's are could and it's dark at night it's definitely dangerous it's upsetting because it's a fantastic little EDC multi purpose tool people has been waiting for this one for a long time I'm really hoping that they will fix the issue this was a fantastic video i really appreciate you sharing it with us 👍🏻
If that pressure tab was bent in just a little bit more then the knife wouldn't come out anymore.. I actually have already done that to my supertool 200 because the release tabs were loose which corrected that problem. However the Bond isn't worth buying anyway. Get a supertool 300 or a rebar. They are way better! 👍
the supertool can't be carried in most european countries as an EDC, you would be arrested for carrying a locking blade in the uk without "good reason", the bond fixes this issue, but unfortunately as is, is dangerous.
Thanks so much for the deep dive on this. It looks like Leatherman just carried over the "Free" design without the magnets, and this is the result. Since the pliers are not spring-loaded, I can very easily picture the tool shifting around in your hand as you open and close them one-handed ... and if you quickly re-establish your grip when the knife blade is in the wrong position, that will definitely not be fun. I've got several Leatherman tools, and the Rebar is my favorite. I was planning on getting the Bond as a streamlined version of the Rebar, but I'm going to wait and see how Leatherman responds to this issue.
They should pay attention to the Murphy's law, that is, "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong"
Nice torture test
@4:19 If you do this to my new rebar, witch has spring pretension on the blades, its the same result, blade pops out. I agree with Leatherman on this "issue", just learn to use the tool! You're not supposed to be pulling on the blade to open the pliers!
I had yet to experience this issue, opening the knife while using it. But, I am annoyed with the lack of a snap back on the blade like the buck, or the victorinox. Honestly I think the tensioning on the whole tool is wonky. The tools on mine are actually difficult to open up. I don’t hold the tool the same way you do so I think that’s how I’ve avoided opening the knife, yet. However this whole thing annoys me. I’ve seen people on Reddit being concerned about Leatherman’s QC and this makes me very suspicious about declining quality in their tools, an oversight, if this is what it is to them is unacceptable. There should be some kind of recall. Either change the cutout size, or change the knife design. It’s a shame because I REALLY like this tool, and it’s funny you said this is what you’d be giving as gifts because I had the same idea. I don’t think I’d give it out though, if I injure myself it’s one thing but to have a hand in potentially hurting someone else... no thanks. I’m extremely worried this is a sign of things to come from Leatherman where flippant attitudes from customer service, or just a lack of knowledge. Combined with poor design/engineering with the new products lead to a big downward trend with them.
Great example of how the blade tension can be an issue. Hopefully videos like this, Ben’s, and MaxlevelEDC’s will get Leatherman to fix this design before too many people get badly injured.
Do you have to order the clip off leatherman?
Yup. And it’s a bit overpriced in my opinion considering companies like Benchmade send out clips for free.
Years ago leatherman came out with a multi tool called the kick and it even came with a beautiful pouch!!!!! I’d like to do a video on it...... I have many multi tools interesting!!!!! Have you ever heard of the kick? Thanks
I used to have a Kick, it worked better than this...it had no locks and a knife blade and screwdrivers, was pretty light and you used to be able to buy a clip for it. So when new it worked well had no cutout and maybe side friction aided in this not happening? I gave it as a gift, sort of wish I kept it...
The fact that you nearly cut yourself within 3 days doing something normal with the tool tells me to wait for a re-design. And I was planning to order this tool immediately as I love its simplicity and size while still having useful tools, and would go great with a Swiss Army Knife like the Huntsman or Compact. Maybe it'll only cut you once out of a thousand times using the tool, but the cut could be pretty nasty.
I really like the classic form factor of the Bond and would be all for a voluntary recall to correct this. The only tool I have that has a similar issue is the SOG Paratool but at least the blade is on the inside of the handle when the pliers is in use.
And you could try to tighten it too as SOG uses common fasteners...and at least there's no cutout...
Thanks for This
Tim Leatherman should personally fix this, and fire customer care and the testing team. As he always said "It has to be good, my name is on it"
Hello buddy have you got the bond?if so is the problem fixed now I'm using a very old Leatherman wave the very first wave ever some one give it to my friend many years ago and i didn't realize it had Tim Leatherman on the side of the handle with so many years Leatherman any way my wave is still going strong but I'm very interested in buying this but I'm worried about the blade 🤔 this is the perfect EDC for my needs for normal use I've got a big size tool for harder tasks my friend also has this tool but he's has PST on the handle older version of the same the blade is holding me back 🤔
