Today I’m going to make fun of stupid sh*t on TikTok! I’m calling this my Deinfluencing series, where I talk about why you SHOULDN’T buy these 17 viral TikTok products. Why? Because most of TikTok is pretty much the definition of unsustainable shopping and these products are a case in point. So here are some of the most pointless wasteful products that shouldn't exist on tiktok and they are bei...
Do These Sustainable Habits Make Me Crazy? My Family Thinks So!
มุมมอง 1.3K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
Today, in the spirit of the upcoming holidays, I’m spilling the tea on my sustainable habits that my family thinks are totally nuts. I grew up in a family where we ate white bread and the cheapest groceries available because we, well, had to. Fast Forward to today, and I'm borderline obsessive about most things sustainable. So, let's all take a dig at me while I spotlight a bunch of reasons why...
What Is Going On At Etsy
มุมมอง 423K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
What happened to Etsy? Rising fees, random account suspensions, algorithm changes, continually ignoring the requests and concerns of its sellers and implementing policies that are punishing small businesses and makers and rewarding the type of unsustainable mass production business model that Etsy used to serve as an escape from. Whether you're a seller or a buyer-this is one video you won’t wa...

Can You Shop Ethically On Black Friday?
มุมมอง 645หลายเดือนก่อน
Black Friday is the Super Bowl of consumerism, with door-busting sales, crowds wrestling over TVs, and of course... a whole lot of waste. So, the big question: is it ethical to participate in Black Friday if you care about the planet? And if you partake in Black Friday sales can you do it sustainably? This can be a rather polarizing topic for those of us trying to live a more sustainable life a...
AI Is A Dystopian Nightmare-But Not For the Reason You Think
มุมมอง 2.8Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Is AI sustainable? As with most things that make our lives easy and convenient…not so much. The truth is that AI uses a TON of resources: metal to build the servers, electricity to run them, and water to cool them. Running Artificial Intelligence is far from being environmentally friendly. The numbers are ridiculous. But are these precious resources worth the output? Does AI optimize life to th...
Do Sustainable Products Actually Cost More?
มุมมอง 974หลายเดือนก่อน
Extremely low prices typically come at the cost of the planet and people. The average consumer has gotten used to prices that are only possible from cutting corners such as exploiting workers, ruining the environment, or using cheap materials and toxic ingredients. That said, is sustainable living expensive? It certainly can be a luxurious eco-pursuit of the elite with prices seemingly aloof an...

Reusing vs Hoarding: Where Do You Draw The Line?
มุมมอง 5222 หลายเดือนก่อน
Today, we're tackling a topic that might hit home for a lot of you: reusing versus hoarding. And where to draw the line between the two. We all want to be good stewards of the planet, but sometimes, our desire to keep everything ‘just in case’ can lead to clutter and stress and end up being less sustainable. One jar can turn into a collection of fifty, and before we know it, we’re overwhelmed b...
The Problem With Carbon Offsets
มุมมอง 2452 หลายเดือนก่อน
We’ve all been here: ready to hit “Confirm” as we book our flight or check-out from our favorite Amazon alternative. Then we notice a little blank box offering to offset our footprint. A couple of bucks to make up for our emissions (and eco-guilt) seems like a no-brainer, but is it really so simple? Are carbon offsets really our green card to excuse unsustainable behavior. Solving the Soft Plastics Pollution One EcoBrick at a Time
I almost bit on Temu, I needed a dish drying rack, Temu showed one... it said I spun and won 6 free gifts. I though... ok too good to be true but maybe I did, maybe thats how they hook new users to give them some free shit. After selecting all my free gifts, at the very end it said "With minimum purchase of $240" ... I was like "AH HAH there it is!" .. closed, letft and never looked back... thank God they didn't get my CC info or anything
ETSY is fucking garbage, I had a good traditional art store going and after a constant assault of anti seller policies I opened my own website, moved all my customers over and closed my store. If you want real hand made bespoke work shop private, if you want drop shipped Alibaba trash and A.I generated nonsense stay on Etsy
Leave etsy. People make vids about probs with a website but won't leave that site. I'm sure there are good etsy alts.
I have some things I want to sell but I haven't sold anything on Etsy in a while. They were listed and the listings expired without a single sale. :/ I'm thinking of just selling on eBay. It can't be any worse. I've sold a couple of things there.
I only recently purchased a vintage cigar ashtray for a vintage stand I had gotten from my grandparents. I did get what I was looking for and for a good price, but I deleted the app after the purchase because it did not seem like app I was always told it was.
Found exact same items on Temu, seller just added a logo. So disappointing.
I recommend everyone to make a screenshot of the product and do a image search online. As a buyer, I hate it that the first five pages of search results on Etsy are from dropshippers and Chinese resellers. For craftmaterial I avoid Etsy completely since the pandemic. Don’t need that toxic waste from Temu.
I think a big point was missed - Etsy forcing sellers to use tracking numbers or they won’t support you in any claims from the buyer - proof of shipping isn’t good enough tracking number or they will auto support the buyer even if the buyer is not being truthful. Shipping in Canada is idiotic expensive. I used to be able to send most of my items with bubble mailers and I would offer the free ship over $35. It would only cost $2-4 ish as letter mail (it would fit through a normal mail slot) Now having to have tracking numbers that’s at minimum $12-15 on top of the addition weight fee, must be sent as a package, etc. this eats almost all profit unless I increase costs by that much, which then puts the items into an unaffordable category for my target market. I closed my shop b/c of the rising fees
What I don't understand is why the government isn't as worried about temu on people's phones as they are about tiktok. I don't want either.
Are there any good alternatives to Etsy, as a buyer? I loved Etsy for Christmas shopping because I could easily find a lot of unique items. But more and more, the items are not so unique, and they're overpriced and dropshipped.
I started selling on Etsy in 2006. I have watched with dismay as they followed in the footsteps of eBay and my sales declined accordingly. I put my shop on "hold" in 2018 after my husband passed. Every time I think about reopening it I read yet another horror story. The one that stopped me cold was when they all but demanded we turn over our sales processing to THEM and to either put shipping included on listings or face being put at the bottom of the pile. I do NOT work for Etsy. They, in actuality, are supposed to be working for US. The influx of mass made goods was bad enough. Lately I had actually started thinking about reopening AGAIN until I watched this. I give up.
Etsy stole my sale money. No matter how many times I contacted them, they did not respond, or gave me a stupid response that had nothing to do with the issues. Etsy has became a big SCAM.
Lavky is pretty much what Etsy was. There must be similar websites for other countries.
Sounds like we need a replacement Etsy that actually is what Etsy used to be…. @sustainable jungle, this is your shot!! Make the platform and tell us about it. Sold
This is so depressing, I’m a baker and was toying with selling goods like fondant pieces on there… 👎
Why don’t you start your own? There are small sites now. But Etsy was a small site too. Just don’t ever go public.
Never used Temu. Knew it was too good to be true the moment i saw the first ad. Knew it was worse when people I didnt even talk to outside of work would beg me to download the app using the link they sent. Sucks that this is thw world today honestly.
It's terrible. Wish there was an alternative.
I’ve closed my shop. The fees were rising, the silly advertising policy killed my profitability and drop-shippers ripping off my designs just made it pointless for me to continue. If I’m making a product, I should be making the most money from it.
I've become so disenchanted with Etsy. I used to buy off them but now if I see something i like on Etsy i will do a directed search OFF Etsy for the same creator.
I got pushed a Temu add at the end of this video 🤦🏼♀️
The fees and suppression of views for your items and demands from the platform sounds a lot like Ebay.
Dropshipping Aliexpress resellers PoD sellers All are trash that need to be banned unless you can prove you made it yourself.
Etsy has always sucked, for me. I couldn't get my shop name changed, could never get it searcheable. Most of my sales were personally driven - for custom orders or convenience of a client who found me through friendship or social media. I haven't listed on Etsy since 2019.
Seriously taking from SHIPPING COST!!!! WTF!????are they shipping the products, then????
Duhhh, Jewish Josh Silverman enters the picture. I wonder how that is going to go?!
MBAs and CEOs have destroyed everything that is good in this world.
YES I bought a few things and < YES! they're just junk. Never again
Overpopulation, AI abuse, greedy under-sexed millionaire tech monsters are the actual damper on the market place, because they promote false values and pseudosciences from behind a cellophane image.
local? awesome. raw milk??? please explain bc that's how you end up in the hospital
I would be interested in your views when it comes to being going vegan in order reduce your eviromental impact? It is a well known and researched aspect of being vegan and while I would encourage people to do it for the animals, it really makes a HUGE impact on the eviroment to go vegan.
so many scammers fake items and a massive chinese presence .... its going to ship
its all Chinese rubbish and liars running scams. way too many sellers use fake photos of items which arent accurate or even real...
The bowling alley near me started using corn starch based straws. Out of curiosity I gathered all the straws my family used and brought them home to compost. I left them in my composter for 2 years and they looked as new as the day I got them. I eventually pulled them out and threw them away in the regular trash. I've read these need to be composted in one of those industrial facilities. The closest one to me is about 40 miles away in a different state.
Temu is to blame not the customers
A single glance at Temu site and the app is enough to tell that it’s a typical Chinese garbage stuff
LoL "duyo-duyo" is the wrong way to pronounce that. It's closer to "dwo-dwo", but not entirely, because there's no actual equivalent.
Well anyone can find the answer why Temu delivery is so cheap online its no secret...they leverage the "de minimis" exception, which allows them to ship small packages directly from China to the US without paying customs duties on shipments under a certain value, which allows them to ship at a very low fee or at times ship stuff free. They dont go through a warehouse like Amazon and it's definitely not the same as when someone is mailing something from within the US overseas. That's why all Temu's stuff is delivered in bags and very poor product packaging but delivery handling damage is the risk you take when you're buying something cheap. It is easy with someone with means to tell people where they should shop. But knowing in this economy this holiday season, there are alot of people and families out there who are on a limited budget and i don't judge where they shop. This is not just including college kids. I have bought many things off Temu myself and I have been satisfied with 95% of my purchases. Though a lot of the things I did buy where nerdy stuff I would of never found anywhere else such as a phone holder in the shape of a midevil knight, a dragon themed fantasy mug with a sword for the handle, and a star trek key chain in the shape of the Starship enterprise. But no joke these were shockingly great quality full of detail, and surprisingly heavier than i expected. I also bought shirts, socks, a laundry hamper, a pan to cook eggs, many mugs off Temu spending no more that $30 per order and some of this stuff they sent to me within the same purchase. ( For instance I got the shirt, the mug, a phone charger, and a memorabilia figure, and a portable air pump to put air in my tires all for $27 after tax ) but i also shop at Amazon as well which might make me very unpopular on this comments. And it is not good with the human rights sweatshop accusations however every retailer from Walmart, to Amazon, to H&m, Nike, forever 21, and many other high named fashion brands have been accused of the same things. Temu is a Market place that gets thier products from many suppliers and sadly that mess can happen to any retailer. Noone would ever shop again because there is a reason to boycott everything. Completely American made is to expensive for most and if American companies have to lay off workers to automation and outsourcing there are calls to boycott them too. I myself have little complainy off Temu, Amazon and Walmart. Just bought the most expensive thing i ever gotten of temu computer 2 monitors with extenders for my laptop for $240 that will arrive today or tomorrow. Will see how that turns out might take back my words.
Products are just typically way too expensive. Ive only ordered from them 4x. 2(?) Were gifts, and 2 were things for myself.
Would a class action lawsuit work? What about a class action lawsuit by buyers? False advertising is STILL illegal. Bait and Switch sellers are STILL illegal.
I have noticed ads on my phone that look like it could be Etsy given the logo color but have found the items marketed are junk items that you wouldn't normally associate with Etsy. The items shown are what I would consider to be niche extreme products that only places like Temu would show. It is very misleading and really should be looked into. I had been thinking of working on my Etsy again as I have been away from my store for over a year at this point. This video has come along in my feed this morning whilst working on my to do list. I think I might just skip Etsy altogether. Thank you for sharing this info.
11:02 Can't improve customer experiences by running them off. 🤦♀️ Corporate America. 🤬
If people want to secure the American economy, the last thing you should do is buy from big box stores and conglomerates like temu and Amazon Prime. I wouldn't be caught dead buying from those stores under any circumstances. There's always an option yet people love useless consumer products qnf treat their food the same way.
This was an excellent video. I have never bought on Etsy. I always felt they kept the sellers as hostages. And it has gotten worst as you reported. This business of greed is a disgrace. Yes, I know I probably missed many a good product, but what was a good thing has turned out to be bad. I believe it will get worst. I think that the individual small businesses need to find another avenue to do business. Buying direct from the seller is going to be the best way to go. I’m going to be optimistic about this issue and hope an idea will come forward to help the small businesses. Carol from California
Etsy sells things I'm seeing on Temu at a ridiculous markup so there's no point in even looking at Etsy.
I use etsy regularly, but try to go directly to the seller's site if they have it, I filter my search by state to shop local and review the seller's page before shopping. Am I perfect? No, I'm sure I've been mislead. I just want my home to be filled with eclectic handmade items that don't feel like they are machined to give a cozy vibe. Items are more durable, they have a character, the option for collaboration with the creator is there, I've collected many vintage and antique goodies over the years. But you have to sift through so much garbage to find something truly unique. When you do, the best part of receiving the item is the handwritten note, I tape them into my journal to remember their shop for future purchases 😊
Hauls started on TH-cam way before Tiktok was even a thing.
I ditched Amazon due to Bezos’ shenanigans. I have not found much interesting on Etsy lately, either. As for Temu/Shein, yuck. Nothing but cheap junk. I bought one item from Shein - never again.
I stopped even looking at Etsy when I started finding mass produced items still in the original packaging! If I want that I look for that. It’s all either 3d printed crap Chineesium knockoffs or marked up mass produced items you can find anywhere. F Etsy!!!
Every single handmade craft store I've ever seen eventually can only sustain itself with low price Chinese filler products.
