22:00 Far as Vvardenfell goes, my remembrance is muddy but I believe that it was just a few decades before the game started that Vvardenfell was opened to foreigners. Prior to that, as part of the treaty which inducted Morrowind into the Empire, Vvardenfell was off limits to the Empire, and foreigners couldn't settle there at all. It was only in 3E 414 that foreign settlement was allowed in Vvardenfell. It's somewhat ironic I think, that in game many of the Dunmer act as if they are part of an ancient culture, when the vast majority of the people in Vvardenfell came there at most, 13 years ago. Prior to 414, most of the population was Ashlanders, Vivec City, and a few settlements owned by the Great Houses (so probably at least Ald'Ruhn, Tel Aruhn, and a few others. Most of the villages are definitely more recent). Before Vvardenfell was opened, it was a 'Temple Preserve' which I imagine means most of the island was sacred ground, and couldn't really be tampered with.

Iirc, Toby Septim himself conquered Resdayn in the end of the First Age when the Tribunal still presented themselves amongst the Dunmer people, before they started holing up in their temples to reserve their strength for Ghostgate.

interesting video. camera shake and delay at least add some timing and weight to the already very simple vanilla combat, along with balancing heavy two handed weapons and making light weapons more attractive. auto-attack and removing shaking are great for accessibility tho. i've been trying to help my mum play skyrim (at her request, having witnessed me play countless hours as a tween) and the nauseating camera is an issue. also changing the fov also looks miles better! i think the alphabetical voice-line recording was for oblivion and not skyrim. although maybe they both did it lol. the average voice acting performance in both games is not great. but skyrim dialogue is just. so. boring. the excellent follower mods inigo for skyrim and vilja in oblivion are great to have a bit more fun writing and personality along with you. i play both with a lot of survival, economy and immersion mods too which weirdly has become a core part of the games for me. morrowind on the other hand, is already perfect :^)

The best part about this game is how Bethesda encourages mods, which means lots of the minor problems can be fixed. I tend to play mage and always found the vanilla magic uncreative. Theres some sick magic mods that add offensive spells outside of just destruction, which has been my biggest complaint for years

This dude is such a Morrowind fan. But I get it. I loved fallout 3 and new vegas, played thousands of hours before Fo4 came out, when it did, I hated it, absolutely hate it with all my guts. Last year, 10 years after release I finally played fo4 and its not that bad, its fun, its not New Vegas 2 or FAllout 3 upgraded, but its a fun game. I guess this is how you feel too.

I was a Skyrim kid/guy until i played Fallout 3 for the first time in 2020 and realised that even the totally optional melee combat of that game is way more fun and ahead when compared to the combat of their MELEE-ONLY title that came years after it... i could go on forever but well, you got the point already...

i just decided to stop modding the game and play vanilla on my steam deck. so far 43 hours into the game. survival and legendary difficulty, lidia doing all the killing XD

My problem with skyrim and my inability to ever play it is because the actual gameplay has zero depth. The gameplay itself is more or less combat and the combat is so absurdly simplistic. No matter how interesting the game world might be or how full it may or may not be with lore etc, the gameplay is atrocious. It has nothing to it, even when it was released it was as if people had brainstormed for weeks to figure out what the most shallow form of gameplay imaginable would be, and then went for it. Ive tried playing skyrim many times over the years, I've never lasted for more than a handful of hours, furthest I got was on release where I probably played through maybe half of the main story at least before losing the ability to force myself to keep going. Its so absurdly shallow as a _game_, and the story does not make up for that. If it had coop, i think i would have made it through, because then my friend would make up for what the game is lacking, in the sense i enjoy hanging out with my buddies. but skyrim as a game is, to me, one of the most overhyped media products in history.

Paying for these unhinged rants every month is vital to my continued survival. May need to bump up to Favorite Friend, even. For me, coming to Skyrim from Morrowind, especially with the addition of Tamriel Rebuilt, was immensely disappointing. I may be more active in the areas of the internet where people criticize Skyrim (ad nauseam, sometimes), but even so, I hardly ever see complaints about dialogue and voice acting. Almost always, the complaints are systems-based, ie. no spellmaking, levitation, more limited enchanting and alchemy, etc; or the story as you mentioned. (Save the Civil War quest, which I think is fairly good, although certainly misses the mark in several spots) Either way, it was surprising to me too that the voice acting, barks, and dialogue overall was such a rare criticism, despite all the very antagonistic "Skyrim isn't even an RPG" type comments and posts people make. That was the worst part for me, even in my first playthrough, when everything was new, I still found the dialogue boring and poorly delivered/directed. Especially the barks, which are probably one of the best parts of Morrowind. In Skyrim, it was cool at first when I started to hear quest related ones, ala rumors. The Dawnguard one especially is neat, because it feels like you're overhearing a conversation, not having some idiot shout at you across the square about a potion shop or the best swords in Whiterun. However, it sucks after maybe the third time you hear a guard tell you about how they're reforming the Dawnguard, out in the old fort near Riften. I thought that was much worse than the curved swords, mostly because you hear it constantly, everywhere, and the attached DLC is ehhhhhh. (Serana sucks, I don't get why people like her) Anyway, agree on all the ramblings and points in the video. I never could pin down why I despised the melee combat so much until you went into the mouse delay. Now I know what to mod out whenever I decide to try Skyrim again.

What an excellent take by an Imperial’s experience in the foreign lands of Skyrim. Heimsker is annoying but if you listen to the strained tone in his lines he might be the only person who was conveying emotion pretty decently. The great actor who did Esbern…. That was so hard to listen to, he sounded like he was drooling the whole time. I can hear the tongue slithering away in that old man’s mouth. Looking forward to more from you.
