    In the HPAT-Ireland exam, the raw score, which reflects the number of correct answers, does not seem to be important. So, what is important? Is it who your father is or how much money you have? What truly matters in this exam?

  • @zc-nagy7385
    @zc-nagy7385 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I am writing to express my concerns regarding the HPAT medical entrance exam. It appears that the exam administration lacks transparency, with no established appeal system and unclear calculation methods. Although HPAT-Ireland is managed by an organization based in Australia, I have evidence indicating that my son's results were generated only a few hours before the final results were issued from Ireland. This raises significant concerns about the integrity of the process. It is disheartening to see that such an important examination may be compromised. Please feel free to contact me for more detailed information.

    hi oral i’m just wondering about the points moderation, is it an added 5 for every point above 550? so let’s say it was 560 id that an extra 50 points or is it an extra 10?

    • @orlacoffey814
      @orlacoffey814 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Sorry for taking a while to reply. 560 is 10 points over the threshold so you divide 10 by 5 to get 2 - so 560 would work out as just 552. They do it to give less weight to high leaving cert points and more weight to the HPAT, so I think you were misunderstanding the calculation part. For example 600 points is 50 over 550, so 50 divided by 5 is 10 so that would give 560 as a score. Hope that makes sense!

    HPAT aptitude is completely irrelevant in whether or not people succeed at medical school imo. The Irish entry system for medicine and dentistry is very broken and has desperately needed an overhaul for years now. Better and higher quality medical education exists in the UK with much fairer admissions standards if you do not do well in the HPAT

    • @orlacoffey814
      @orlacoffey814 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      At least medicine isn’t 625 with random selection like dentistry, it’s better to have the Hpat than leaving it purely up to points in my opinion.

    • @JamesLee-tj3cg
      @JamesLee-tj3cg 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@orlacoffey814 True, but an interview stage would be better I think, as Medentry holds pretty much a monopoly on Hpat prep, making the system far more classist than it could be. Section 2 of the HPAT is a poor substitute in assessing the empathy skills of a person than an interview would be. I know quite a few people who couldn't afford medentry, and didn't get a good hpat score, myself included the first time I did it. The way I see it, provided you have the points, you can just buy your way through the Hpat, making it more skewed towards the wealthy in the end than a lottery system. Neither CAO system for medicine and dentistry is fair

    Do you know if let’s say for example 2 years ago there was a poor overall group doing the hpat and then last year the overall group was better, would the points from the hpat be the same for both? Like obviously the percentiles would be the same (there’d still be a 100th, 85th, 46th percentile etc), but could the points for medicine be lowered from the fact that the hpat was taken poorly that year if you know what I mean

    • @orlacoffey814
      @orlacoffey814 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Valid question. Firstly I think it’s unlikely an entire group would be poor. Assuming there was, it would still be marked in proportion so that the best students get the highest points. What the highest points overall for a year is does fluctuate a good bit but the bell graph of showing the number of people with each score looks pretty similar each year despite differences in the cohort. You can find these graphs on Acer website if you want to see what I mean. Points for medicine will always reflect how your whole cohort does so it is always really the percentile that gives the better indication of how you did.

    Hi Orla, how do I score a acer practice test ? for instance on the Test 1 I got the following percentages: 61%, 90%, 50%. by the 40/40/20 rule, i get 211. But i guess i need to take this with a pinch of salt.. can you please guide me here? Thanks!

    • @orlacoffey814
      @orlacoffey814 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, be cautious that Acer ones are easier than the real thing. Also, your score for each section isn’t a percentage of the amount you got right, it’s a score which is itself weighted based on which questions you get right rather than just how many and how many everyone else gets right too. So I wouldn’t even try to work out an overall score from Acer exams because you can’t apply the same method :)
