    Thank you for this helpful and informative video. I recently adopted an 18 month old border collie almost 2 months ago now and I came across your channel which I’ve been finding really helpful. I will admit I’ve made all of the mistakes you mention throughout my lifetime - having always been a dog lover, I’ve always assumed dogs are happy to be petted, and that owners wouldn’t mind me petting them, but clearly that’s not the case. Since having Rupert I totally get the other side of things now. He can be quite reactive on the lead and whilst he generally loves people, he can get easily excited/stimulated and will jump up at anybody who gives him attention (or ignore them if something else is more interesting). We are obviously working on training him out of the jumping but it can be hard when other people provide stimuli you weren’t expecting or feel like you can’t control! And if Rupert doesn’t like something about someone, he’ll let me know by barking, at which point I need to then look like I’m telling him off so that the stranger doesn’t think I’m irresponsible. So far only one lady has asked me for permission to pet him (which I was pleasantly surprised by) and I said yes because he was sitting quietly and calmly, and moved towards her to sniff when she approached. Based on your guidelines from the approaching person’s POV, I would now love to know the signs to look for that my dog isn’t comfortable being petted by someone, which would really help me as a new dog owner.

      Before teaching anything too difficult, I would definitely focus on attention games, like teaching attention and the touch game both of which I have videos on my channel! Obviously heel is also important, but it's much easier if your dog has that groundwork already set for focusing on you, because then you don't have to constantly deal with the dog who is always distracted! Shelter dogs are definitely difficult, my first dog was a rescue who was in a shelter for 3 years, and they do get some baggage with that, but if you are diligent with your boundaries, and make training fun they will want to work with you! Best of luck! If you have any more questions, or need any videos for how to train something, feel free to leave them in the comments and I will do my best to help!

    How do u train two dogs at same time

    • @DanaAndDogs
      @DanaAndDogs 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When training it is best to teach foundations separately and set boundaries separate as well, once the dogs both are in a place where you are happy, you can start introducing training sessions in which both are involved! Just remember that you can have different boundaries for each dog, and each dog can be in a different place training wise and as long as you maintain your boundaries you have set with each of the dogs, they wont negatively impact each other!

    • @DanaAndDogs
      @DanaAndDogs 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It has been really nice, obviously with a border collie this collar is heavier, which is something I should have anticipated but didn't, but it is extremely durable. However for sports I avoid using it because of how heavy it is, but it's my favorite for photos!

    Also, i'd just like to add that its not ok for people to let their dog run up to someone else's dog either. My dog is very dog friendly, ( lucky for the other dog and owner) but what if she WASN'T?!!! Not all dogs are dog friendly!! Dana, lol i love you and how you say things... "you are not entitled to say hi to it!" 😂😂 So true!!!!!

    • @DanaAndDogs
      @DanaAndDogs 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I completely agree! If a dog feels like they are trapped they should have every right to enforce their personal space, and mose bites happen when a dog feels that is the only way to enforce it! When a dog approaches a crated dog, or a leashed dog, it is not aggression when that dog defends itself, or enforces its space. But that dog always ends up being labeled as the aggressor, which is sad. Also, i am so glad you enjoy my videos! It's always nice to hear that people enjoy hearing what i have to say 😊

  • @OffGridDogs
    @OffGridDogs 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Well you almost got there. How about what’s good for dogs? Strangers are not making your dog “happy” by invading their space. That wiggle/tail wag is stimulation/stress not happiness. That’s why I (and anyone who understands dogs) would never ask to pet or say hi to a dog that doesn’t know me. “No touch, no talk, no eye contact” is how you meet a dog. Then if he comes into your space and sniffs you pet him all you want! You’ve got most of this right. But isn’t ridiculous that in a country that spends $billions$ on dogs, people don’t even know how to (not) meet them and we keep killing millions of dogs while tens of millions live stressed out frustrated and unhealthy lives all because the “Pet Industrial Complex” sells the lie of convenience and ignorant people get dogs.

    • @DanaAndDogs
      @DanaAndDogs 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes I completely agree! This video like I said was really based off of the speech I gave to third graders lol, so the no touch no talk no eye contact saying is something I felt like they wouldn't understand, however I do have more parts to what I did give as a speech to kids, and one part I plan on recording in the future is how to understand when a dog wants its space respected. I split the speech into parts, just because I felt like it would be too long of a video lol, but I did miss some stuff. My main goal is to empathize with the " pet people" because I do understand that in the way they work is they see a cute happy dog and want to say hi to it, because in their world that means the dog also wants to say hi to them. Not everyone is a dog trainer, and that is okay or else I'd be out of a job lol, so this video is also kind of finding that middle ground, but in reality yes I would prefer if no one would want to pet my dog when I'm in public 😂

    • @OffGridDogs
      @OffGridDogs 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DanaAndDogsO that makes sense, I didn’t realize it was targeted toward children but it was also very good for adults (not much difference lol). I take my 140 pound fluffy white well mannered Great Pyrenees out in public every day so you can imagine what I experience. You do a better job than me at being diplomatic but I am much older than you and I’ve been watching this disaster for decades. The way I look at it if 95% of the people don’t know how to meet a dog and we’re killing millions of dogs and many tens of millions live stressed, frustrated miserable lives (I’m a dog trainer also) why doesn’t it ever get any better?

    • @DanaAndDogs
      @DanaAndDogs 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      At the end of the day i believe it's because of the media which is not knowledgeable in dogs, but are quick to get a story, and then obviously the irresponsible owners with dogs that shouldn't be loose that makes bad names for a breed (or in 'pitbulls' case, a generalization for an appearance of dogs). It's always difficult having a dog that doesn't fall into the "scary dog" category, like great pyrenees, when a person sees them they just see a cute fluffy dog, not a dog that was literally bred to be an independent guardian.

    • @DanaAndDogs
      @DanaAndDogs 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have so many stories of when i used to bring my border collies to public areas how people would literally run from one end of the store to try to pet my dogs, only for me to tell them no. It was almost comical getting those reactions from people who are older than me. Thankfully now with my jobs and being part of kennel clubs i no longer need to bring my dogs to oet friendly stores to expose them to different environments. Still at kennel clubs i have had a few negative interactions (one being where a lady went behind me while someone was asking me a question about training and started giving my bc puppy large hard treats. When i told her to stop and that my dog was sensitive to treats, she got upset with me lol. I ended up spending the night awake with a puking puppy, thankfully she's fine, but that was beyond upsetting.)

    • @OffGridDogs
      @OffGridDogs 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yep the ignorance comes with arrogance. I recently posted a TH-cam titled “please! Don’t talk to my dog” and it got 500 comments 80% idiotic of course and mostly telling me to leave my dog at home if I don’t like random strangers passing by trying to get my calm dog excited with the high pitched squeaky voice. Like that’s not thoughtless and rude(not to mention improper for the dog) and I’m the asshole.

      My favorite instance of this, is when I was training my rescue Gunner, In a pet friendly store with a do not pet vest on. A parent encouraged their child to pet my dog after seeing the do not pet vest on, and then I had to be the bad guy and say no my dog is not available to be pet lol

    I was curious of this and the first thing is a thing I have desperately tried to teach my dog: backing up. It just sits tightly to the ground whenever I try to get it to back up 😅 I guess it's clearly easier with some dogs than others to teach that 😂 Well, I'll still see the rest of the video if there will be something that helps me 😃

    • @DanaAndDogs
      @DanaAndDogs 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sometimes teaching stand first is easier! I have a video on my channel that gives some different methods on how to teach stand first, before trying to teach back up! Amo already knows back up, but starting off it was a very similar situation, it just takes some persistence and patience, dont give up!😊

    • @magicofshootingstar5825
      @magicofshootingstar5825 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @DanaAndDogs My dog halfly knows standing. If it's non-pressure situation it usually follows stand command but if it really wants something (like treat), it usually tries to please me by sitting or even laying down when I try to get it to stand 😅😂 I guess I need to keep practising that too.

      I completely agree and understand! I am in the process of saving up for a mic that will clip on to my clothes, all the background noise is unavoidable, due to it being at my kennel club (they have a refrigerator, vending machine, and a loud furnace) but in the future my audio will hopefully be higher quality! I am glad you can appreciate my training even though the production isn't the highest quality right now!

    Hi Dana, your video got randomly suggested to me and clicked out of pure curiosity but I was pleasantly surprised. Very good and clear video! Your instructions and examples were very clear and concise and the explanation of why you're teaching it this or that way was helpful to understand the logic. That bit with the fast-forward was really useful to see the slow progress clearly! If I may give you some unrequested advise, back when I was trying to teach my dogs I always struggled with knowing what to teach when. It might be useful for you to number your videos and to point new viewers to your other viewers, e.g. "this video is number X of my teaching videos and it's a medium/advanced command.
