Mountainside Homestead with Ken and Amy
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 19 พ.ค. 2021
Just a couple in their 50’s who had it with the corporate world and city living. We moved to the mountains of North Carolina to work together doing our own thing. We moved to run an existing small mom and pop vacation cabin rental business. It is on site and offers an unplugged vacation experience like no other.
We built our first chicken coop in 2019 with zero intentions of living a farm life but here we are!
Now there is hardly a day that passes where one of us doesn’t ask “When Was the Last Time?" We are learning everyday what in takes to homestead on the top of our mountain with almost no flat land and very little pasture to speak of.

That was scary! Glad you are ok Amy. Great job getting the truck out of the ditch. Praying your next trip is safe and uneventful. Right before the truck went into the ditch, there was a small animal that scurried down the hill and across the road. Any idea what that was? Val C ❤️🙏🏻
We plan to work on the road later today when it warms up some. I still need to get to town to deliver the eggs, get feed and a few groceries :) I think the animal was a bug on the window right by the camera - lol!
@@mountainsidewithkenandamyOh! That’s hilarious! 😂
wow, you two sure know how to deal with the challenges. i was able to exhale when i saw that truck come out of the ditch. yay! and it was nice to see that kitty cat hanging with you. brrr. ya'all take care
lol! thx - we just work with what we have and try n make the best of the situation and laugh through it. I was glad to have it out of the ditch too! It is parked down the road til the road thaws some more. Some parts of it are dry, others wet, and others snow covered and slick. The challenge is the steep incline and the pitch of the road towards the ditch. Kitty was watching and making sure we were doing it correctly - LOL!
@@mountainsidewithkenandamy lol meow, good kitty
Thank you for sharing - it's helpful and interesting for me to see the reality of your every-day driving in snow. Peace and blessing to you and your family.
Its not always easy in the winter around here thats for sure! The plan was for me to get to town and get feed and groceries and drop off eggs but that will have to wait for a few days now. The main roads are good, its the side and private mountain roads that are sketchy.
I eat a half a dozen cloves a day.
@@raymonddauteuil54 good stuff! I’ve had 4 one morning when I was not feeling great. Felt much better later on :)

You're making a batch of what?
Jun - it’s kombuchas cousin. :) Jun is made with green tea and honey while kombucha is made with black tea and sugar.
I eat one clove of fermented in honey garlic every morning. It not only helps your immune system it is delicious.
I do too! I needed to start this batch a while ago, my older batch is almost gone so when I start with this one I'm sure the garlic will not be as mellow 😂

A question…just because I have no clue and even though I’m 59 I have never been that close to a chicken that didn’t come from the grocery store. I’m wondering if your hen that was not the Cornish cross if that hen would have been typical of what chicken was back in say my grandparents era? Because I know I’ve had some chicken breasts that are almost as big as a small turkey’s breast and I just wonder if that’s not the best meat to be eating. Of course it’s from the grocery store and who knows what kind of chicken it was or how it was raised. Only because I live in downtown Toronto and can’t get anything better. I love the idea of moving to North Carolina and staying in one of your long term rentals and helping on your farm. My husband and I would never be able to buy a homestead of our own but we are hard workers and I do a lot of pressure canning and I have grown my own food with hydroponics. I have a Facebook page called armchairgardener (realized what an oxymoron title that was after starting it) but I had tons of luck growing food year round in nutrient rich water. My husband and I built a DIY continuous flow system, and it allowed me to grow more then 98 plants at one time and I did a lot of herbs and various kinds of lettuce. In totes I grew sweet pepper trees that were over eight feet tall and four feet wide. The peppers were unbelievable I was hand pollinating them and I also grew an enormous tomato plant that produced all kinds of tomatoes. I would love to come for a visit and to see what your farm is about and see if we would be a good fit. But again it would be something that we would have to see what’s possible. Cause I’m not getting any younger and my husband is a few years younger than me.
Happy New Year! The wood stove is a challenge for sure. Ma Ingalls made it look so easy lol! Enjoyed seeing the footage of your farm and countryside. Val C
@@stephencameron1709 Hey Val! The wood stove sure is! And we have learned the term a few years back when we got the stove - “if ya can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen”. That stove will make it so hot in there - lol!!

Hi, I came over from Fit Farmer and subscribed. May God bless all your efforts helping these folks. I’m 74 and lost my mobile home I lived in for 26 years. Due to Bidonomics I lost my insurance, but I didn’t lose my whole community. I can’t imagine what they are going through. I pray when the new administration gets in they will send help.❤🙏🙏
I am sorry to hear about your home! I am glad you still have your community. I am glad you are here and found us :) We pray that we can be a light to this community in the coming year. We will keep everyone posted week by week!
Sending love and prayers from Ocala, FL.
If you just wanna have no music and just nature sounds is good with probably a lot of folks. I'm loving your talking videos showing what you're up to.
Hey! Just discovered y'all after watching someone's video. You're my kinda folks, being tv free 11 years, so glad you removed them from your rentals. What you're doing is like a dream to me. What gorgeous views, and your dog so loves you, cannot leave you, so sweeeeet.
Thank you for your kind words! Glad you found us :)
that egg nog looks so easy to make. I watched a video long ago with 4 couples talking about the flood and that's how I found you guys.
@@realGrandmaBrowne it is easy to make - just keep stirring and don’t walk away from the pot and let the milk scald :) glad you found us!
what a delightful video. thank you darling folks for being real
@@donnarae441 thank you! :)
Beautiful view you have there!
Thank you :)
What a blessing that you were able to pull up most of the buried wire by hand. I like how you don't rush around. My husband installs wells and pump systems and occasionally has to find a break in the wire. He recommends putting shallow bury electrical wire in conduit to protect it from breakage whether it be from putting a fence post thru it (done that) or driving over it. Unfortunately it is costly, which is probably why the previous owner didn't do it. I really like your background music, it is very soothing.
Thank you. The mountain teaches us to slow down and not rush. I might dig a deeper trench to put it back in but still undecided what route to take. We think that soundtrack fits the mountain (:
What amazing donations! You are a great blessing to your community. Praying your garden and greenhouse flourish. Your animal compost should be a great addition. ❤️🙏 Val C

My family including my son, goes back many generations, serving the military and the great people of this country.
Long line of military in this family - most recent is Kens son was in the Marines. Thank you for thinking of us and just know that even tho the media has moved on, the reality here is it will take years to recover. Thank you for your service as well!
My question is what are they spraying???!!! So much we don't know and aren't told by our government!
thats the thing - we really don't know - but it cant be good for us, the land or animals.
Strontium, aluminum, barium, lithium, for starters...
The wind moved your camera. Lol. I just discovered you guys through watching The Fit Farmer. Now I'm binge watching your videos. It was quite interesting to watch your content before and after the flood. No one could have prepared for Helene. I appreciate your humble acceptance of being spared and applaud your service to your community. You both have such a quiet and peaceful demeanor about you. I believe I will try to make some Jun.

@mountainsidewithkenandamy That's what I thought when you showed the name of the plastic. 🤣
I came over from The Fit Farmer after watching his video when they were visiting with you guys. I clicked on this video after reading your description/bio to see what you guys were about even though I planned on subscribing to your channel. I love learning about other's and how they got started on their land/with their journey. I enjoy finding like minded couple's channels. We see that craziness in our Texas sky too. It's frustrating to see that going on in our sky. It does need to stop. It should not have ever started. My husband and I have purchased raw land that we plan to move to/live on to get out of the city.
Some days its blue sky then other days its a literal checkerboard :/
They have been seeding the skies since the 60's!

Thank you :) Hope all is well with you!
Sure wish I could purchase fresh eggs from you!
😂Been there!
Thanks for the update, yall. Regular pruning of my sweet potato vines and feeding that to the chooks or putting the greens in salads or soups, is a good source of food for us and it promotes larger sweet potatoes at harvest. Poor ground has been good ground for them to grow, as well, so I put slips out all over the place.
@@kenhhuster Good to know. Thanks for the input.
Yes many people especially asian culture eat the sweet potatoe greens as well or feed to animals. The problem with gift cards is how far you have to go to find a place to use them. The places you mentioned open in town i dk how anyone out of state could arrange to pay for. But sounds like a small van delivery once a week or once a month full of eggs butter and milk might be useful. Anything else? Specific needs delivered by specific people. From a bigger hub maybe to the church and then disbursed from there.? Jobs and cash?
@@Tinysteading The need right now is volunteering to help rebuild on the weekends in the town of Hot Springs and Marshall (there are sign ups available online), and yes, funds to help rebuild and keep bills paid. Most everyone is out of work right now but the bills do not stop...
