Dollar Tree Vinyl -Are the Savings Worth the Struggle?
Watch what happens when I attempt to make a huge Valentine's Day card using supplies from the Dollar Tree! This whole project cost $6.10, but I'm still trying to decide if the savings were worth the extra work.

The Heat Foil tool from Silhouette can be used on so many materials! In this video, I show you how to add a little sparkle to your stickers with it! I have used the heat foil on cardstock, wood, acrylic, and faux leather in the past, but I decided to experiment with sticker paper today, and it is AMAZING! Thank you for the excellent explanation. I have a question: Can the Cameo 5 Machine diy (Clear Silicone Rubber) ? And which name is the blade designated for it, if possible?
this was fantastic! I"ll watch it many times but very well done. thank you.
Hi thnx for walkthrough and im new in Silhouttee Cameo 5 downloaded V5, do I need to register before I get access to Design or Library?? Please assist
You'll need an account to sign in to.
Will this also work with HTV?
Am down loading the new version of the cameo silhouette five programming
Love your videos they are so helpful ❤
Hi, I am about to play with some leather and foil too, but I'm not buying the heat pens just yet. For now I am designing an adapter for some generic foil quill to fit my older Cameo 4 just to try things out first, and only if the project is a success I will buy heat pens for my Cameo 5... Anyway, to ensure longevity of your project, think about rounding the corners of that patch (because corners are usually the weakest points), and if you were to stitch that patch to the beanie, it could be good idea to score a groove with the heat pen without the foil just to mark the stitching lines and sink the stitches in to protect the thread 😉
Just thought I would let you know I have made the perfect mat for etching on using two old silhouette mat and eliminating the need for taping the material down each time. Happy to send you a video and or a photo if you would like to see.
Thank you! I learned so many tips from this, including things I knew how to do in other software but hadn't discovered in Studio. I will feel so much more comfortable transforming images now. As for putting all the little scraps onto the mat to cut once, its such an obvious, common sense thing when pointed out, but I know I would have been laboriously cutting each color on separate passes, had you not shown us how to do it in one pass! I am curious to know how well the layered vinyl holds up over time or does it start to delaminate after a while? Layering is something I've been very tentative about doing, but this tutorial gives me so much more confidence in doing it well.
How does it miceowave? I picked up a holiday cup from goodwill put it in with water for a minute and burned the crap out of my hand.
I'm not sure, to be honest. I always decorate mine, and vinyl isn't supposed to go in the microwave.
OMG! You just saved me hours of searching. Literally in less than a minute! thank you!😊
thank you for sharing with us newbies..quick question...where do we buy a new grip sheet? I'd like to have extra ones available if needed..
You can get them directly from the Silhouette website, Amazon, or local craft stores. Check and compare costs before you buy, though!
Brenda, you are a wealth of information on Silhouette❣️I recently found you, and now I’m hooked! I’ve watched other people do tutorials, and there truly is not any comparison to the level of detail in what you teach! Others may offer ‘in depth’ tutorials, but then charge for them. Since I’m retired, I really have to be careful with any expenditures. I am totally a fan!! Thank you, thank you, thank you❣️❣️ Question…is there any possibility you could do a live presentation?
I have been trying to work up the Visage to go live. 🤣 I know that probably sounds silly, but if I'm recording, I have the chance to cut out my mistakes. Lol. I'm getting there.
Hi, Is the template still available? I got a blank page when I tried the link provided,
Hi does design on Silhouette Studio work or one need to download from Google im new on cameo 5
I find the cross hairs very distraction also, but when you need to perfectly line something up, they are awesome. 😊
I use Dollar tree vinyl for stencils. Not really any other significant projects because us it's not been adequate for any of those but I also after the five with the backing taking it off my mats. I probably will try this project today when I get home, but I'll probably end up using make market or something that I'm sure I already have at home. Thank you for the idea, I'll try to post a picture of mine after I finish
I like the DT glitter htv better then others ive tried Their adhesive vinyl on the other hand...ill use it for bigger cutes but nothing small. It does hold up well once applied
I've seen people use the chopping nuts from the Dollar tree for the rhinestone templates the store then.
Apparently Creative Fabrica has sued some of their subscribers for using their designs: th-cam.com/video/yGoa9Cin1kU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ujCn5SPfW6j2pVZ2
It looks like Creative Fabrica was not the one suing subscribers, but rather, they have hosted some stolen designs and the original creator of said designs went after the subscriber instead of the person that stole said design. I do have a contact. I'll reach out in just a bit. This is a very concerning video.
I just found out by accident the 5.0 today. It's VERY polished UI wise, but performance is kinda meh. I'm on a M2 Max with 96GB of RAM Mackbook pro...
I haven't experienced any performance issues myself, but I've heard others say there are bugs. I'm on a Windows gaming PC. Is it just running slower for you? Or are there bugs that you have experienced?
I used DT vinyl and their transfer tape. I used it to: Etch on glass cutting boards and glasses. Etch on painted metal Tumbler To make sticker sentiments for cards. Also used it to make sticky stencils. Yes, it requires lots of patience. The transfer tape doesn't can be use a few times before is not good anymore.
I haven't tried the transfer tape. Does it come up off of the backing when you use it?
I thought what you said about this vinyl was hard to work with and hard to get off the backing. Try using clear packing tape as transfer tape. It works really good.
I would be interested/thanks
Replay-thanks
Wow there’s alot more than I thought to warp. Pretty cool.
Replay-thanks
Thanks!
Thank you so much! 🥰
You’re so welcome!
T00 complicated 😮
Not worth it,😢
I use DT glitter vinyl on the top of heavy card stock to create rhinestone templates. The stone transfer tape will not stick to the glitter vinyl. This saved $$$. compared rhinestone flock. Plus it’s easy to store for future use using a DT wire divider.
Wow this is a good idea!
This is AMAZING!! I must try this now!
I've never used it. I figured that you get what you pay for 😂. But if I was making something disposable or temporary then I would consider it.
I have used it for car decals and they have lasted years & withstood the Texas weather... the only thing is that It really doesn't do well with small intricate designs.
Really? That is amazing! Do you have the same issue with it coming up from the backing?
Yes... I usually trim the vinyl into 12 inch pieces, lay the bumps as flat as possible & let it sit with wieght on top of vinyl for a few days & it usually take care of that problem @silhouettesuccess
I bought various colors for similar uses with similar results. Most colors were usable but the white was terrible and unusable.
Same! I made decals for a basketball backboard using dt vinyl and it has lasted through rain/snow/heat/cold
So cute! Why do you use the Cricut hot press? I thought the gnomes were print and cut images to be glued on. I love the technique though. 👍🏼
I used HTV for the layers. I find it's easier than gluing cardstock. I don't know how I passed kindergarten without being able to glue. 🤣🤣
I dont like the new roller feeder being detached. Stupid to detach it. I use my daughter-in-law's silhouette and am going to get my own but this detached business may be the reason I don't buy the cameo 5. I have watched other videos and dont see any increased sturdiness or anything else.
I liked it being attached, as well, but it didn't click in place well enough. I also think the 4 is still my favorite machine. 😍
Can I use cameo 4?
The Silhouette heat foil pen only works with the newest machines, but you can grab a foil quill pen from We Are Memory Keepers and it will do the same thing!
Ever since the silhouette update has been going on our silhouette cameo fours have not been cutting properly. The alignment seems like it’s off. It’s cutting off to the left of where it needs to cut on our stickers. We have tried everything that we can to troubleshoot this situation, both of our cameo fours are doing this, and we cannot figure out for the life of us How to stop this from happening. It is cutting left of the sticker and all the alignment test that we have done and everything else we have done to troubleshoot the situation has not helped the situation! What else can we do? 2:52 2:55
What version of the software are you running?
@@silhouettesuccess i’m running the newest latest version of silhouette studio. My firmware is up-to-date as well and my stickers are still cutting off to the left. We’ve tried to do the alignment test. We also did the motor reset we uninstalled reinstalled silhouette and the stickers are very small. I believe they’re about half an inch and they’re cutting off a couple of centimeters or so my son said to the left of what they should be cutting off. I don’t know what else to do. My daughter is suggesting that we put a outline around it, but I’m not sure! We have ran every test underneath the sun and nothing is fixing our problem. I’ve even put in a new mat. We’ve looked at our auto blade. We have done everything that I could possibly do to troubleshoot my machine so that my daughter decided to send her cameo for up to us to see if that would fix it. Ours is doing the exact same thing so I know it’s not the cameo four because hers is working perfectly for her down in Arkansas. I don’t know if it’s my son‘s computer or what but I wouldn’t think it would be because my daughter‘s machine was fine. I don’t know if there’s something within cameo silhouette for that is new because we noticed there are some new words when you open the icons to see different things for cutting and things of that nature new text words instead of what it used to say it says something else things have moved around a lot on the screen and we’re just a bit confused. I probably need to post something on my channel about how far over these are cutting and maybe take a picture of it as well because we really can’t seem to figure this out and I had to shut down my Etsy shop because of this. Because I can’t sell stickers that are cutting off to the left side of the sticker. It looks really bad.
Wow that’s incredible 😮😊
Hi Brenda… this has nothing to do with heat foil, haven’t got there yet, but I have a question… with the new desktop layout, I don’t see the design store option in the design tab… can we no longer easily jump to the design store?
You have to click on the home button in the upper left hand corner, then you can get to the store. It is an extra step.
Mahalo!! 🌺
That was pretty cool
do you have any studio 5 videos? All i am seeing are 4.. whatever
I had been using V5. I just switched back because my Portrait didn't want to connect. Idk if it was a v5 issue or not, but I've switched back again.
@silhouettesuccess cool
Thank you so much for all of your tutorials.
Very informative. Do have a question… I just bought a used Silhouette Portrait 1 on marketplace. Is there any possibility of engraving using the pen holders I received and mounting something to engrave with? Are there any generic-made parts to buy for this?😊
I don't think that the Portrait has enough force to engrave. I know there are other brands that make engraving tools, but I have never tried them out. Silhouette frowns on that, and it can void the warranty. The Portrait 1 would no longer be covered, anyway, so you could give it a try.
Great video, thank you for sharing! I was just working on some applique pieces for a quilt and last night I cut a few on my Cricut, but then thought I'd like to try it out on my Cameo 4 Plus as well. Personally, since I quilt, I usually stitch down the outer edges of my appliques with a blanket stitch, but I LOVE the idea of using the Heat n Bond Ultra Hold (I use the Lite for quilts) and then covering the raw edges with HTV--BRILLIANT! Thanks again for the video. I'd love to see the rotary blade tutorial as well. You may have produced it already so I'll poke around. Cheers!
I wish I had the talent and patience to sew! I'm terrible at it. 🤣 I haven't done the rotary blade yet, but it is on the list. I've fallen a bit behind schedule. It's been a rough start to the year around here.
@@silhouettesuccess I'm sorry to hear it's been a bit rough. Sending you all the best and positive vibes for a great February.
Can I make custome decals without a file. I just got my machine and I want to make custom decals. Do I need separate software for that?
You can definitely design your own files in Silhouette Studio by combining lines, shapes, and text.
@silhouettesuccess do you have a video on this ?
I use CorelDraw for any custom logo work. I think any software that lets you create vector art and save it in a format that your software will read would be fine. PNG seems to be one of the safest bets.
I love your videos. Can you check your sound? I have to boost my sound to max to hear you, then when I watch another channel I have to put my sound back to normal (middle).
Thank you for sharing! Im getting a Portrait 4 by next week so I'm going to give this a go :)
No need for a laser printer to be able to foil? Very nice, want to experiment on some of my stickers 😊
It is so nice to see that I am not the only one who runs into these same problems! Your tips on dropping the lid down or how even shutting off overhead lighting can make a difference on how the registration marks are being read is invaluable. It is refreshing to see an expert show the problems that might occur, diagnose the problem and then finish with an outstanding result in a manner that is easy to understand and relate to. Thank you!
It's always tempting to edit out the mistakes, because we feel like we need to be perfect for people to think we know what we are doing. The truth is that everyone will run into difficulties from time to time, and I've learned that it is actually encouraging to leave the not so good parts in. 🥰
Any idea on why these are so hard to find? I bought what said was a type c but it most definitely is NOT and I cannot find the ones that look like your video anywhere! Silhouette is becoming infuriating with all this nonsense. I've been a user since the beginning and never had so many issues!
I don't know why everything is in such short supply right now. It seems that most of the tools are out of stock on the website, and there are slim pickings on Amazon, as well. I have had some luck with Michaels website, though.
