1991 KX250 ep12 crank rebuilt and engine back together. Interesting fact in description.
There are just some tools you don't have. A tribute to a friend of a friend, I was helped by two different people on this part of the project.
Matt Wade, thank you for the studs.
Steve Childress, thank you for the help rebuilding the crank.
I believe we finally turned the corner on this old beast and are in the home stretch of getting her done and to the track.
Interesting fact for anyone reading this. In 1991 when I had just bought my older version of this bike (my first 2 stroke) I was invited to go riding with the 10th placed ama 125 east coast supercross rider Steve Childress. I had never met Steve before or after that ride but loved watching him ride that day and realizing how slow I really was.
Fast forward 33 years, as I am rebuilding a version of the bike I had then, my stepfather introduces me to a 74-year-old man (that I had never met) that still rides single track and helped me rebuild the crank. This beast was none other than Steve Childress Senior, the father of the young man I rode with 33 years ago. Small world.

Thanks for watching!
That looks better than new. Absolutely beautiful 🤩
Thank you
What torque settings you using, 1 Ugah Dugguh or 2 ugahdugahs?
Depends, actually it was 25ft/lb on the cylinder and 18 on the head. Did happen to strip two head studs because my torque wrench wasn’t accurate, and that bike should have never had copper washers, live and learn. went and got my first digital wrench today and replaced the studs.
Great videos and very informative! Also you are great motivation for the to continue re building my 92 suzuki dr350. I currently have everything (hopefully) laid out and just need to put everything back together. One question that i cant seem to find the answer to, is what viable options do i have for the engine aesthetic wise. The options I know of or heard of ar: 1.Clean/brush/vapour blast the engine and leave it as is bare aluminium. (This although a great look in my opinion... Has sparked up the biggest debate of whether the engine will start to oxidize and look bad due to it as well as all the dirt grime that will get stuck to it due the the lack of a protective coat. 2. Powder coating the whole engine which i know has a good result but at a high price. 3. Do a good prep work and use spay on engine enamel. Cheap and easy to touch up i assume?... However i think look wise it doesn't look that great and color selection in my part of the world for high temp spay on paints isnt that great. Silver would be the closest to factory look. I am mostly seeking for an opinion on the bare aluminum option... Vapour blasted or brushed, how do you think it will hold up? Keep in mind this bike will be used off road, it will not be a showroom bike. Thanks in advance. Looking forward to hearing your valuable opinion and sorry for the lengthy post and my limited english.
Yes the bare aluminum can oxidize. If this is a bike that will not get cleaned after riding and or left outside then I do not recommend bare aluminum. If I'm correct that is an air-cooled bike so I wouldn't think powder coating the fins would be a great idea as it would impede the heat transfer. Cerakote would be the best option but, bare aluminum will work if you keep it clean and dry when not in use. I ride all my bikes in the woods and on track when possible and have not had any issues with the bare aluminum, but I do wash them, blow them off and put them in the garage when done. Good luck and Thank you
Man I love those tables. It's been a game changer for me.
Spoke too soon. That vapor blast cab is a game changer...lol.
Definitely nice to have around.
Nice bike I have the same one I trail ride with it

Grind that gear down so you can get the clip on .
Got one other option to try first hopefully have the video this weekend
Love it

Aftermarket carb tm 40 pumper, i prefer stock. Stock headers are good for low to mid power.
Agreed, been digging into it over the last few weeks
Could you get a relief machined in the water pump drive gear deep enough to get your snap ring on? I can’t imagine there’s a huge load on that gear
I agree probably not much loas there, it is definitely a good idea, Thank you
Studs can be made on a lathe.
Absolutely correct, I just don't happen to have one. I will check with a local machine shop. Thank you
Crotch rocket with knobbies! Going to be a fun bike man!
Lmfao, it was barely running, you couldn’t turn it or push it very good, was a bear to load, almost killed myself on the test ride because it wouldn’t steer, but I have plans…
whats BRP?
The Honda XR650R is also known as the Big Red Pig, and has been shortened to BRP.

Nice work. On my next one I’m going to find a powder coat setup like you’ve got, much better than spray paint. Did you manage to find a new chain slider or is that the original? I had to do some repair work on mine, couldn’t find a new one.
That’s is the original, it was in decent shape. I did see a couple on eBay
@@Gordupnorth2 that was the original, they have them in the Netherlands and uk on eBay but there not cheap

Thats the year model rm 250 i had.
I loved that rm too, could turn on a dime
You’re zinc plating turned out really well, I’m going to have to get one of those set ups
I was surprised at how well it did, if the amps are excessively to high it will etch the metal, but overall it was pretty easy to do.
lol the brake spring bolt through the clutch case housing is pretty good…. Never know what you’re going to find with these old bikes!
Definitely a first for me
New sub here, just found ur channel, great job on the tank! What gritt sand papers did u use? The price of the bike would be cheap here in the uk, great job, great channel👍

Looking good! Those old Pro Circuit pipes are like finding gold. Mine has a PSI pipe on it, don’t know much about PSI, I think they’re more of a snowmobile outfit. Goi g to run it though, can’t find anything else

Looking forward to it. I have a POS Rm i bought recently. Mine runs but the bones are beat to shit. Pegs, air filter, chain guide was completely sawed in 2, plastics, tank nut broke, missing seat strap, needs new brakes, rotors, chain adjusters, front hub rotor bolt holes are to big on 2 out of the 6, chain, sprockets, etc etc etc. I thing ill end up with some excel wheels, new plastics, maybe some paint on the frame and retro 90s graphics and call it good.
Sounds almost as bad as the kx I’m working on, good luck and let me know if you need any help
@@BrokeMX i just need bushings machined for the totally wore out brake pedal. Can't find aftermarket. OEM is $200 or so.
I have used cut up hose clamps, soup cans, and soda cans in a pinch. Not saying it’s right, but it works. Let me know the dimensions of what you need, JWilliams@BrokeMX.com
@BrokeMX good idea. I watched a video madmarc put out. He found a bushing from McMaster Carr. Once I get the new brake pedal bolt I'll measure it. Then press the old out and take measurements off it. I have a machinist that will do it. But I hate to ask because he does that stuff on his own time.
That’s awesome
Nice repairs you did, they look clean

For the music during the vapor blasting get too loud compare to the average sound of your video. Looks correct at the end. Thanks for the videos
I apologize I usually try to normalize it, was in a rush trying to get my computer functioning after hard drive crash. Should have everything in place now to improve future videos. Thank you for the feedback
I can see this bike being completely redone with the frame blue green plastic with blue and white badging white renthal bars and blue rims I love these bikes
I hope you are aware that not all bearings are created equal. The Chinese made bearings that are super cheap are made with severely inferior materials. They look like decent parts but they simply do not hold up. The metals they are made from and the heat treatment they receive to temper the metals properly is severely inferior to a factory oem bearing from Japan. Basically you are really asking for it when you buy cheap bearings.
I am painfully aware of this from working on cars, even the ones that come from Detroit axel nowadays are junk…, I try and use stock when possible but sometimes you have to go outside the box and find the best alternative. Thank you
Reminds me of the American made bike in winners take all 😮 are those oem plastics looks awesome 👌

That would be awesome
Another great video!!! Lots of great information!!!
Thank you
Why don't you order all your bearings & seals from a bearing supplier? Kawasaki doesn't make bearings, they source them from bearing manufacturers. I've never come across a bearing I couldn't source from a bearing supplier.
I agree, some of them can be a little difficult if you don’t have a number and you’re going off of dimensions. Just trying to keep it simple on the video so people that don’t know can see that there are other options. Thank you
@@BrokeMX I still remember bank in the day when ktm came out with pds rear suspension, the lower shock mount used a teflon or something like that heim joint. KTM dealerships charged a stupid amount of money for them and everybody said they're not available from anybody but ktm. I sourced them back to INA Bearings. I ended up selling them at half the ktm price and also offered a brass version people could grease via a nipple.
That’s awesome, there is almost always a solution if you have the desire and patience to find it.
Final question. What did you use to remove the linkage bosses? Lots of material there to deal with.
