I also have hydraulic tailgate. Mine closes fine. When opening i have to lift tailgate half way because of worn struts.

Why did you sell it?

I replaced the rear brake lines on my e53 X5 and did not have to lower the rear axel. This e39 is too tight to access the line crossing over the axel. My e39 right rear line is leaking exactly like the one in the video. I will not attempt the left rear until it leaks. I will coat the left rear line before corrosion wins. They rust through right where the round hole in the plastic bottom cover exposed th brake line to water spray. Nice job getting it done!

I bought mine from Ebay as readily painted. Not sure about durability since I have not driven with thr car.

I've also done this once to my E39. Bought the cheapest available new fan motor and thought it to be good since it's a new unit. Surely it was.. whole car was shaking with higher speeds, did send it back to the store and lubed up the original one and it's still on it's place and working. For my luck the original had much of brushes left but it worked weakly since the car had not been driven very often and it was dry too from the bushes. At some point if it ever starts to show signs of wearing, I will also go for a new quality unit. I had an used original as a spare, but not anymore since my buddy needed it already 😎

That middle section support is not that expensive, but.. you can just drop it to a citric acid and paint it and it's good again with a little effort though.

Been there with a sedan one, on a floor with a jack. Btw copper is the way to go on these in my opinion. This escalated exactly like my projects do. It's bit funny how your accent in English as estonian is exactly the style as Finnish have it too.

ok, you mentioned that it needs to be topped of to the + sign. but HOW did you do it since you didnt have a refill plug? im curious, have the same issue with my tailgate, plus a broken cable in the harness in the driverside corner(tried extending it, but no luck).

I've made the same mistake, I believed in the BMW catalog. x) These E39s with or without the option have two big struts. Also yea, don't put any ATF in this system... The pump and the rest of the system don't like it at all. It's too much thick. Great job by the way :)

next time when you remove glass, clean firmly the seals sitting in door frames going around glass, There is a lot of sand there and you can hear it still very well.

You did an awesome work! Your bimmer is great, It deserves the attention. I know it sounds like a cliche but they really don't make them like they used to.

the reinforcement plate looks a little bent probably that's why the hassle fitting the bumper but it turned out ok in the end👋

No worries mate, it is only a bumper. Could have been way worse.

Don't worry, it happens to the best of us. I also like OEM parts in my E61, but only for critical components or something that is obviously much much better quality then cheap knock offs

Rear hatch shocks are behind or inside the hinges. Pain in the ass to do.

I was just on the way rechecking how to replace my struts and then I saw this fresh video.. I have the same system and have done this operation at least three times. (But not to worry I have my touring since 2005) So you did the "trial and error" program very nice. For sure the touring needs in total four struts of OEM quality, one pair for the tailgate and one pair for the glass window and the method of filling the hydraulic system is to my knowledge the right procedure. (You really only need to replace the bottom cup, not to damage the fragile hydraulic components) A good way to notice and diagnose malfunctions on the lid is. If it sounds inconsistent or irregular during the opening process then it is to little fluid. If the tailgate won't open the whole way Its probably the struts not longer be able to lift the amount of weight of the lid. If you notice that the glass window won't open by itself (you have to use som Forde to open it ond closing it - well the struts are bad. As usual: Great video and I'm still learning how to make our magnificent cars survive ourselves.
