Zondervan totally eviscerated the Thompson Chain Reference Bible after they bought it from Kirkbride. They took out the beloved Archeological Supplement by Dr. Owen. They removed all of those charming hand drawn maps showing the travels of famous Bible Characters through the Holy Land. About 1/3 of the 1988 5th Edition of the Thompson Chain Reference Bible has been excised. So now basically you are being ripped off by Zondervan by being sold a truncated, watered down Thompson at premium prices.

This is my everyday Bible as I read through the KJV for the first time. I chose it over the cameo, which is also my favorite, due to the ease of use with the reference column. I also use the TBS classic reference bible as my on the go Bible since they have the same pagination

The Bible worth with black cover is not 4th edition.

Hi Mark, I have both of them and the wide margin is about 0.5 font smaller than the standard and is a bit more of a strain for me to read.

Oh and another matter with my TCR was it only had one ribbon instead of two

26:22 hey Mark … I got my Thompson large print several years ago in black calfskin and it’s the exact same run as yours… I got this one at a reduced cost for the reason of the alignment issue of the pages you had shown … I paid 65 U.S. dollars for it. I still use this bible and love it. I so much enjoy your videos very informative

I bought mine in genuine leather- so glad this bible has remained as the masthead of study bibles for Thomas Nelson- compare this to either the updated NIV or ESV study Bible and price per pound I think it comes in a close second but if you’re an old fundamentalist, then it comes in first. The KJV sb leather version would be over 120$ if it were the niv or ESV.

I purchased this Bible after having the hardcover, because I wanted the Apocrypha. After using it for a little over a year I continually find it a joy, being just the right size, to me, for reading in bed. It is hard to beat the work of Royal Jongbloed and their execution here is flawless. The Apocrypha here is more complete than most Bibles, including our Roman Catholic ones. On first seeing it after delivery I wondered whether I'd find the calfskin cover to be too smooth for easy holding but it hasn't been the case. I'm not a fan in general of center reference columns, but I also really enjoy the large chapter and verse postings on each page. This is so very easy to scan quickly through when looking for a particular passage.

Yes - my Concord (black goatskin) is pretty poor with print consistency. At one point in John it basically goes to grey and pink text!

Are these red letter editions? Also are they on eBay now?

I still have my large print Fourth edition that I bought new, still have in the box. You are so very right about the difference in quality. I also own a fifth edition NASB with Flimsy paper and a feeling of overall cheapness. Even after a half century (I bought my fourth edition in college in the 70s) It is still supple and eminently usable. I don’t feel deprived missing the updates. Poor swap to get those in exchange for the drop in quality. Thank you so much for a great video!

Natural question to me: how long would I plan to use the Bible I purchase? Do I replace it every year? I have a Thompson chain reference that I bought in the 1970s in college that I still use, even though I had to save up for it And sacrifice at the time. Its cost over all of these decades has been almost Nothing. If you amortize the cost of either of these Bibles over the number of years, they should be able to serve, the actual difference in cost should be extremely small. Best wishes from Texas.

I am a Roman Catholic and I have never seen this Bible. I just purchased last year the ESV with apocrypha Cambridge Diadem. I really like the Milo font and just got in a full Yap Schuyler ESV with apocrypha. You being British, whatever happened to Oxford University press with their Bibles? 50 years ago over here in Texas. They sold really high quality Bibles, but they seem to have disappeared and only offering stuff like hardback now and very few of them. Do you know anything about why this happened? I hear what you’re saying about cost. But: how long does the average person use a Bible? I need somebody who does daily reading not somebody who buys one and never uses it. I have around 25 Bibles, maybe more, and some of mine are a half century old One is going to use a Bible for many years say a decade or more, is the difference in price for purchase really going to make any difference amortized overtime? I want the best that I can get which is usually goatskin. I have found when I bought cheap Bibles in my youth, that every day , it irritated me that it was not a great quality. Though I can easily afford goat skin now, I would save up if I had to to afford it. I have a few luxuries in my life, but one of them is the sensual, ultra flexible feel of my favorite Bibles for daily reading . Thank you very much for this comparison. Best wishes from Texas!

Be-careful of the new "improved" Comfort Print Thompson from Zondervan. They totally dismantle, expurgate, and in my opinion trash the legacy of Dr. Frank Charles Thompson. They ripped out the Archeological Supplement that we all knew and loved. Gone are the charming and useful hand-drawn maps which showed the journeys and travels of important figures of the Bible. Remember those illustrations with the little footprints and dotted lines? Also many other study helps that were located in the back of the 1988 5th (and last for Kirkbride) edition are no longer included in your "new and improved" Comfort Print edition from Zondervan. Oddly....I do not feel comforted very much by the new rip off. Ok I get off my soap box.....sorry Brother Burton.

I’ve loved the pilot friction highlighters. However, I learned that they are erased thermally. So, if you use them be sure you do not leave your Bible anywhere it would become hot or it will erase. So, don’t go shopping after church without bringing your Bible home first.

Hey Mark do you know if there were ever any first edition Pitts in blue that were goat, calf, or genuine? The only ones I have seen are bonded leather. I could get a rebind sure but I kinda just want to have an original. The same thing goes for the wide margin cameo, did you ever hear of one in blue any type of leather?

Took a look through this Bible at a Christian bookstore yesterday. It is a nice Bible. There were several biblically sound nouthetic counselors that contributed. An index of contributors would be helpful. Once i can affird it, Ill use it to counsel people and on chaplaincy visits. Never used the CSB but as its translated as a formal/functional blend is probably a good choice fir explaing the Scriptires clearly and practically.

How does the CSB have a diadem and not the NKJV! Cmon Cambridge … I’ve got the Pitt and the Aquila, my $ is waiting for you

I have the blue version and love it! If Cambridge made the diadem the size of the topaz, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Thanks for showing the blue calfskin version, Mark. I recently purchased the CSB Diadem in red calf split leather and it is beautiful, but those orange and blue calfskin versions are exquisite. My new CSB will be my summer reading project and I'm really looking forward to it. Like you, I'm pleased that Cambridge has published the CSB and is exploring other binding colors. Hopefully, they will eventually publish a CSB Topaz.

The green goatskin looks great. Even the black goatskin looks good, but I'd buy the blue. Although, the dark brown calfsplit is less expensive, and I like the look of that very much as well... This is a lovely Bible. I hope I can get one soon.

Mark, Thanks for the video. I live in the States and I have a family member going to Cambridge soon. If I get a Bible from eBay and I want to avoid paying the delivery, is there a way that my family member pick it up from a location? How would that work? Just curious.
