Off-road Mower Steering Upgrades | Cast Iron Axle
มุมมอง 351วันที่ผ่านมา
I removed the old stock-stamped steel axle from the Jeep and installed a new cast iron axle. I also gusset the front spindles, made the exhaust less obnoxious, braced the main steering drag link, and installed steering stops to make the front end bulletproof. The main tierod upgrade is in this video: th-cam.com/video/7o4XlJ4-d-8/w-d-xo.html Thanks for watching!
Custom Glasspack Muffler Build for ATV
มุมมอง 32414 วันที่ผ่านมา
I custom-build a homemade glass pack, resonator, and cherry bomb muffler from the original muffler on my Arctic Cat 400 4x4. It is pretty much a straight-through design with free-flowing baffles to make it quiet but have some good sound and flow much better than stock. Off-road Mower Custom Rear Bumper
มุมมอง 27321 วันที่ผ่านมา
I drove in the woods to find some scrap pieces of steel and hauled them out with the Jeep (off-road lawnmower). I then fabricated the tube and square tube steel pieces into a custom rear bumper on the Jeep. Everything looks and functions well except for the trailer hitch, which I will change in the future. Good song
Idle it up do u not here that slit rod nock that's that top connecting rod starving for oil these motors are tough but u let them idle low like that for awhile it will eventually throw a rod but other then that they are my favorite motors been running my 21hp opposed twin for years and it don't sound like that it's smooth with no ticks or nocks
Thanks man, I know about that now from a lot of other people in the comments and I did idle it up. Do you know if the single cylinders are the same way or are they fine at low idle too?
I cant mud anything rn we got like a foot and a half of snow lol
Dang! Unfortunately I don’t/rarely ever get snow where I live.
@IngenGarage I live up in Michigan it's hell up here We get well below 0° in the winter and over 100° in the summer and super humid
I found that acetone works best for touching up over spray I get it as nail polish remover from Walmart
Oh ok, I thought it was a little bit on the strong side and would remove the forest green color.
@IngenGarage I just lightly run it off with a cotton ball and qtips If u sit there and scrub it then yeah u will probably start taking the original powerder coat off but usual the spray paint just wipe off as It's best to do it while not dry
@ClappedBayou300 Alright, thanks for the info man!
i have a stage 3 just without a cam and i can not get it to run any tips?
put a cam in er!
I think you need to build a shifter like the rat rod racing mower
Yeah possibly I might change it but for now ill just keep it here.
What fuel pump are you running? Mine has a mechanical pump, and it's super hard to start in the cold.
This one is electric, although sometimes it cuts out when you’re riding. I think it’s the relay thats bad but other than that it always also started when it’s cold. There is hardly any videos on TH-cam about this side x side which is why I made this one. Also the rear end blew again so I’ll be making a video on repairing that soon. Pretty much wont go forward or reverse until the shifting splines align but then it’ll go, you’ll see in the video soon!
@IngenGarage thanks for the feedback, I you could post a video about the fuel pump it would be great, my carb is a monster to start in the cold, I don't think the enricher is working properly.
@3Wheels1Block It might be a bad accelerator pump is bad or the choke, might can make a manual choke linkage or find a replacement carb that could work.
@IngenGarage I wish I could find a manual replacement, I've not had any luck. I'm sure someone has retrofitted some stuff on there at some point
@3Wheels1Block Yeah that sucks, you could probably rig up an electric fuel pump in it.
What I would do as more free mods is to hook up a parking break and also add a skid plate to protect underneath, like the off-road mower, or what I would like to see is a way to strengthen the front axle and spindles!
Yeah ill definitely make the hand brake, beef up the front end for free and maybe come up with a skid plate.
Has a manual clutch, top speed currently is around 50mph at 9000RPMs, with tall gearing it’s about 79mph at 9000RPMs!
Buddy gave me a mower, identical to this one. Same engine, same color even. He stopped using it when the shifter broke (probably stuck in gear) I assumed it was the same 6 speed Tecumseh that's in my other mowers, but reading the other comments i guess it would be no surprise that the transaxle is broken somehow. Get crazy and make a 4x4?
Yeah this one is a Spicer and people say it will blow when they are locked, and I didn’t plan on locking it anyway. I do plan to do a 4WD lawnmower in the future, however this is a budget build project. I originally wanted to do a budget build on my off-road mower but over time I bought things and didn’t work out as planned so thats why Im doing it on this one, just to see how good I can make it for free or on the dirt cheap.
i think you should stick a inline six in it
Maybe on a future build… with a 2 speed Power-glide transmission perhaps!
What kind of rear rack is on the Craftsman?
Its the original back bumper bar with 3/4inch steel pipe welded on the sides to hold on better when steering, side slopes, and holding stuff in place when strapped down. In the center is a 1/2 inch steel pipe to take up the open space in the back, support it and keep stuff locked in.
@IngenGarage really cool mod!
I love that lt1000 style almost can't ever kill the brigs only part i don't like is the transmission
Yeah the Spicers aren’t really the best. I wish it had a Peerless.
I would be careful with that rearend i locked mine up, otherwise the tractor looks good
Yeah "spudstudios3342" said this was a Spicer transmission and they blow up when they are locked. I wasn't planning on locking it anyway, but now I know not to lock it now. It will be interesting to compare the open diff to the locked diff on the Jeep to see how much better it really is!
@@IngenGaragenice!
Add roll bars and a vertical shaft
Idk maybe one day on another build perhaps, this is just a build to see how cheap we can get this mower to function as a go-kart on a budget.
can't wait to see the build! you could if you want to pulley swap the rear, put idlers to clear the shifter
Yeah I do want to pulley swap the front with the mower deck drive pulley and maybe custom make a 5-6 inch pulley for the transaxle possibly, as well as put in some idler pulleys like you mentioned. Again this is a budget build so I'm going to do whatever I can for free or on the cheap.
@ yep
because thats a spicer, id be a bit more careful with it, and not lock it because all ive seen is blown transaxles when they are locked. and yes that is a 28ci engine, ive heard that they love to last forever. also, on those engines, there is a metal kind of cup on the top for holding the mesh on, you can drill 3 holes in an old deck pulley and just bolt it on for a pull start.
Yeah, I knew it wasn't a Tecumseh transaxle and it was something different. Thank you for telling me about them blowing if they are lock, I wasn't planning on locking it any though. I am going to rig up a idler pulley for the pull start maybe next video. I love these I/C Briggs motors, they do very well! I'll keep em runnin strong!
I think you should stretch it and lower it. Put the rear wheels behind the seat.
Ehh idk, maybe Ill do something like that in a future build perhaps. The idea with this build is how good can we make it for as cheap as we possibly can kinda thing.
I'm gonna be following this build got a very similar build I'm gonna be doing
Alright nice!
Yes i cant wait to see how this turns out
Any free mods or ideas for this thing that I should do? Let me know.
You should use the deck lowering shifter thingy as an e-brake like you did on your race mower, but instead of connecting it to the brake drum, connect it to the disk brake on the differential
Yeah I am going to definitely use the mower deck lever as the brake. I'll probably make it like the one on the off-road lawnmower "Jeep" and connect it up to the transaxle brakes(which is a disc brake...) but I know what you mean, its just that this is a cheap budget build. Pretty much make it as good as I can with spending as little money as possible.
Ive made these mowers into quads and atvs for years. One thing i completely recommend if you ride these on neighborhood roads, dirt roads, or basically any public space is to put a Slow Moving Vehicle triangle on it. Its saved me from getting hit before.
@@1BG0 Alright thanks man! This mower is going to stay out here at this farm and I never ride my offroad mower on the main roads hardly ever. Sometimes I do with 4-wheelers, but they move much faster than even pulley-swaped lawnmowers obviously.
I have yet to do this to my mower, but you could but on a round slide carburetor (given you jet it correctly), port and polish the head for more airflow, get a nice exhaust for it. Obviously pulley swap it. Maybe get some knobby tires, etc. I’ve seen a lot of your videos and I’m sure whatever you do you’ll get some fun out of it! Keep up the work man!
Does this mean I would burn through belts less frequently on my mini bike because it’s engaging more efficiently
Yeah probably so because it isn’t maxing out all the time and not pulling on the motor as hard. Another tip, make sure your pulleys are aligned perfectly. If they are slightly misaligned the belt will want to stay slightly engaged and will get burned up within a couple of hours.
Gotta love those free wheelers! Neighbor gave me a 97 Polaris Sportsman 500 that turned out to be a decent machine but the 4WD never worked. Rotella T6 is full syn. and way cheaper in the gallon jug than quarts of specialty motorcycle oil. It's perfectly fine for wet clutches, too. Not a good idea to drill jets. Just buy new ones. They're very precise and the drill bit won't hold the tolerance very well.
Oh ok! Thanks man for the oil tips, definitely going to get some of that next time. The jet thing we just kinda did it because we thought it was on the lean side because the it didn't feel that powerful, but oh well its a learning experience for all of us isn't it!
I like buying old neglected ATVs and sleds for cheap and resurrecting them. I just bought an 05 Suzuki Eiger 400, the sibling of this Arctic Cat, for $400. Needed a new Flywheel and top end from sitting for 6 years. I bought a Niche Brand Flywheel and Top end kit for about $165 total. Hard to believe how cheap that stuff is and it runs like new now. A couple other little things and I'm about $650 into it. Mine is in really nice shape w/ 1550 miles and 4x4. I can't complain!
Nice! That's a much better deal than I got... Mine had 3600 miles, I had to do a complete engine rebuild, good overhaul, and a other little things, I got about a little over $1500 in it. Yeah I like getting older 4-wheelers running because even with $1500 its still a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a brand new one for $5,000+ with every little thing electronic and that is eventually going to break in a few years. Mine is practically brand new since I rebuilt the motor, cleaned everything, cosmetics, and does what I need it to do. My dads old 98 Honda Foreman 400 is still going strong with the original motor! Also is yours the manual or automatic? The automatics have a good reverse gear with an override button that works, the manuals have high-range reverse only and it sucks butt. Just curious because I have a whole video on how to make the low reverse in the manual if you need to.
@@IngenGarage Yes, I got a great deal! Mine is Auto. I used to prefer sport quads / manuals but I'm now 46 Years old and prefer the Utility machines w/ autos. Just easier to ride and I plow with an auto. Auto is way easier than shifting gears while plowing under a load. And low gear will climb a tree if you need it to. I hear guys complaining about belt slip but I never experienced that. I also don't abuse my machines in mud holes or gas tank deep water.
@@anthonyg6221 Yeah I hear you, as long you use it and not abuse it. Autos are definitely faster and easier without a doubt, but I think the manuals are good for really low speeds, constant speeds, and sound better shifting depending on the motor. I do mud mine but when it starts getting up to your legs that's a bit too much, it not a boat its a 4-wheeler yk lol.
fun stuff
Yep!
"Oopsie, speedbump" got me dying
I am looking at an Artic car 300 and CFmoto 400. I think you talked me into the CFmoto.
Oh ok, is it a brand new one or are you going to buy an older one?
The swooshing sound effect is kind of annoying
Alright, I tried to put it in there to make it a bit more engaging. I probably did a bit too much on that one.
@IngenGarage constructive criticism 👌
Is that Garfield ?
Looks like him but no lol.
cats name is lucy, also that axle is going to be sweet
Congratulations you win!
heck yeah! very soon i'm gonna do a couple steering upgrades on one of mine
Yeah its definitely worth doing!
Nice!!! I just took a cast iron axle off a bigger lawn tractor and put it on my offroad one! The steering stops are a good idea with the deck parts i probably need to make some! The busings in the middle of the axle i would replace soon i had one completly fall apart on me and the axle had 2inches of play. Love these videos with the offroad mower thanks for the great content i would love to see more!
Thanks man!
Where can I buy this??
Just go on ebay and search "AYP chassis lawnmower cast iron front axle"
Any word on how to not burn up belts?
Make sure your pulleys are properly aligned. “break them in” for about 10 minutes and let them stretch out. either engage or disengage the clutch and not slipping the belt by partially pushing the clutch in. and make sure everything is out if the way and not rubbing on anything.
@ Thanks, I will use a straight edge to check my alignment, and the break in part I hadn’t known about
Alright!
Are you planing on doing a video with the racing mower soon?
Not really at the moment, Ive just been busy with other things, I need a new fuel pump system on the engine, new steering set up, lowered seat, and maybe a speed up kit for the transmission if I can find one.
I had to re-edit/export this video 4 times because the audio kept messing up... fun times!
This i really cool love the vids keep it up
Welcome to Virginia Beach.
Can I also do porting without the grinding tool? Because i wonder if a round file would work and use a 320 grit, 400 grit and 600 grit sandpaper to smooth the ports.
Yeah that probably would work fine to get all the casting trash out of all the ports. Some spots maybe tight and u could use a tool but you should get most to all of it. Might can polish the exhaust with that sandpaper or even finer grit but the intake leave it rough(like sandpaper rough) and that will allow the air and fuel to atomize better.
@IngenGarage ok thanks
@@jarelsuckrajh5932 No problem!
Looks exactly like mine same color and year. 😊
I just did this to my 400 today, unfortunately I didn’t make it smooth enough I guess bc it’s not wanting to go out of high, I got it to go into reverse one time
Nice! I couldn’t find nothing online besides some 20 year old forums but thats it when I did mine. I figured I would make a video on it because I know other people must have the same problems.
@ they are super reliable but damn also very under powered, I’ve been trying to find different mods for the 400 manual to get a little more power
Yeah like compared to the Hondas they will run circles around them, I tried modifying the muffler and make the airbox flow a bit better but it didn’t do a massive difference. My AC 300 is the same way. On top of that they make a high reverse ONLY for a 700 pound atv, utility 4x4. I don’t know what they were thinking. Why even put low range in it yk. Reverse on anything should always be as low as the lowest gear if not lower.
I would rather have reliability over horsepower if I had to choose.
hey buddy thats not a twin no were near dude push mower could beat that my mower goes 36 so i coul;d tottaly beat you
Eh idk, this will top out in high 40s maybe early 50s. Not the fastest at acceleration but will eventually get up to speed. As far as this not being a twin… it’s not a single cylinder and not a triple or more, and it says “TWIN” on the motor.
@@IngenGarage mhm sure pal
This isn’t some serious business man lol, this is just some guys converting lawnmowers into custom builds. We all are just playing with toys yk.
Did it work long term? Thanks
For the first while like couple of months it slowed it but after a while it slowly faded off, however the next oil change I didn’t use it and it leaks faster so yes it does do something to slow the leak!
It definitely sounds better. Just more aggressive tone
Yeah I agree, I wish it did sound a tad bit more aggressive but oh well it’ll get louder overtime.
I don't think it should be a debate over which one is better, 4 wheeler or off-road mowers. I think it's all about what's more fun to you. Fun doesn't always mean fast. Fun to me is building something cool using it for an extreme purpose that the factory never intended. It's about the tinkering, and the upgrades to see if it can do that trail with this mod or that mod. To me, that's the fun part.
I totally agree man!
Self clearance, I love it! I've used that particular technique in the past a couple times! LOL
I really applaud you being a younger guy getting out there actually doing stuff, teaching yourself skills that every man should know instead of letting video games consume your whole life. I'm proud of younger guys like you that actually have ambition to do cool stuff. I think you'll do well in life if you keep on honing your skills. May your New Year bring peace and prosperity.
Thank you sir! Much appreciated, I was kind of an outcast in highschool because I was the only one working on atvs, lawnmowers, gokarts, etc. Never played sports, no girls liked me, and a lot of people laughed at this channel but oneday Ill be laughing at them.
@IngenGarage In my eyes, you can already laugh at them.
😄💯🎄
Lol interesting way to list what's done to it😅😅
