Welcome to Outback with Backman.
I have created this channel to share my hiking and backpacking adventures. Part of this channel is dedicated to my backyard, featuring hiking routes and hiking trails in areas such as the Tillamook State Forest, Clatsop State Forest, private timberland open to public access, Bureau of Land Management lands, and United States Forest Service lands. Other than established trail systems which feature the ocean beaches or hit a few high points and views and skirt the edges near the highways, there aren’t a lot of established hikes. I often go off-trail to create my own.
This channel documents my broader wanderings to diverse places such as the Three Sisters Wilderness and Mount Hood Wilderness, among others. It could even feature gear reviews and photography tips.
-About-
My background includes teaching, wildland firefighting, and hiking in this area. I hope to bring the perspective of an older hiker to this channel.

Hiking Angora Peak, the most scenic point along the Oregon Coast.
My buddy Mike and I made our annual trip up Angora Peak, one of the best viewpoints along the entire Oregon coast. Located just north of Neah-Kah-Nie Mountain in Oswald West State Park on the Northern Oregon Coast, you can see all the way south to Cape Lookout. To the north, you can see past Cannon Beach and Ecola State Park, and across the Columbia to the hills in Southwest Washington.
A full hike up to the peak and back is around 8 miles. We cut it short, choosing to take a side trip to the old cabin and then up to where we had some good views.
This hike requires walking up logging roads until you reach a grassed-over logging road, then take a side trail up to the ridge, and then along another old road. The views are worth the uphill until it is downhill hiking.

January Trask Mountain Hike
มุมมอง 962 หลายเดือนก่อน
Trask Mountain is the tallest peak in Yamhill County, Oregon. Located in the Oregon Coast Range, Trask Mountain used to be the site of a fire lookout. The road system starts on public land, then travels through public and state lands, and at the time of hiking the private landowners had the land open for access. One should always check the land status before hiking.
Hiking on the Idiot Creek Trail
มุมมอง 2112 หลายเดือนก่อน
Idiot Creek was the sire of a logging camp back in the days of Railroad Salvage Logging. It was so remote and nasty that "Only an Idiot Would Work There." The camp is long gone, but the name stuck. This hike runs up a ridge after crossing Elk Creek, a tributary to the Wilson River. The trail is the end point of a new section being constructed from the old site of Idiotville over to Ell Creek. I...
Hiking Huckleberry Mountain near Mount Hood
มุมมอง 702 หลายเดือนก่อน
Huckleberry Mountain is a peak directly across from Mount Hood in Oregon's Cascade Range. It is part of an extensive trail system that surrounds the mountain. Starting at Wildwood Park, the trail works its way up the flanks and through the forest. Once it climbs there are some viewpoints with mountain views.
Hiking on the Historic Barlow Road
มุมมอง 342 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Barlow road was an immigrant route through the Cascade Mountains. Oregon Trail travelers would use it to bypass the Columbia River section. This is a nice hike. Fairly easy in this section.
Hiking Axe Ridge
มุมมอง 252 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Oregon Coast Range offers off-season hiking opportunities. Axe Ridge is one such location. The name drew us in. Unfortunately, a fall scraped my knee a little, but it also bruised it pretty good. We ended up hiking back up to the truck when it started stiffening up.
Randall Hill Snow Hike
มุมมอง 292 หลายเดือนก่อน
In early March 2024, Mike and I tried to hike up to the top of Randall Hill in the Oregon Coast Range. It had snowed so we packed snowshoes and microspikes, and we were ready for anything. Unfortunately, one of my snowshoes broke, ending the hike. Hiking the Oregon Coast Range is a viable option in the winter when the higher elevations in the Oregon Cascades are snowed in. There are only a limi...
Hiking along the Salmon River near Mount Hood.
มุมมอง 1025 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is a hike along the Salmon River near Welches, Oregon, on the flanks of Mount Hood. Oregon has more than one salmon river. This hike crosses a short piece of national forest and then runs into the Salmon Huckleberry Wilderness. We followed the river until we turned around near Goat Camp. This is a great hike.
Hiking Stanley Peak in the Oregon Coast Range
มุมมอง 495 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is a winter hike up to Stanley Peak in the northern Oregon Coast Range. Stanley Peak involves hiking on some old logging roads and cat roads before following a trail to the peak. The coast range is lower elevation than the cascades. As a result, it sees much less snow. One can usually find a hike somewhere that isn't snowed out. However, it is usually cold and can be cold and rainy. Be pre...
Diamond Mill to Kings Mountain trailhead
มุมมอง 1816 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Wilson River trail parallels Highway 6, the Wilson River Highway for quite a way. One section, Kings Mountain trailhead to Diamond Mill OHV park is a dandy hike. It takes one high up on the side of the ridge and it crosses over the ridge up to Kings Junior. The Kings Junior trail used to have Mazama signs but they are long gone. This hike is in the middle of the Oregon Coast Range and offer...
Soapstone Lake and Cole Mountain Hike
มุมมอง 1646 หลายเดือนก่อน
My hiking buddy Mike and I decided to do the short hike from Highway 53 around Soapstone Lake. We then driven in on Cole Mountain Road and then hiked up to the top of Cole Mountain. The views were amazing from the Cole Mountain hike. These hikes are located in the Northern Oregon Coast Range. The best route is to take Highway 26 to Necanicum Junction, where you turn onto the winding highway 53....
Gods' Thumb hike
มุมมอง 267 หลายเดือนก่อน
Lincoln City is a gorgeous coastal town along the central Oregon coast. The north end, an area called Roads End, has a hiking trail that leads out to a promontory that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. The hike offers stellar views. It is an easy-to-moderate hike that is well worth doing. There is a limited amount of roadside parking near the gate, however, you can't park right at the gate. This is ...
Crossing the Bar 12-30-23
มุมมอง 12K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
The local crab fishing fleet from Garibaldi on Tillamook Bay has to brave one of the most dangerous bar crossings on the West Coast. The boats dropped pots so they could catch crabs to be ready to pull pots when the season opened, so they made many trips hauling pots out to sea. They have to go out whenever they can even if it means rough conditions.

One of my favorite places to camp.
It is a really cool area.
The “story” I heard about the cabin is it was an elk poacher’s cabin that was detonated by law enforcement after the poacher met his end.
Thanks for sharing. Great vid.
Glad you liked it!
Great video. Thanks...
You are welcome!
Amazing video Don. Thanks for sharing!
You are welcome! Glad you enjoyed it.
Great! Can you please drop a google maps pin for where's the parking and start of the trail, please?
The start is at the gate. it is across from the upper road to Falcon Cove.
Such a cool hike with epic views south!
It's a great view from up there.
Great video!!!!! You know all the cool places!!!!! Thank you!!!!! Thank you!!!!!
Thanks! Not all the cool places lol
Still quite pretty in that gorgeous PNW weather :D
Wet feet just walking around the car... Time for new Gortex boots
Cool exploration, very Oregon like day!
Yes, very Western Oregon! There are old railroad grades up there that I want to hike.
Cool exploration, and nice forest views!
Lovely film man, place looks great! Enchanting 🥾🥾
Thanks!
Love all your videos. Especially the coast range areas. I hope to get back in Hiking shape and do some of these trails. Thank you again, Don.
Thanks!
A beautiful spot. Nice work!
It is cool country.
What a beautiful hike man, this trail looks great! 🥾
I hear you can get a good deal on snowshoes at Costco...Nice video
Thank you for the travelogue. One of the charms of the area is the people who explore it really want to be there.
It was a great place to hike. Everyone we met was friendly. It's on my short list to get back over there.
oFF ! this looks scary to oh godness
I was glad to be on the jetty. These folks on the boat are amazing.

Nice Work
Such a beautiful scenery man, gorgeous episode!
It's a beautiful hike in the late spring and early summer.
Piece of cake. Gotta know tides and run it at slack tide when eally rough.
Nice. Pretty.
great vid...abrupt ending.
Wow, that looks so dangerous.
Not much of a description from the Wilson River Trail to Kings Junior to the Kings Mt. trail (none really). Just one minute and much of that was about the weeds.
Yup, Tillamook Bay bar is like that and gets closed when conditions worsen. Only went over the bar in my 21ft pleasure craft when it was dead calm. Likewise for the Columbia river bar which I only crossed once.
Check out the crabbers coming in and going out of St. Paul in Alaska. I used to have my survival suit in my hand when we would come in during big following seas

I was stressed out just watching this!
The other captains and crews watch from the jetty. They called the Coast Guard when the first boat of the day got stuck in a bowl out by the red bouy. It made it out safely before the Coast Guard arrived.
Thanks. I couldn’t understand why the skipper wasn’t going for it when he seemed to have several good shots.
Always great videos....thanks, Don.
Beautiful trail, nice little video!
Very beautiful place my friend. Thank you so much for sharing this lovely video. Cheers.
Thanks! It was a fun hike and I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Wow, thank you so much for sharing such a wonderful film, my friend. The Trail look amazing. Great presentation. Thank you so much.
Thank you. The trail is a really nice wet day hike. I want to go back and do the rest that is up in the wilderness on a dry day.
Another one with Backman ;) Those views pheeew!
Tallest peak in the coast range. I need to get back up there on a crystal clear day.
Beautiful trail even with the highway nearby. The river is a wonderful highlight!
This is a gorgeous hike, and there are buildings and some old railroad remnants that make it pretty cool.
Don, you are a tick magnet!
Exactly!
Great adventure and a beautiful trail. I love those wet and muddy hikes. Great upload Backman!
Thanks. It was fun, believe it or not. Not a top ten or anything, but still fun.

i used to live in astoria, i have mixed feelings about this place. i used to love to chill here with friends, periodically throughout my life, but one time during a cross country practice september 13 2018 i was alone because i couldnt do the trail that everyone else went on because i felt weird then i had this weird psychotic panic attack thing i was running back and forth freaking out thinking i was gonna die for 10-15 minutes until it finally went away, dunno what happened to me that day, weird. i got to go back though, the good experiences definetely outweigh that bad one
Looks like a great hike! Wonderful views of Tillamook State Forest!
It was. It was good to get out. The long winter slowed things down a bit.
This looks absolutely gorgeous my friend, the whole area is stunning! 🥾
Nice adventure! Looks fantastic out there. You did great ;)
Absolutely stunning 🤯! Your talent for storytelling really shines through in this video.
Thank you!
Wow, what a nice hiking experience. Looks like a wonderful trail. Beautiful video Backman ;)
Thank you, It was a near-perfect day for that time of the year.
💚💚💚 MH spaghetti 🍝, love! Beautiful day in a beautiful state!
It was a great day just to be out there. We were walking in our base layer shirts. Very unusual for February on the coast.
Love it!!
Thanks for providing a great way to vicariously experience the Oregon coast backcountry! I've been away a long time, but you bring it right back. Happy trails.
Absolutely amazing work friend. Shots are simply beautiful and your narration fits perfectly!
Love hikes like these. This would be very close to the Old Toll road.
Yes, we went up Telephone Shack. The next choice would have been Toll Road.
I liked the map at the start
Including the hand drawn arrows?
