As we recover from the pandemic, we have an unprecedented opportunity to invest in strong core public services and build a city that prioritizes the wellbeing of people and the environment: a strong local economy, just and inclusive neighbourhoods, and urgent action on the climate emergency.
I bring over a decade of elected service as your public school trustee and I’ve served as a leader in the non-profit sector helping young people. See my neighbourhood endorsements, read my priorities, or share your suggestions on how we can build better neighbourhoods and a better city for everyone.
Many previous and current candidates may share these priorities or perspectives. What has been missing and will be critical is the political will, experience, and courage to turn them into action. Learn more about me, my experience, and what sets me apart.

Don't line up at the buffet until your plate is empty! It's just common sense asset management, even down to the dinner table.
Why would you hard-code auto-generated captions?
As a Calgarian, I am obliged to say that Edmonton sucks, and I really believe it because of how depressing the city is each time I visit (maybe I should spend more time in Whyte Ave instead of downtown...), but Michael Janz is a bright spot.
Perhaps Edmontonians have also been wondering why the city is so depressing each time you visit? 😉
🤮
Excellent lecture. Shame about your insistence to intersperse your propaganda. (hint, the people who watch this already know)
This is an excellent video and deserves way more views. This essentially combines the ideas and theories I have seen in the videos from all the other urban planning channels.
I love his emphasis on complexity. A lot of people do not understand how complexity works and keep returning to top-down solutions by default, but they just don't work as well.
I dont take public transit and have always drove everywhere. I just bought an e-bike last week and have been exploring the bike paths across tbe city. I am very impressed with what's been built and feel super confident regarding my safety on biking into the city streets (rather than sticking just to the river valley, which is what I thought I would feel safer doing). Im looking forward to saving gas too and using my bike for small trips. I was floored i could get from Clareview to United Cycle just on bike paths and lanes the whole way. Thank you!!
wrong question. how about "how can we get better transportation?" hint: the answer is never going to be found by focusing on cars
Thanks for uploading
I use it in Calgary and it’s one of the main reasons I’ve been able to stay car free for so many years 😊. Used on to go to the Cycling Congress in Edmonton!
Me too! I've even started using it to go on bike rides out of the city. Looking forward to continued growth of Communauto in Alberta, and my home city of Calgary. I also rode the bus up to Edmonton and grabbed a Communauto to go to Elk Island with a friend!
Another great talk by Chuck Marohn, such wisdom and insight, I wish everyone had the chance to hear him speak.
I'd be surprised if I've been closer than 5000 miles of Chuck... but I've heard him! Everyone has the chance with TH-cam but you're 100% right... butlet's ask the right question: How do we get more people to listen to him?
Remove the zoning laws, it only profit the few rich. There's plenty successful city that we can copy, those crooked lobbying is the only one profiting on this zoning laws, the rest of us don't need them anymore.
I recommend you talk to someone who has actually attempted to retrofit commercial into residential. Often the retrofit costs exceed 75% of a fresh build, in order to meet large multi-family housing safety and fire standards. You definitely talked this guy into considering your thoughts, but your first question he answered quite clearly. He said building a new tower or turning one of the older buildings into a tower would make the most sense. This makes sense, he is talking about new builds, retrofitting makes way less sense when the retrofit costs are so high compared to new buildings. You are definitely dreaming of ideas, but the reality is the government doesn’t need to make this happen, you just have to get out of the way and reduce burdens on developers and these will happen in the most efficient and low cost way the fastest. There are professionals already with plans to build new housing but trying to figure out how to make it profitable with the regulatory costs imposed.
Thanks for the suggestions! There are examples of these retrofits already all over town and Ryan does speak to some of them in our conversation. Council has passed some of the most significant zoning bylaw renewals in generations. Hopefully we continue to see several different concurrent approaches to building new housing.
@@michaeljanzyeg The only valuable thing retrofit commercial space could be useful for would be subdivision into small, extremely low-priced maker/artist loft space. There is an almost impossible step from "crafting" and creating in a garage or basement, up to even the smallest commercial or industrial space. A Rona/Revy outlet could be divided with simple walls in concrete block or even drywall to allow flexible sizing, and property tax incentives could allow real estate owners to utilize difficult to lease space through incentivizing many potential new tax paying, job creating entities, or at the least, jobs for artists and crafts people. A city run outlet, similar to "Re-Use Center," would be a good place to allow, encourage a market like permanent selling space for artists, very small makers, and start-ups to find retail sales and exposure. Something like the Butterdome Craft Sale, or the old Army & Navy Building Christmas Craft Market, but, as a city owned/run/low cost (like a social program) permanent basic infrastructure to assist launching and growing new small businesses without the access to and benefit of venture capital and "unlicensed pop-ups" that those who seem to know the right civic insiders and hangers on have access to.
Read Waste Makers. Marketing is producing far more then can be consumed.
The government is producing far more infrastructure than can be used and maintained. Having a market will correct that dangerous excess
Ww2 was massive debt
Over production, and fad investment, mal investments.
I thought alberta was rat free. Why is sewer rat hoffman still here?
private housing is no solution at all
We need more of everything. Absolutely the government needs to step up and fund social housing, help cooperatives get shovels in the ground, etc. but the market doesn't magically disappear. All of these initiatives that the government should take will be cheaper in a healtheir market. If market housing is abundant and affordable, then it's way less expensive for governments to purchase it and repurpose it.
If this is a no brainer then why does Council approve new subdivisions on the outskirts?
Agreed! You might be interested in this video too: th-cam.com/video/XCfr4E04owM/w-d-xo.html
So is sewer rat Hoffman making a public apology now that she has flip flopped and has the same views as the people she called sewer rats?
Danielle Smith is the only one doing anything. The NDP has completely destroyed Edmonton because of your soft on crime policies. Thanks to you and your party I was almost mugged countless times and will be moving out of Edmonton to seek safety.
Well said MJ. Rising rents means more tents
People have fallen through the cracks because our country is falling apart and there’s no hope. Pay people living wages and they’ll be able to live the American dream. Also Symantec’s matter Drug addicts die from overdose not poisoning. Stop enabling folks and stop corporate greed that is robbing people of thier ability to earn a living. Also challenge the right to self determination, if a person is incapacitated then get them help there is no need to ask them when everyone but them can clearly see they need help!
I so wish I could meet the Dr, I have so much to share with him abut my families experience having my children incarcerated. Is there a way to contact him? Petra?

I missed the live, as I was on my way to Mexico! Thank you MSTH for uploading this, with Benjamin Perrin! ❤❤❤
Those relying on the subtitles are now probably very confused and wondering why there are so many psychopaths in the Netherlands 😊
No one cares
James Wilt has serious issues.
Embrace tradition. Bring back walkable people-oriented cities. It will bring us more socially active instead of isolating them in their own overpriced metal boxes.
Remember when back then before 1880s people can go anywhere without the need to drive, and pedestrians had not need to worry about being run over? Pepperidge Farm remembers.
Sorry I missed this talk. I was -- coincidentally enough - called to the Netherlands to attend a funeral. Everything you talked about, I have experienced first-hand in my many trips to NL and my one year living there as a 14 y/o student in 79/80. Even back then, the bicycle infrastructure was far superior to what exists in Edmonton 45 years later --- but there is hope we can finally accomplish something, despite the almost overwhelming opposition to anything that doesn't suit our car culture.
I am glad this has been uploaded! 😊
Sad I missed going IRL but so grateful you recorded and uploaded it! Excellent talk!
Govt needs to stop forcing citizens to subsidize the poor, care for the mentally I’ll and addicted. Build govt housing and open institutions again as if we can not do better for all in this day and age! You keep clobbering citizens with taxes rules and conditions, enough already you’re driving working people out of states and counties across the world. Stop allowing foreigners and foreign companies to own homes stop punishing 1st time homeowners with outrageous unfair competition for loans make them priorities over people who own multiple homes put a limit on how many homes an individual can own don’t let companies Orr llcs own if it really is a human right then do it in favor of families not business
Not a huge fan of Michael at times, but he's dead on with this. Density is important for city solvency, and livability. This needs to be combined with a huge LRT expansion effort, or car dependency will continue to incentivize unsustainable sprawl. Developers should also be paying for LRT expansion to these areas, as it's necessary infrastructure like streets and sewer lines.
In Japan, rail developers ARE real estate developers. It's how rail is paid for, you buy land, connect it with infrastructure, and then sell it for a profit. In North America, we let private corporations take the profits that we feed them with our publically-funded infrastructure! Unfair.

What a narrow minded viewpoint. Why demand tax payers should foot the bill when private industry is ready to step up?
Because Michael Janz is stupid that’s why
This guy sucks 110% of the time
I’m planning to buy a ebike and commute 25km one way. But looks like I’ll have to use the sidewalks mostly because we don’t have enough separated bike lanes. With an ebike I can easily go to work in an hour if there was dedicated lanes. I live in north east and my shop is on west side close to WEM.
😂 ρɾσɱσʂɱ
Really love to see this! Can’t wait for Edmonton to be a city of bikes
