Flutes Being Put Back Into A Flute Shop's Flute Display
During lockdown, we packed up our entire flute display. The emptiness was a sad sight to behold, which is why we're so excited to fill it up again with all of these gorgeous flutes. For us, nothing is as symbolic of starting afresh, as the return of music in our shop.

An Homage to Flutes | L'Arlésienne by Bizet | Flutes & Flutists
มุมมอง 1823 ปีที่แล้ว
Here is a short and sweet homage, paying tribute to all the beautiful flutes that are in our care, waiting to find their new homes. We are grateful to all the Flute Makers in the world for crafting these gorgeous instruments. They have given us Flutists a voice and a wonderful outlet to express our music and it is something that we will always cherish. Bizet's L'Arlésienne performed and recorde...
How to Fix a Bent Headjoint!
มุมมอง 8933 ปีที่แล้ว
February 2nd, 2019: To our horror, this headjoint was brought in to the shop a few days ago. The result of a very unfortunate tumble, the parents thought all hope was lost. Even David and Mark thought there was no going back and was about to pull out our case of headjoints, when Edison Castilho Jr. stepped in and said, "Not so fast. I got this." Featuring the Kuhlau Fantaisie No. 1 performed by...

มุมมอง 1.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Trevor Wye's Instructions: No. 7 [80] - A happy tune. Very little phrasing marks and the usual 2 bars, 2 bars and 4 bars. Don't forget to develop such a simple phrase and try to do something different the second time around! 1st Variation [69] - Dotted notes: these are usually better slightly over dotted rather than under (CPE). The line over the note indicates a light accent, but tenuto, commo...

A simple melody, with infinite potential to push one's expressive capabilities during soft playing, Study No. 6, like so many in this book, prove that Moyse was capable of not just writing countless invaluable exercises, but also some absolutely gorgeous melodies. I always loved that brief moment of hope and bitter sweetness during the Bb Major bars, before returning to mournfulness and despair...

Here is the latest video from our 24 Little Melodic Studies by Marcel Moyse series. Make sure to stick around afterwards for the Outtakes! Trevor Wye's Instructions: No. 5 - A light and happy staccato study! Be sure that the relationship is rhythmically correct between the first and second notes and that the groups do not become a dotted quaver followed by a semi quaver. Once again, phrase clea...
Moyse - 24 Little Melodic Studies: No. 4

Marcel Moyse Mardi! Study No. 4, like many in this book, is deceptively tricky. A very simple but beautiful melody, held together by dotted slurs - one can often play each note either too long, losing the feeling of separation, or too short and risk losing the sense of phrasing. When you find the right balance though, a whole new way of expression is made possible! If you haven’t done so alread...

Marcel Moyse Monday! Here's a nice and chirpy Study to help you start off your week, performed by the lovely Tomomi Matsuo. If you haven’t done so already, be sure to check out Trevor Wye's anecdote and initial notes which you can find under the description in the first video. It will also help you to understand some of the things he was referring to in his instructions below. Trevor Wye: No. 3...

Marcel Moyse Monday! After recording Study No. 1, I quickly realised that for me to do these Studies justice AND put together the actual video, I will need much more time than I currently have. Luckily, my darling wife Tomomi Matsuo offered to step in. Not only is she a brilliant flute player, she is actually the perfect person for the job. Tomomi studied with Trevor Wye for two years and was h...

G'day folks, Mark here. Every few weeks, I am going to record one of the 24 Little Melodic Studies by Marcel Moyse. These simple 'exercises' are beautifully written and deceptively difficult and I can imagine spending the rest of my life trying to master them, so I'll probably have to record them all again in 10 years! I will also attempt to record each one on a different flute, from beginner f...

Mark Taylor Plays the Amadeus AF670 Alto Flute by Wm. S. Haynes Co.

Acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, Mark Taylor recently picked up the beautiful Amadeus AF670 alto flute by Wm. S. Haynes Co. Here's a short video demonstrating the pre-owned Powell Grenadilla Wood Flute we recently received. I don't have a lot of experience playing on wooden flutes so I was pleasantly surprised by just how responsive it was. To get the pianissimo, all I had to do was whisper into it and the flute spoke back to me. The top register is also capable of being brilliant without the veiled quality I origin...
How to Remove a Dent!

For anyone interested in seeing how a dent is removed from a flute, we were recently asked to remove a rather nasty dent on a headjoint. Naturally, Edison took one look at it and said, "Hold my beer" and got to work. Angus was on hand to record the process and provide sound effects.

How da hel do you do staccatos on such low notes that clean???

    • @Mark-Xiao
      @Mark-Xiao หลายเดือนก่อน

Hello! Thanks for your comment. Firstly, this is simply an incredible alto flute, which made things much easier for me. To practice low note articulation, I created a simple little exercise. It’s based on the “a short note is just a shorter version of a long note” philosophy that Vernon Hill, one of my former teachers used to love saying. The idea is that if you can produce a decent long note, then you should be able to transfer that quality over to short notes as well. Of course, the technique required for playing a short note and a long note is not entirely the same, but a major obstacle is the mind, which we can reprogram. Start by playing a bottom E over two beats (at 60 bps, or slower if you wish) then followed by two crotchets/quarter notes of the same E, but tongued (using the double tongued “tu-ku”). The purpose of the longer note is to help establish good tone, and the two shorter ones then need to emulate the quality of the longer note. Repeat this over and over until you are satisfied with the quality of the shorter notes. Next step, play the same low E over two beats, but follow that with a single triplet played across the remaining two beats (using a very slow triple tonguing). Once you are satisfied with the quality, move on to the next step, which is using quavers/8th notes on those last two beats. And after, play triplets on each of the last two beats (still start with the long E). And then semiquavers/16th notes on each of the last beats. Once you are satisfied with the low E, move on to E flat, and then D, and then if you’re really brave, try low C# and C also. It takes time, patience and not being afraid to face frustration (when the notes don’t speak), but you’ll notice an improvement over your low register articulation within a few days.

Hi Mark, yes the 10K Haynes is Rose Gold. The 14K can be either white or rose gold, depending on your preference but the 10K is rose gold. Please feel free to get in touch with us if you would like to arrange a trial: flutesandflutists.com/contact-us/

I really like the design and idea behind these cases. One issue I have is, I have the standard flute case (french style) combination case, that I can carry my flute and piccolo together. I have it configured like many flutists do, so that you can put your piccolo in the case fully assembled. I prefer to not have to disassemble the picc each time I put it in the case. Do you offer or know if this company offers a design that allows you to store the picc assembled?

I played a silver ljd model Haynes in college in the late 90's. Moved on to a 14K Brannen which I currently play, but since Steve Finley joined Haynes, I heard nothing but incredible things. Really makes me want to try one of his beauties!! Gorgeous sound from the 10k!

I had my 14K Brannen made for me in 2006, which the only gold karats they offered was 10K & 14K. They didn't offer higher karats until many years later. Yes, different karats have different sound characteristics, it took me many years to find my perfect 14K head for my flute, which I loved and played for years. Although currently, about a year ago I found an amazing, original JR Lafin, Platinum head with 14K embochure and riser, which is magnificent! Funny, how our tastes change, and like Rampal would say- " The search for the perfect headjoint is like the search for the Holy Grail". If you find one you love, buy it...
