In 1954, the Hoffman's bought 160 acres and developed Chicago's first version of Levit Town. The German farmers in the area saw this as a change to their autonomy and formally incorporated in 1956 as a chess move against the Hoffman development to hamstringing their (Hoffman) ability to annex tracts of land and continue to control their own destiny. Schaumburg, mostly stayed pretty quiet thru the remainder of the 50's electing Bob Atcher mayor in 1959. The 1960's saw that Schaumburg had secured themselves from the forces that drove post WWII 1st generation development till the Woodfield development started in 1968. Most of the original German farmers had aged out/sold out when the Woodfield Mall opened up in late 1971 (for the Christmas season) and the second generation of suburban development began. Schaumburg took a cue from Rolling Meadows to set their fiscal foundation and NOT levy a real estate tax on citizens homes, relying on their share of sales tax from Woodfield and the Auto Mall that sprang up on Golf road (both considerable). Bob Atcher retired in 1975 as mayor.

Elk Grove Village is OK . Mayor Johnson and family has a total lockdown on the Mayor’s office and the hand selected board. Super hard to penetrate. So if you like a family run town. This the place.

I miss…Garibaldi’s, Fireside Roller Rink, Woodfield mall - The Alley, Vie Da France, Lord & Taylor, The Rosemount Horizon, The Rusty Scupper, Farrell’s, Rose Records, The Cookie Factory, Lou Malnotti’s, Poplar Creek, Cuba road trips, Santa’s Village, Moon Lake Village & Old Chicago. It was a cool place to grow up in the 70s & 80s. Aloha!

To the rest of the country Schaumburg is known for it’s beautiful Woodfield mall. I’ve seen videos of it and I am quite impressed.

I loved living in oak brook illinois. The best food and campus of Mcdonalds and hyatt. Shopping for my family and ditkas restaurant, Marriott, movies and easy to get on and off expressways. Oxox Renee O'Neill-Dellaringa-Mcgowan.

there's a small enclave that technically is not part of Chicago, (Unincorporated Norwood Park Township), where John Wayne Gacy lived, on 8215 W. Summerdale Avenue, a small strip east of Cumberland between Foster & Bryn Mawr. I was surprised to discover it on Google Maps.

I lived in Schaumburg for a number of years. I lived near the Schaumburg PD and near Woodfield mall. When we bought our first house, we considered towns such as Schaumburg, Bartlett, Carol Stream and Bloomingdale. Schaumburg‘s homes cost more than in the surrounding towns. Schaumburg Rd has so much traffic, Golf Rd can get heavy but it’s road is wider so it isn’t as bad. Woodfield Mall and the area around Woodfield Mall gets super busy and hectic. Schaumburg is probably most ideal for young adults that like going out doing things, like trying a variety of restaurants and like shopping at the wide variety of stores.

ELK grove Village is very nice top end house prices that are a million and over are way bigger and better then here in the uk. Prices over in ELK grove are way better too 😁

I'm curious. I see a lot of single-family housing in this video. Does Schaumburg have apartments near the Woodfield Mall? Or hotel rooms where you could live near or on the Woodfield Mall?

As a resident of Schaumburg, my only real con for me is - Cook (aka "Crook") county and everything related to it like the mentioned taxes. When the county's offices are located in the country's most corrupt city what do you expect? Otherwise, great schools, low crime, and a good location from Chicago, Indiana, and Wisconsin.

As a young adult in the late 70s, I was a Woodfield Mallrat from Elgin. I had a girlfriend in 1978 who joind me in aimless wandering, record shopping, and dining at Farrell's.

Eddies is better than Schmidts imo I used to live right by lions park as a kid and worked at teams during high school, this is a wonderful way to flashback 6-7 years thank you 🙂

What a mall this once was. Marshall Fields, Lord and Taylor, I Magnin. Saks, Neiman Marcus and then...once upon a time. Bloomingdales. May some of them RIP. We used to drive from Milwaukee to Oakbrook (and Woodfield) to do some power shopping in the 1970's to 1990's. I miss them at Christmastime the most. Some of the best decorations on the planet!

I can only speak of Schaumburg high and campanelli back in the 70s. The teachers were just dopey and stupid they were Southerners that just didn't care

I was a kid in Schaumburg in the 70s. Our mayor was Robert o. atcher one of the first singing cowboys. Predating the Grand Ole Opry , Chicago had the barn dance he was one of the first people to record "you are my sunshine my only sunshine" . The swimming pool next to Jane Addams Junior high School is Atcher

Great tour and even though it was 2 1/2 years ago, it’s so strange seeing everything so empty. We owned three homes in Schaumburg from 1987 to 2020. We downsized to downtown Roselle just before the pandemic started.

We sold our house back in '88 for 225k. This was on the east side of EGV, near the Jr. High. Wish I could afford to move back!

I moved to Schaumburg in 1960 My parents were the first 25 families to move into the”W” section I was 2 at that time We moved away in the spring of 74 A lot changed from 1960. - 1974 and a lot has changed from 1974 till now There was nothing in Schaumburg till WoodField was built Hard to believe Sears is now gone The sad thing It all the tear downs in the “W” section it destroys the look of the neighborhood The new homes look sooo out of place
