Mountain Mariner
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 25 ม.ค. 2021
Hello, my name is Edmund and I live remote in the Talkeetna mountain range, Alaska. I have always had a love of the wilderness, the cold, snow and the seas. I work at sea in Alaska now and return to the mountains after each hitch. I have worked at sea on icebreakers in both Antarctica and the Arctic, but now in Alaskan waters only. Some consider me lucky that I work and live off-the-grid. Guess there is some luck involved, but mostly lots of work and sweat, even at sub zero temperatures. Follow along as I show you a bit of my remote off grid life, interior Alaska style.

Leaving the Mountains | Before The Snow
Unfortunately back to work so it's time to pack things up and shut the cabin down for the cold. Should be back after the transformation from brown to white!

My very basic chainsaw maintenance to keep the remote cabin warm. Winter is now fast upon me, lakes are freezing up and we had our first very light snow on October 9th. Eight inches of snow in the forecast for Monday and Tuesday. That snow will likely stay on the ground until June! Lots of grizzly bear activity near the cabin. Fat and looking very healthy too. Slow progress on the garden. Priorities have moved this project back once again. The shower sauna and workshop are needed more right now. And once those two old structures are torn down I will be building a very much needed woodshed.

Hey Ed, Where did you get your firewood canvas bags?
@@loosewheel5159 Search Amazon: Grillinator Ultimate Firewood Log Carrier.
Love it!! Thanks Ed! Stay safe.Dave 🇬🇧🇬🇧
More videos around Thanksgiving. Thanks for watching.
Have you always lived in Alaska?
@@patriciafisher2838 No. I’ve lived in many places. Won’t be moving ever again though. I’m where I want to be.
@@MountainMariner Certainly can understand why you are happy where you are. Thank you for answering my question.
If you said so I apologize but how long are you going to be gone for?
I’ll be home before Thanksgiving.
thanks Ed, felt like we were going on the trip with you!
Ed, I'm sorry to see you go for a month. Looking forward to seeing the snow videos when you get home. Be safe!
As always, good quality! Winterizing the cabin is always like a new season upon us. Things are different, or that's my feelings. Exciting and yet somber. May we see the next video, and everything is just as you left it! (except for a new sled in the front yard)
I’m hoping all the lakes and creeks are frozen solid and there is around 3 feet of snow or better since that sled needs to come out by trail. This hitch should go by quickly.
Hey Ed, That German lantern is supposed to arrive between October 31st to November 6th 🎉 forgive me for asking.. what are the dimensions of the cabin? Be safe out there.!
@@markmeyer9571 My cabin is 16’ x 26’. And thank you again for the lantern!
Shoudn't say that nasty four letter word "WORK".
Hi! Greetings from finland. What kinda tyres you have in your truck? Are studded ones popular over there or other variants
Hello Finland! My truck tires are studded winter, unknown manufacturer. Studded tires are the most popular here in Alaska.
@@MountainMariner Also noticed that th-cam.com/video/XAHBTyACwFM/w-d-xo.html uses same helicopter service than you!
DD is the excellent pilot and “Blueberry” is the helicopter.
Enjoy your videos from the top of the world
Thanks Brooktrout!
Great footage. Great videos. Thanks for sharing.
I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Ed, will you be away for 1 or 2 months? Just don't want to be concerned if you are MIA. LOL Do enjoy your homestead videos as it is so beautiful there except those darn 🐻 🐻...😟
Hopefully only one month. If a bear ever gets me I won't have a boring death. My headstone will have a cool inscription: "Here lies Ed, a bear mauled him and now he's dead."
@@MountainMariner OMG I hope that never happens. Sure hope the Michells are able to assist in transporting your building supplies. They seem to be good people. Try not to work too hard while away....Be safe..
Happy to see this last video this month! You look well rested! Looking forward to the next video with the SNOW machines! 😀😀
I am looking forward to that too!
How long will you be gone? Hope you will be there for Christmas. It is so beautiful!
I’ll be back before Thanksgiving.
See you in a month. BE SAFE
Hey, Ed, don’t work to hard and try not to be gone so long this time. We check several times a week to see if you’re back and posted something new. Take care of yourself.
Thanks for checking in! It's always nice to know there are people watching!
Always an interesting video. I appreciate the time and effort for this content. Thanks.
Ed, you look so well rested now. Hope your time back to work goes quickly for you and I look forward to seeing you soon. Take care and safe travels
Can't wait to see your new sled! love the light decorations Valdez has up already. Have a good work month and see ya on your way home 🙌
Me too! Should make an excellent work sled.
Hope your tour goes well. See you on the flip side take care.
It would be nice to have a over hang on your porch. Make you an alaska room.
That time home went fast!
It sure did.
The views from the helicopter never get old. Thanks for sharing, Ed.
It never gets old. Leaving for a month does though.
Sad...I wish there where more videos..😮😢
I guess if you can't be on top of a mountain, out at sea is the next best place...especially for the upcoming few weeks. Hope you're only away for a month this time. Cool shirt BTW. Take good care 😊
I hope it’s only a month too.
Ed, Watching that wood get chopped was satisfying. How long did you need to plug that axe in overnight to charge it up?? Ha Other things I noticed.. did you put a playing card on the wind generator?? It DOES make it sound faster..cool! Thanks for making the videos. It shows how to live off grid with confidence and comfort. Im kind of a "City Slicker" myself (remember that 80s movie w Billy Crystal?) .. when Curly said "I can crap bigger n' you".. that spoke to me!.. Btw.. you know how when you swing the axe and miss, and the axe handle hits your shin with full force? I HATE that.. (one of the reasons I opt for natural gas heating) Oh yeah... one other thing.. when the helicopter came in for a landing the theme from M*A*S*H played in the back of my head.. Be careful out in them woods, it can be a warzone! Keep up the good fight and hope all is well up in the great white north..
I need to call you sometime soon! One of these days you should come up for a visit.
Take care at work. Bob in Nevada
Wow you're crazy far away from your cabin. I had a cabin in New Mexico mountains and loved loved ❤being there in the snow!
Hopefully the bears and wolfs are watching out for the cabin while I’m gone.
@ 🤣
You certainly look energized from your home time. Hope the bears behave while you're away! Thank you for sharing that amazing location.👍😎🇨🇦✨️
Feeling recharged during my time off. A month at work will fix that though.
Would an electric fence surrounding the outside of your house work to prevent the destruction and shredding of tarps etc? I know you have it around your deck and that seems to do well. Just wondering.
Fencing is a difficult thing on rock. Doable but at great expense.
@@MountainMariner I can see that as an issue. Aside from the obvious issue of getting it all up there, what about temporary posts like a t-post set in a concrete filled tire? Or maybe 2 t-posts welded in an X as a base and then another welded vertically. That would provide a fairly windproof, light(er) weight solution that you could move. Obviously a bear could push it over but that’s where voltage comes in 😁
@@ScottBalkumThe new workshop will remedy most issues where perimeter fencing won’t be needed.
Love your videos Ed! Stay safe and look forward to the next one. Greetings from Oklahoma
Thank you for watching!
Well, that break went fast. I don't know how you can leave it every couple of weeks. Always good to see you and your videos. Lake water level looks a little low. Stay safe out there. Let's hope it's not 2 months before you make it back.
Time off goes by quickly but I’ll be back sooner than you think!
We've been busy after that hurricane came through. Times flies, Ed. We're around your age, sir. The month will fly by and you'll be helicoptering back into home. We hope to see some great game footage! Take care & God bless! 🇺🇸
@@goingagainstthegrain There should be some good trail cam footage I hope. Hopefully less grizzly bears this next check. They were plentiful this summer.
Great video! Love your work commute. Stay safe and warm.
That is one heck of a commute. And a place worth commuting to (on the way back at least). Safe travels.
Ed, great video, I really enjoyed you showing us how you shut down the cabin. You should make of video of you cooking, I bet you a pro in the kitchen. Be safe on the water and we will see you in a month.
I’m going to do some cooking videos at some point. Thanks for watching.
Be safe. Work is work but dam you got a decent job. See ya when get back. And again be safe.
This was a neat video on the preps you have to do for work as well as winter. Stay safe and God Bless!
Man knows how to split wood. You don't have to swing that maul like a crazed man. Love your video's.
Hello Ed how much are you asking for the Tundra might be interested thank you
@@StevenCerny Shoot me an email and I’ll let you know. I should have gotten the mileage while I was home but I believe it’s around 1700 miles.
Have a safe work trip Ed!looking forward to your return. Love your videos and your home is just in a fantastic spot, cheers.🥰🇨🇦🥰
Thank you! Will do!
Perhaps I might have considered calling in sick - like for the next 3-6 months.
Have a good month. Keep safe
Greetings from Fairbanks Edward absolutely gorgeous set up you have there. When you come x country with your Super Wide Track Keep the large roll over bar attached. A few people have died getting crushed, especially flat light miscalculations or surprises. Stay safe 🙏. Subscribed...
Great video thank you for taking us along while you locked up for your return to work❤️🙏🙂
Glad you enjoyed
That's quite the drive to the office you have there ! Take care 🍀☘
Good thing I only commute to work six times a year. Six times back home too so it’s 12 times a year.
@MountainMariner When l worked l drove 10 to 12 hours a week. Loved where l lived though, retired early! Now on 6 acres, see an occasional plane. I did like my job l had in the city.
Ed always enjoy your routine either leaving the cabin or getting back to the cabin like the OG Omega Man !
Another awesome video :) Yes hate to leave a beautiful spot like that, Suck a peaceful place but safety first 👍, Before you know it you'll be back :) Take care
Thanks so much for sharing!
