DIY Ebike Battery Build
In this video, I show complete instructions on how to build your own lightweight in-frame e-mountain bike battery. The battery is for my CEF50 lightweight carbon ebike (see previous build video here: th-cam.com/video/qUco0eqTtpY/w-d-xo.html) and it shaves 5lbs off the total weight, bringing it down to just under 40lbs! The specs are 36v, 10S2P, 360Wh, 3.7lbs.
Here is a list of the parts and tools I used to build it.
- 20 x Samsung 50E 21700 5000mAh 9.8A Battery cells. I got them from www.18650batterystore.com
- Spot welder s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DkrUQVB
- 10S Battery BMS s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DlxUZ1j
- Heat shrink wrap s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DDWat25
- Grid nickel strips s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DkaAZ9F
- Straight nickel strips s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_Ddb7BPf
This is the wiring diagram for the battery pack: drive.google.com/file/d/1mAqjYRSF6KDm4IX2pbpEjI0Ow3eWZt3I/view?usp=sharing

Why a 36v vs 43v system? Excellent DIY video by the way!
It does look alright, but doesn't a Peloton automatically adjust the resistance for you as you go up & down hills, rather than you having to manually make adjustments?
It's a real shame that none of these DIY frames seem to come with decent cable routing, they all have that headset routed cable crap.
@dualincomenokids4712 how is range with 720wha battery and smaller one? I'm looking for this frame, but I can't decide which battery to get.
3000$ is insane amount to pay for emtb.
Very nice video! Can you share some riding impressions? Range, elevation gain etc. Thanks in advance.
is that fork included in the total price?
It looks like you have to order more than x 1 frame etc ..or maybe im doing it wrong ..will they sell the 1 frame ..Thanks in advance
How does the UI react to the lack of an "official" battery with CANBus? I guess it happily accepts the raw voltage and simply doesn't show all the charge cycle count / cell voltage info? Do you think it would be possible to DIY a range extender? If so, how would you do it? Some kind of manual transfer switch?
thanks for the cool video, cool bike and car!!
Like luxury brands ripping people off, cotton is cotton, steal is steal and glass is glass. People are programmed to just pay more and stay into debt. All these companies in the states use the same factories in China to make the same parts, they are just brand their names on them. My only concern about bike's is the batteries, to make sure you buy good ones and that the chargers are not fault in over charging the batterie's. Other than that, same bikes and price you pay are the actual price the bikes should be selling for in the first place. Very nice bike for sure, man I like the cables I don't like cables passiing via my frame at all, super clean up there. will check it out.
Cool build. I’m not sure I would trust the frame while jumping in a park.
GREAT BUILD,,,🙂👍,,,. IS THE FRAME BUILT FOR THE BAFANG MOTOR ONLY,,,OR CAN A CYC MOTOR BE USED ALSO,,?
30A bms on 20A continuous battery?
Cool bike. Definitely going to regret the budget cassette when it tears up, go with Shimano
I bought a sunny health bike with those same pedals but they don’t have the attachment for cleats, were do I buy just that red insert for the pedals?
Hi, I'm trying to source the chainring spider lockring (that you show in this video). But I can't find it on AliExpress, or anywhere else. I would really appreciate it if you could let me know you got yours from? Thank you Richard
That spider adapter came with my motor. I read that some motors come with one and some have a fixed chainring. Not sure where you can get one if not on Aliexpress. Maybe contact who you ordered your motor from?
Hi. Could you share your design from tinkercad. Thanks
Hi! Is it possible to increase the thickness say to 2mm, for better safety?
It's a real tight fit between the battery and frame. You could probably make the walls 1mm or so thicker but it may require a bit more effort to slide the battery into the frame. But I think since it sits inside the frame, the way the thickness is now should be study/safe enough. But you could try making it thicker
@@dualincomenokids4712 I asked this because my printer shop can't handle thickness below 2mm... that stops me trying to start the project.
@@dualincomenokids4712 I trust your design is sturdy enough / safe.
Excellent build, thanks for sharing! May I know the purpose of the file named "battery case spacer"? It seems not present in your video guide. And again, we all wait for your coming videos about your rides!
That spacer goes on the inside end of the case. This DIY case is shorter than the factory battery so in order to fit the frame mounting holes I had to make this case a bit longer than the batteries themselves
@@dualincomenokids4712I see, how thoughtful!
Excellent ! Very well done in explanation and troubleshooting pedal problems, thank you!
Thank you for this video. Our pedal broke off and I couldn’t figure out how to get the remaining piece out. Your video helped for me to remember that the left hand pedal is screwed in backwards.
I want to do that....Nice job.
Hi. Have you gathered more experience? What can you say about the performance of the engine - would you choose it again? how noisy is it? does the engine cope with occasional stronger climbs of 16-20%? and how does it cope with continuous climbs of 6-16% what range/hill climbs did you manage to cover on the smaller and on the larger battery? By the way, very nice piece you came out with :)
So looking at the costs and spending right so majority of the cost was buying from the frame manufacturer? ($2,400 cad ish before tax?) Did they supply along with frame, motor and battery all the sensor and display that you put on or is that purchased elsewhere?
That frame cost included the battery, motor, sensor and display. Also included was a headset that I didn't use
75Nm is less than half of the BBSHD's 160Nm, although it does weigh more than double the M820. Another way to say it is that the frame is proprietary and worthless without an M820 battery, too, I suspect. If possible, I recommend replacing the cluster with a Rohloff Speedhub IGH. Mid-drives want a straight chain line. I skipped around but didn't hear anything about a battery. That's one of the worst frame geometries I have seen for battery storage. And, yeah, I kinda do resent people who support the CCP using Alibaba. It won't matter for long I suspect, but at the moment it's a dick move.
CCP using Alibaba? Das ist komisch! :-} Sehr komisch.
Can you add a throttle?
Any info on the headset?
Hi, great build, thanks for sharing. Sadly the links are not working for me? Does anyone have the same problem?
Is it possible to add thumb or twist throttle?
Unfortunately with the M820 motor. The M820 is designed as an emtb motor so the focus is more on natural feel torque sensing assist rather than the use of a throttle
Good job, looks great. I have a gravel bike with the older M800 motor and flirting with idea to build a hard tail plus bike with M410 or M510. Although I already have 3 analog mountain bikes and build Ibis Mojo 3 last year. But you can't have too many bikes 😂
did you have any concerns with making payments to aliba and alexpress and it being a scammed seller just looking to take ur money? thats my concern with them,I dont care about the time line to receive items its more about buying from them and losing my money. Please help me deter my thoughts and securities.

Hello. nice bike, and great assembly video. what is the range with a 10s2p battery?
🤤 *PromoSM*
Excellent job. Project turned out magnificent! greetings from Brazil!!
_I have some test ride videos_
_My homemade bafang middrive motor E-bike is only around 40 pounds. I spend around $800 dollars_
Tinkercad has a surprisingly high skill ceiling considering it's a modeling software intended for kids. I've been using it since I got my first printer, nothing has been as intuitive to learn nor as easy to run. Only problem with it is you're limited to Boolean geometry instead of mesh modeling, but I've rarely needed it. Blender works fine for those edge cases
Please know that 3d prints are NOT waterproof. Water will get in between the layerlines and seep trough.
Excellent point... I should have elaborated the point that the seal is water resistant and the case itself will resist splashes but should not be exposed to water if possible. Emtb's in general should not be submerged in water. The battery is somewhat protected from water being inside the frame but water can definitely seep in from the headset and certainly from the motor area. I am conscious not to ride through deep water, use pressure washer to clean the bike etc. I you are more susceptible to these things, this case can be made more water resistant by coating it in epoxy resin etc. to seal up the layer lines. Also I didn't mention it, but the filament used to 3D print should be carefully selected. I used PETG which has better thermal properties but also better water resistance
I've printed plenty of Wee jet boat hulls, They dont leak at all when new.. , however after some time of thashing them they end up leaking, we now seal the hulls with a paint we got from the local paint shop, its like a resin paint, been excellent.
Just remember, when it comes to do-it-yourself rechargeable batteries, if you do a single thing wrong, you could create a very bad situation. Even factory made batteries have been known to catch fire, and they burn with extreme destructive energy. Source: Tesla
Agreed... I am super paranoid when it comes to battery quality and charging. For my build I made sure to use high quality cells from a reputable supplier. I then took a lot of time and triple checked things at all steps of the build. Because of this, I am more confident in the quality of this battery than many commercial offerings (especially cheap stuff of unknown origin). Lithium ion batteries have risks... I take precautions with all my batteries, but there will always be chances of fires etc. as we see in the media
I want that spin bike .i like the shape the curve in that frame looks perfict the shape .it Looks Tight .the red and the grey and the spin wheel
DINK, thanks for this. Would it be possible to share the wire schematic, if you have it, or, a link to where I can find it, please?
I've a added a link in the video description to the wiring diagram for the battery pack
Don't you need vents on the battery case?
My understanding is lithium ion batteries don't need venting. More importantly is the cells need to be spaced so they don't touch and are protected from impacts and water ingress. The OEM battery from this frame is 100% sealed. Also, the BMS I used has a temperature sensor which is attached to the cells and provides overheating shut down. So I think it's a pretty safe design
Very nice. 🍆
Great video, congratulations, beautiful bike. The stickers are self-made?
thank you! I made the stickers myself. Designed them mostly using Inkscape and then had them printed by this company tonatelier.ca/product/uv-dtf-sticker-by-size/. It was super cheap... they are in Canada but I'm sure you can find this type of service anywhere
Great video and appreciate the tour of the Schwin IC4!
I have turbo levo 2019 . Motor Brose 4 times broken. I want ebike with bafang
Finally somebody who actually explains it properly! Thankyou 👍
Were there any problems with the frame? did a service need to be done?
I've had zero issues with the frame. No service was needed but the first thing I did when I received the frame was to remove the pivot bolts and add loctite to them just as an extra bit of security
