Welcome everyone! The name is Alan, a dairy farmer, machinery enthusiast and photography fan living in Co. Cavan Ireland.
I hope to combine my love for my work along with my love for photography and farm machinery and equipment to make a few videos of daily life and all its ups and downs. I hope the standard of my videos improves as time goes as I am fairly new to this crack!!
A simple dairy herd of 54 cows in a spring calving system. A Massey Ferguson man with 3 of them currently on the farm 35, 4355 and 6480.
Photography equipment is a DJI mavic mini drone and a GoPro 10 camera and iphone 12.

STRUGGLING WITH THE COLD SNAP AS THE SLURRY TANKS FILL
January brings its problems too. This time in the form of a very cold spell of weather. In this video we are going to briefly show some of the problems associated with sub zero temperatures on the farm. Also, we have to reshuffle a drop of our slurry

Would you ever consider getting one of these contractors that has one of these separators in to remove the solids
how come your cows are not dry @ this point in the year?
Very dangerous having that young lad driving the tractor you could get squashed between the tractor and agitator just observation
@@JohnMurphy-p9n I wasn’t standing between the tractor and the agitator John. I only put the arms on the agitator after the tractor was stopped and the handbrake applied. Farm safety is the foremost priority in every job that takes place on my farm. Thank you very much for your contribution and feedback.
Good video. Difficult working in the cold weather.
@@briancannon1620 yes it was difficult. We take a lot of stuff for granted
Are you Andrea's brother who owns a TH-cam channel? Sir, I have some rather bold questions 1 Did you graduate from an agricultural university? What is her name? 2Did you borrow money from the bank to buy your farm? 3 How much time does it take you every day to work on this farm? Sir, there is constant isolation while you work alone on the farm daily, weekly and monthlyHow do you personally deal with this problem? Many agricultural content makers do not address this topic. Please answer me frankly Sir, are there laws prohibiting the employment of workers on your farm in Ireland? Sir, how much does it cost to produce a liter of milk on your farm? I am from Algeria. I hope you can answer all these questions for me. Thank you

Always intrigued by slurry operations,do you remove cattle from sheds while agitating often seen videos where a dose of gasses can be fatal(be careful)
@@PatReid-e7k yes I do. This particular agitation with the frost there was no breeze at all. The gas just hovered above the slats. It is very important to evacuate and ventilate before you agitate
Hi Alan, a space heater would a handy job in parlour. Maybe🙏

@@jamesmullane4668 and the very same to yous. Thank you very very much for the support
Yeah I think you’re right but I would consider using sex straws and rear a dozen heifers of your own, surprising where you would keep them they could even follow the cows around. The very best of luck with what you do!
I pray for you and your family to have a wonderful new year.
@@ronaldlucas5360 thank you. And the very same to you
If you buy in replacements you’ll just end up buying TB into your herd then you’ll get locked up and won’t be able to sell your calves. You’re in big trouble then
How did you sort out the bvd I have lost 3to it have blood test a few more don’t know where it came from
@@johnmolloy9158 I never ever had BVD before and always vaccinated for it and was very surprised when I had a case. They came out and vaccinated every female breeding animal twice and blood tested everything. Two more showed up as positive in the bloods and they were shot and as soon as they were gone out of the herd and the two vaccinations done the restrictions were lifted. Very worrying and frustrating time.
You should breeding your one replacments use Ai the first look into sexed semin good idea closed herd with all TB thats around
Thank you for all your videos in 2024. Looking forward to more of the same in 2025

Good idea sell off calfs
Good man keep up vidio happy new year
I’d highly recommend sticking to dairy stock only Alan, keep a closed herd with your own replacements each year. Concentrate solely on breeding, A.I been key there to keep them solids on an upwards trend. I don’t think you’ll regret doing that and it will free up time for off farm work “if needed” and hopefully a decent income at home.
@@IFarmWeFarm cheers Adrian. I appreciate your feedback and I see your point. My herd isn’t closed anyway I bought a few heifers every year. There are pluses and minuses to both sides of the argument. I think wirh the EBI system you will know what your buying. The only thing it won’t tell you about would be slow milkers.
Alan if you can't make a living from 60 cows you've no employees to pay and the price of milk you shouldn't need outside work
Very general statement to make. Everyone’s situation is different. Depends on what loan repayments you have to make, family situation, kids college etc etc.
That’s exactly it. Everyone has their fair share of borrowings and in my case there are 4 children under 13. Feeding and educating them ain’t cheap. I am not crying the poor mouth only no circumstances I am just saying things as they and giving my opinions and outlooks. Thank you for your contribution to the discussion
That is agreat idea to give up the dry stock , the money is in the milk , i cut down the over heads , cut down work , I guarantee you will have more NET PROFIT WITH LES WORK WITH SEXED SEMEN THE COUTRY IS FULL FRESIAN HEIFERS AND YOU CAN BUY HEIFERS AS YOU WANT THEM
Ye work extremely hard for what ye get out of it , No 8 hr day or 5 day weak like most employees of the state
@@DonalHarte if ya love what ya do ya never consider it work. The hours don’t bother me I am used to it.
Happy new year keep up the videos.
@@briancannon1620 thank you Brian and the same to you
I think that your right in your decision to concentrate on your dairy cow's and buy replacements as you need them I'm a small suckler/beef farmer but I used to work out and yes it isn't easy done but I don't know how many cattle I would need to keep to replace that income as much as I like it farming is getting harder and harder every year more rules and regulations and fighting the weather I think it's battle we just can't win but wishing you all the best with whatever you decide to do
@@DeclanMcGrade well said. I totally have the same opinion.
We farm in the north and as far as I'm concerned the government doesn't want us farming at all more interested in birds and butterflies than who supplies the food or where it comes from

Thanks 👍
I started last year what your thinking this year. I used herdford and simmental stock bulls last year on the cows. I kept 30 of them for the summer and got near €800 for some of them when i sold in September. I wont train in heifers anymore. Too much hardship on my own. I extended the milking on my own this winter. Actually going to kells next week for a few parts for it. I do a bit of contracting as well that fits in well with the farm. Make it as easy as you can for yourself. Stay on TH-cam and if not ill email you to keep contact
