2023 XFL Cinematic Highlight - San Antonio Brahmas vs. Seattle Sea Dragons
มุมมอง 521ปีที่แล้ว
I have shot 16 NFL football seasons and 6 collegiate football seasons, but I had never shot an XFL football game. I was invited to shoot the San Antonio Brahmas vs. Seattle Sea Dragons on March 11, 2023. I will breakdown my camera and lens equipment in my next video. Until then, enjoy some of my favorite shots from the game.

There are way too many selfies in this video and I apologize for that. I'm back! Take a trip with me on a brief video recap of my 15th NFL season with NFL Films and why we moved to Washington. Thanks to Cary Edmondson and Eric Jensen for some amazing BTS photos of me in action behind the camera.

Question . Since you use cinema glass for sports , when looking through the viewfinder do you use peaking throughout the action to nail focus ? Or what do you do for peak action? (Not stationary subjects)
The Arri cameras have really great peaking features. They have a peaking setting called “aperture” vs. color. I usually set my peaking strength to 9 under the aperture setting.
Dom, how is your back with shooting with the amira handheld/shoulder day in and out? thanks!
so far so good. I don't tend to shoot for multiple days in a row. During football season, I get a week between games to recover.
Great video what camera did you use to record this video? Looks really good!
I use a Sony FX3 for these TH-cam videos
alexa mini with 7900 hrs for $13k or Amira with about the lets say same amount of hours for $9500?? love to get your feed back
That sounds about right. The Alexa mini has more features than the Amira. The biggest being the ability to shoot Anamorphic. The Amira is the cheaper, more documentary friendly little brother. 7900 hours is a lot. Arri offers a couple paid options to verify the cameras before you purchase. For example If a sensor needs to be replaced that will cost you $10,000+. I’d always recommend having Arri look over any used camera I want to buy.
What was the lens support bracket you were using? I saw it was on the 19mm rods, do you think that 15mm rods used on a Arri WPA-1 could work?
That’s the 19mm Wooden Camera support. I think this lens is too heavy to be supported by a 15mm setup
Hey dom ! I’m another video you mentioned that the Fujinon 85-300 can be used with an extender . Can you tell me which extender is that exactly ? I can’t find it listed on B&H
We use a PL to PL 2x extender made by iB/e optics.
Will you be making a video about the new Fujinon Duvo 24-300mm ? I saw that you gave it a try recently . Would love To know your thoughts about it
At some point, yes. It’s a really great sports lens
Hey Dom! Have you see new release from DJI? The DJI Focus Pro ? If so, would love your thoughts for filming sports! Seems great if you are shooting a single person but not sure on an complex scene like sports and football
Im going to check it out at NAB.
What is that attachment piece that you added to the Amira’s side LCD screen and dials? Thanks!
It's called Ninja Armor. It comes in a couple pieces designed to protect the Amira's vulnerable high wear areas. My friend Brent in AZ created it. Sadly Ninja Armor has been discontinued.
@@DomTheDPthanks for letting me know!
Hey Dom. I shoot a lot of sports/sports doc work, as well. I replaced the production handle and VF arm with the lightweight handle(LCH-1), the UAP-3 top plate, the LWS-6 15mm rod holder and run the VF like I do on my Amira with the MVB-1 on a set of 6" rods. Allows me to push the 35 all the way to the back of the shoulder mount to balance out with my 17-120 and 25-250 and push the VF far enough forward to be in the right spot. And as a bonus it looks and feels like a much cleaner build vs. with the production handle and "double dog bone" VF arm. When I reached out to my dealer to order the pieces(after only having the camera for maybe a day), they said they had several people doing the same thing, because they didn't like the VF arm, either.
I am now doing a similar setup with the top rods and MVB-1 pushed forward. I think the lightweight handle is in my future too. This rig gets heavy quick.
@@DomTheDP Yep. She is deceptively heavy.
Is this $100K setup yours or the NFL's? o_0
This one is mine.
Could you tell me where you bought this camera???
Yes from one of my West Coast Arri reps, Chase Hagen. He is based out of the Burbank, CA office. www.arri.com/en/contact/contact-form
@@DomTheDP Thank you so much!
Wowowowowowow
But I’m mostly just here for the ASMR
👍🏾😎
Nice
Soo sick dom!!
Wow congrats! It’s a beauty
Congrats, Dom. Once it's all batteried up, about how heavy is the rig with your lenses?
I would assume around 20lbs.
Congrats!
Thanks!
And my gear envy continues to grow. Can't wait to see what you do with this beaut!
More to come!
Oh man Dom Congrats!!! Such a beautiful cinema camera. I’m really thinking about selling my red and getting an Arri. Now that Nikon bought Red. Can’t see Red lasting very long. This is Troy lol
❤️🙌🏻
baller ⛹🏻♂️
RED is better .
To each their own
Congrats Dom! Enjoy the camera, can't wait to see what you do with it!
Thanks! Your Arri Academy tutorials on TH-cam were a huge help prior to me unboxing my camera
Some day maybe I can afford to buy this beauty and experience its incredible capabilities firsthand.
Looks great! 😍
Thank you! 😊
Dude just bought a G-Wagon of a camera
that intro though!!!! 🔥
Thanks!
Clicked the video just because I saw the Fresno State hat lol
Go ‘Dogs!

Love to see a new upload!
Working hard to get more uploaded
I am so stoked to see some sports footage from the 35!
Soon
You’re not the only one!
Enjoy your Alexa 35, it is by far the greatest camera I have used (and own). It will not disappoint you. What batteries are you getting? I went with Bebob (solid performers).
Thanks! Beebo 155’s for now.
Cant wait to see the footage so excited for you!!!
thanks!
Congrats Dom! The new sensor in the 35 is just beautiful 🤤
Thanks Jordan!
I remember you telling me about this months ago!!! Super excited for you man!
I can't wait to see the footage coming from this thing! Congrats Dom. What's the plan with the Amira?
B cam for now. May sell the Amira in the future.
congrats on the upgrade 👏
Thanks!
A great investment! Enjoy your new toolset! 👍🏾🙏🏾 🏴🇸🇪🇹🇹
boy thats a pricey upgrade!
You got it! Nice!
Can I just sit in the corner and listen live??
let's make it happen
Two lenses and a battery. Simple.
I am grasping at ur gr8ness!
Nothing beats reps... love the work ethic Dom... always grinding!
Love the play by play, and welcome back ☀
Good comparison of using both options. Its good that you make these videos as its really hard to find professional user experiences with 2/3 and long primes for video.
Thanks!
Do you have a link to the ENG zoom lens that you use? I am hoping I can find an ENG lens that will work with my Sony FX6
I'm not Dom, but know a bunch about 2/3 lenses. You won't find one that will easily work on a FX6. The reason is that the FX6 only shoots full frame and doesn't shoot in S35 or S16 which are the formats existing adapters are designed to work with. To make a 2/3 lens work on full frame you would need approx a 3.6x teleconverter and optical corrector. It is way easier and cheaper to just use a camera like an FS5, FS7 or FX9, BMMC which have S16 and/or S35 modes and an existing adapter to suit.
@@jamesandcamera Thanks the info! That helps a lot.
@@firsttolast no worries 🙂✌️ it's not the easiest topic to find info on.
Hey Dom good video as usual just a quick question, what are the best two zooms you’d recommend for a person to have? (don’t pay attention to budget) .
For football the Fujinon 24x is the best all around zoom lens. You will need to adapt the 2/3” lens to any Super 35 camera
