Get rid of the electro couplers, they are junk, put in a Blunami decoder with a bridge rectifier, get some 2 rail pilots and put in Kadee 805 couplers, they will work with the O gauge couplers and you won't have the electronic headaches that go with all that excess gimmicky stuff!
I already ordered the electrocouplers for it. Some day, I may convert my fleet to 3 rail scale, but I need to figure out what kind of turns I'm going to have on my layout first. Obviously 2 rail pilots and kadees look great, but it's a lot of work for something that wouldn't allow me to remote throw couplers and would limit the turn radius on the locomotive. As for blunami, why spend the over $200 when the current sounds and control systems work just fine? I don't have the money to spend on that right now, but if the electronics fail, I'll for sure be putting blunami in it. Overall, someday I'll do everything you suggested, but not any time soon. I do appreciate the suggestion, though! Thanks!
I wish I could get my RS1 to smoke like that. And sound like that. But, in HO scale it's just not going to happen! BTW, that guy goes on the other side. RS1s all ran long hood forward. The engineer is always on the Right hand side. The side with two windows.
@FHollis-gw4cc you could probably get some great sounds with a LokSound decoder from ESU assuming you can figure out how to fit it in. These engines are tight on space in any scale! There already was a figure on the engineers side. Most of scale models have a figure on both sides of the cab. The engine seemed to be holding strong, but the conductor/fireman (I'm not sure what they would have been called back then) kept falling out. Thanks for watching!
I have a similar Great Northern RS-1. It was from early 2000s NIB. The trucks were frozen soild with the original dried grease. I didn't have any instructions or schematics. I have worked on a lot of 0-scale models. This, without a doubt, was the biggest PITA I've ever worked on. It is a very nice model, though. However, I am not looking forward to ever doing a thorough servicing again. This model might be a good candidate for Blunami.
@DRCRailroard Yeah, getting the trucks separated from the motor is not a simple task, and getting it back together is even harder! But I agree with you on them being beautiful models! I'm going to have to take it apart one more time to put in the electro couplers and I'm not looking forward to it. It's great to hear it's not just me who struggles. I also thought this would be a great candidate for blunami, but all the stock electronics seem to work so I think I'll save the $200+ and just keep the EOB. But if anything ever fails, you know I'm putting Blunami in it. Haha! Thanks for watching!
PS2 is battery ran. Replace that thing with a BCS socket plug is to charge the thing.
@wolfen216 it's already had the battery swapped with what I thought was a capacitor bank. But whatever it is, it doesn't use the battery anymore. And thank you for the info on the plug!
My guess is poor quality control from the factory. Curious where it was manufactured. Kudo for the cat cameo!
I have the 1951 version of the 2035 I like the 1951 version better than the 1950 version of the 2035 because the axle bearings in my 1951 2035 steamer are easier to aquire and replace than those axle bearings in the 1950 version of the 2035 steamer, plus these axle bearings were also used in all of Lionel other big Hudson type steamers both the Sante Fe type and the Alco type in both the Postwar era and MPC era, resulting in these axle bearings being more plentiful. I hope that this helps you and as always Happy Railroading!!! MPC Matt.
@MatthewJoseph-td5qc great to know! I'll have to take a look next time I'm servicing it
I have the same engine. I know they are a real pita to open up. I’ll be converting mine to PS3. That EOB is a real tight fit
@@superwarp12 It sure is! I was debating converting this to Blunami if I couldn't get these electronics to work. But both Blunami and PS3 would make it way easier to work on.

C.W. the brushplate with the big Lionel and the capacitors is the newer motor. The older motor is the one with the MPC brushplate but I believe that the older MPC motor has not been used and is most likely brand new. The newer motor with the big Lionel on the brushplate is the one that has been used and maybe have been a later Lionel LTI motor. I hope that this helps. Sincerely MPC Matt.
@@MatthewJoseph-td5qc that's great to know! Thank you!
You're Very Welcome C.W.!!! MPC Matt.
Well it's an alco. They never seemed to figure out that diesel aren't sopost to smoke like a steamer.
@CSXrailfan814 Haha! It was all that steam era knowledge they had. They couldn't break free of it. But hey, at least they performed better than Baldwins of the same era.
Love Lionel, but I'm done paying 2k for locos

Beautiful standard gauge sets.
@@keithwood638 thank you!
What are those things under the wheels are they pickup rollers?
@deshaunstrains9962 on the front and the back, they are just supporting blocks to keep the trucks from hitting the center rail. Under the driving wheels are rollers that allow the train to stay in place while in motion (if that makes sense). The rollers have a bar on them to contact the center pickup roller on the locomotive, but I found the placement of the pickup rollers to be inconsistent between manufacturers. So I built my test stand to have a center rail all the way along the top. I hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful engine, just wished they used the movie whistle :/
@SarcasticBroth I know right? It has a custom sound card for the movie dialog anyway. But the whistle is has is very nice.
Is it just me, or is it producing a lot less smoke than before? Great video anyways.
@1471SirFrederickBanbury It's not just you. I didn't add nearly as much smoke as before. The smoke unit intermittently shorts now, and I'm trying to prolong its life as much as I can since it's something like $70 to buy a replacement. When I do get a new one I'll record a real smoke show before the old one inevitably kills itself.
@@cwhall01 Considering how simple smoke units are, being composed of basically just a resistor and fan, you may be able to find and replace the shorting component, and maybe even get weaker resistors, which would increase the output. I wonder how Lionel could possibly get away with such a high price?
@1471SirFrederickBanbury this is a dual chamber smoke unit that runs the whistle steam and the main smoke. It's also a "smart" smoke unit (whatever that means). So it has some chips and sometimes thermistors in it which drives up the price. I miss the days of the resistor and a fan. Changing the resistor does sound really cool! It would be fun to experiment with different resistances to see how it changes the output. Thanks for the suggestion!
@@cwhall01 I know on TH-cam, Qora01m made his own smoke unit thats the best I've ever seen from basic resistors and a fan. I do plan also to experiment with tiny fog fluid thats used by the film industry, as that should be much better than the oil based smoke fluids that most people use. it would also leave no residue being water based.
@1471SirFrederickBanbury oh that sounds fantastic! Thank you for the suggestion, and let me know how your experiment goes!
as much as i love g scale for christmas, i still feel like it was a missed opportunity not to pull out some standard gauge
@xarq0n maybe next year. I've got another video on my channel that shows my lionel tinplate display.
Your locomotive trubbles seems like karma for killing my G scale. Got some meterials to rebuild it. Hopefully in a week or 2 it will live again.
@@CSXrailfan814 Can't wait to see it! I'll keep my blue comet on a leash next time. Haha!
@cwhall01 You better! It's gonna be a lot of therapy before my loco feels safe leaving the house. Who's gonna pay for that! Therapy for model trains ain't cheep!
Nice and hefty layout. 2/10 would not hold as you put the legs on again.
I'm definitely not bringing this in one piece anywhere again. Haha! I'll likely cut it into quarters, but that's going to need a full redesign. Thank you for your help during setup!

Lionel should produce a Vision Line T1
@@danieldoesdumbstuff I agree! I think they are due to reissue the T1. It would be awesome to see it with cylinder, safety valve, whistle, and maybe dynamo steam. We'll keep our fingers crossed!
friction bearing is actually a term that Timkin came up with to sell their bearings. They're proper name is plain bearing. because its plain and just oil and rags.
@wolfen216 good to know! Thank you for the clearification!
Nice work on the locomotive. I'm not sure if this would make a difference, but did you consider putting the plastic metal on the other side of the louvres? Maybe it will shrink in the other direction. Just a thought.
@luvindemtrains Great suggestions! I didn't think of that. Next time I do some gaps like they I'll give that a try.
@@cwhall01 Sometimes my common sense kicks in, lol. It might be worth a try.
How did you get the circuit board for the tender. Do I need to call a dealer or something else 🤔
@andrewaugustyniak2765 You have a couple options. For the sounds, if you want to do exactly what I did in the T1, you'd have to call some parts dealers to see if they have a powered mother board and a railsounds 4.0 or 4E board. Since Lionel no longer sells them on their website, they have gotten very hard to find. The motor controller and radio reciever boards you can get from Electric Railroad / Sunset 3rd Rail. Just keep in mind that if you have the original AC motor in the engine, you can't use the Cruise Commander, you'll have to use the AC commander. If you have upgraded it with a DC can motor, you can use the Cruise Commander. Electric Railroad also sells RailSounds Commander kits. These are the easiest way to put new sounds in these engines and it's plug and play as long as you have the harness to connect the RailSounds Commander to the Cruise/AC Commander (ERR sells this too). Their sound options are limited for steam but guaranteed to work. Sorry for the long reply, but hopefully this answered your question. Thanks!
@cwhall01 Yes the information that you sent me makes sense thank you Railroad fan!!
Sounds very nice. Merry Christmas 🎄
I know this video is 3 years old I just purchased a T1 6-18006 brand new and taking out the j 1 jumper wire worked. Awesome young man. I hope you are having a great holiday season.
@andrewaugustyniak2765 That's great! The two chuffs per rev makes the engine so much better, in my opinion. Thank you for the kind wishes and happy holidays!
Great project log! It's nice to see everything being laid out step by step and to watch it evolve over time, as well as adding the various road specific details (I would've totally missed the horns being embedded in the ends). Also nice to see a member of the O gauge club in the wild, I'm a member of the HO club lol
@ROKMAN1445 Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed! And that's awesome that you're in the HO club! I love your layout and everyone I've met in your club seems great! if I ever get back into HO, I may see if I can participate in both.
Update: We were able to test this locomotive on a larger transformer finally, and it ran smooth as silk! I guess I just need a bigger transformer or at least a CW-80 that hasn't been abused for over 10 years.
I have been repairing lionels for 45 years and always use a 275 zw on my work bench that 80 watt is good for powering lights on a layout
@kensbackshop6399 very nice! I've only been at this for about 10 years or so now. I agree, an 80W transformer is definitely not cut out for the kind of work I'm using it for. When I get some money I'm definitely going to upgrade since my CW-80 is on its way out. I just don't want to pull out my ZW since it's way too big for my little desk.
The reason those middle wheels on the power trucks do not have flanges is because they need to be that way so that they can navigate the O-31 radius curves and O-31 switches that Lionel came out with I believe in Lionel's early Postwar years. I hope that this helps you C.W. and as always Happy Railroading!!!!
C.W. My mistake I meant the rear flangeless wheels not the middle ones. Oh by the way can you show a video on how to take apart that 6 wheel truck and replace all the gears and what the part numbers are?? Sincerely MPC Matt.

@zavala90011 if i wanted to do it correctly, I would have tried soldering the new plate to the frame. But instead, I tried using gorilla glue, and it honestly worked really well. Just make sure to scuff the mating surfaces with some kind of sand paper or scotch bright pad so it glue has something to bite into. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching!

Those RS5 Sounds are awesome, The Horn and Whistle Files are Better the LRS .
The tender's air inlet is the circular hole where the impeller spins. This is a centrifugal blower. Both the top and bottom outlets create the whistle sound. I suspect that each may be tuned to a slightly different note, but I've not tested that theory.
