My Moon Challenge Attempt - Astro Photo Challenge
This challenge from my book The Cosmic Field Guide is designed to help beginners capture a simple shot of the Moon. But for this video, I'm raising the stakes! I'll be planning and executing a unique shot of the Moon rising over the city skyline, blending nature and urban life. I'll take you through the entire process, from scouting locations and timing the perfect shot to what happens after-compositing and processing the image back at home. If you've ever wanted to take your Moon photography to the next level, this video will guide you through it step by step.

Hello! Does your book teaches "how to do astronomy stuff", to complete begginers? Thank you!
It dose. The Challenge section has challenges from complete novice to expert level challenges. And if you wait a few hours the black Friday deal will be live too ;)
Even in daytime when shooting with my DJI Air 2S drone I often employ HDR stack photography for better dynamic range, especially if shooting in direction of the sun on a clear day. Thankfully most of the modern photo editing software offers an ability to automate HDR stacks with artifact removal, so you save a load of time from having to manually merge the single frames. And many allow you to fine-tweak the stack afterwards should you need it.
Very cool video! Please get back to Elite Dangerous. 🫡 Now go out there, and get lookin' up!!!!
I'm really surprised to hear you talking about focusing. I would have thought you could just set it to infinity because of tbe distances we're talking.
You teknically can. But telescopes don't have infinite markers like normal camera lenses and you focus point also changes based on filter and temperature. The auto focuser i use have a a small temperature prove so it can start new auto focus rutine if the ambient temperature changes more than a set number of degrees
@@cosmic_curiosity Thank you
There aren't ways to "reset" the car timeouts? Like activating 5 cm of forward, brake or something? Or software to do... could you keep the car in the state you want by using a scanner like mechanics do and that would keep the car as you want. Although such a scanner would be pricey I bet if not nearly impossible to buy from reputable sources.

wait. you stream elite dangerous don't you.......d2ea
I used to, yes. But I wanted to try something new. :)
I also bought one of those anker portable battery things labeled as a generator when its just a fsncy battery and i use it a lot for drone and go pro charging when im out
I was looking at something like that too, but i ended up just using the main battery in my car.
Wow i literally plug into the wall at home, I guess it must be nice to not live in a city.
Yeah for astronomy stuff the city is not a great palace to live, but there are other advantages :-)
Would you not add 1/3 of the filter thickness to the back focus ?
I’m looking for one that is small because we travel I want it tor looking at planets and stars.
I would look at a small refractor. They are compact and great for travle. But you might struggle to get enough focallength to see planets clearly. So you might want to invest in a Barlow lense as well
That was s good tutorial. Keep them coming!
Thank you. I absolutely will :)

Backfocus ONLY applies when a flattener/coma corrector is used and is the distance where the flat plane is projected. If you don't use a flattener / coma corrector there is no such thing as back focus. As such it's a bit of a misnomer - it would be clearer if it was called "flat plane distance"
What about the use of thin-spacer rings for camera orientation adjustment such as with your filter wheel.... The spacer ring would be placed between the camera and filter wheel back-side... I assume it still counts towards backfocus since you often adding 0.3mm, 0.8mm, 1mm ... I ran into this issue using my ASI533 and EFW to orient my camera strait with the EFW.
Yeah that would count too. Everything that changes the distance between the camera and the telescope counts.
Must be nice to have a EV car, tax payer subsidised ?
Whats the car ?
Hyundai Ioniq 5
Those are great ideas and recommendations for gear. I didn't catch which car that is. Is it only available in Europe? Thank you!
It's a Ioniq 5. You can get it in most of the world. I think is a lot of the Kia EVs have th V2L system too
Astro is going mobile! What a nice sunroof planetarium! Thank you very much, have a great day!
Since this video was recorded i have spent a few night with it and trust me. Sitting in a warm car watch the stars while you telescope is working away outside and you favorite show is on the tablet... that's a pretty good evening in my mind
That’s how to do it 👍
That's cool. Love the mobile operations center vibes.
i know right. i'm very happy with the way it turned out
I always enjoy your content. Great to see you Astro! :)
Thanks. I really enjoy making it too :-)
Love the concept, really cool.
Thank you. I'm very happy with it too
Looking forward to seeing the results.
That's impressive! Keep an eye on the Pleiades for all of us.
I will. I have a project with a super nova remnant I need to finish first. Then I'll check for thargoids
Such expensive gear on such an inexpensive mount... I think you'll upgrade the mount soon, but who am I to say that? Oh yes power supply first!
Trust me i am looking for a better mount. I'm just waiting for one to be put up on facebook marketplace close to me lol. However i am a bit torn on what to go for. I have been looking at the HEQ-5 Pro or the EQ-6, But since i will be moving it around a lot i did consider the AM3 or AM5 from ZWO. That lower weight and the ability to use it with or without counter wrights is very appealing
@@cosmic_curiosity Don't go for the HEQ-5 Pro, I started with this mount and ended up with a broken puc (the clamp holding the prism rail) and the leg on the front on the front of the mount started to move beyond the designated end position and I had to secure it with chains. I would consider the EQ6-R Pro for the improvements.
Yeah the EQ6-R looks amazing but it's heavy! and a bit overkill for the OTAs i have
You are correct! "Znamya-1" was an on-earth deployed 1:1 model of the mirror to test the unfolding mechanics concept and electronics.
I absolutely love watching your channels-both the real-life space content and the sci-fi gaming! I grew up in a NASA family; my grandfather worked there from the NACA days all the way through the start of the Space Shuttle program in the early '80s before he moved to the private sector. Keep up the awesome work, and never lose that sense of curiosity!
Just don't ask him about gender LOL
B. O. B. Is as much as a rapper as earth is flat.
Love the look of the channel and the videos. It all looks very professional and you clearly know your stuff. Have you thought about doing interviews with other well known space experts in the field? I would love to hear you in conversation with other astronomers, scientists and even astronauts!
That is absolutely something i want to do yeah
@cosmic_curiosity I think that would be awesome and good for the channel. It looks really slick, you've done a great job actually. You deserve to do well from it.
Interesting. Thanks for the Explanation!
