Best Knife For Backpacking: Gerber Dime and Swiss Army Classic
I just compared the Nemo Moonlight and the Moonlight Elite today and had to go with the Moonlight. Just felt a LOT more comfortable and added 6oz just didn't matter to me. I'm getting the Helinox Chair Zero Highback and the Big Agnes Skyline UL and will decide between all 3.
Bubbles?
Really good video 💯
Why did I watch this five times? The end/beginning is just that good.
I have a brand new katadyn be free never used and air goes through (dry) Have a brand new sawyer squeeze never used and air goes through (dry) And I have a life straw that has been used and is wet but that does not pass air. I think dry/wet makes a difference in this evaluation
Wet the katadyn because it has hydrophobic membrane so it needs to be wet in order to expand to the proper micron. When I made the video I had forgotten to say that. If it then allows air through then it has a problem.
@@BackpackingGearNut appreciate it man. You got a follow, appreciate the content
@@FirstStatePrepperDadthank you
Thank you! Super informative. I’m super fussy about fabrics and cannot stand polyester against my face. Too hot and sweaty. The Nemo Fillo microfleece is the only fabric that has ever felt comfortable. How does the ZenBivy fabric compare to the Nemo microfleece?
The Nemo microfleece is nice and soft, but the foam rubber or plastic, depending on which pillow you get, is very hot on my head. Which is nice when it’s really cold but not anything above 40°F, and it makes me sweat and is uncomfortable for me when it’s hot. I like the feel of the ZenBivy pillowcase. It’s soft in a different way, but it is breathable and doesn’t make my ear. Feel weird. Also, the way I put the pillow together. It’s either got the down pillow topper or if I’m going ultralight I may use one of my jackets so I’m able to mitigate the sweat.
Such a clear explanation! I feel like I understand the product so much better now. Thanks for sharing!
My pleasure!
Nice review!!!
Thanks

Yeah, I kind of misspoke didn’t I?😂
What a great review 🎉 was thinking of getting the nemo hornet, you have convinced me this is the tent for me! Thank you 😂😂

👍🏻
By far the quickest , cheapest , and essential hack for every backpacker. Many Thanks .
My pleasure
I had a horrible experience with outdoor vitals. Their gear is great but if you need to return something they are the worst. They will inspect your return and if it’s not in new unused condition they will deduct 20% from your refund. Now this seems fair but my return has a pulled thread in the hood that there is no way I could have caused and they wouldn’t give me the benefit of the doubt and took 20% of the top. I tried reasoning with them to no avail. They give cottage industry proprietors a bad name. Beware. Not a hater just telling the truth.
Sorry to hear you had that experience. I used their gear for a long time before they even knew who I was and have had good experience returning things but the last time I return something was now over two years ago. Thank you for the comment. I hope you enjoy my videos!
use the flextail zero with it?
That’s exactly what I do. But when I review a Matt, I tried to review it based on what they provide so that people know what they’re getting. The flextale gear zero pump is fantastic.
Great summary. I have both (among dozens of others), the Vic Classic was a favorite of the late Colin Fletcher. It's one of the better balanced items for backpacking, being lightweight *and* cheap. There's easily a hundred other handles if you don't want the basic red.
That is true! They make a lot of other knives that are different sizes and weights. This one I find to be the best for me.
gram weenies vs comfort and a good night sleep.....Guess what? Get rid of that half a pound around your waist and voila!
That's a dream sleeping bag.
I definitely like it a lot!
@BackpackingGearNut Give it to me...or else...or else I will have to save for a long time...yeah
I've no idea how you fit into this and consider it comfortable. Im 6'1 and 235 pounds and everything about this chair is too small and ultimately, it's painful to sit in. Poles digging into your back and arm pits, ends poking into your legs. otherwise its fantastic but this weight saving obsession has gone too far if the usability just isn't there. My tiny daughter is delighted however as she's just been gifted this chair as it's utterly useless to me. It's way too low and narrow. Superb build and materials but if your anything above an average size buy this product at your peril.
I have quite a few different chairs. I have found no perfect chair for me. Everything‘s a give-and-take if you’re talking about lightweight for backpacking. I find that all the lightweight backpacking chairs that are under 1.5 pounds or two load of the ground. I’m just used to it, but it’s not for everybody. I haven’t had any issues with the bars in my legs and I have figured out how to deal with the bars in my back so that it works for me. My very favorite thing about this chair is it doesn’t sink in the ground because of the ground cloth. I also like its materials and construction and feel like I can count on it.
there's nothing like parting with hard earned to sharpen your objectivity
👍🏻
Did you get one?
@@tom-n8y1u no, I was making the comment that he didn't pay for it. which kind of compromises the review. but then, that's youtubers
@@haydenwalton2766 fair statement mate haha
hey, I've always been able to use an extremely light pump sack, because i just use a thin garbage bag. Pick a big size bag, I think 40 - 60L is fine, scoop it full of air, close it at the top. Using your hand you can hold the opening closed, and grip around the inflating nozzle. I do this for my nemo pad, works better than an inflation bag imo because it's so much more volume, once you have the technique down. Just don't squeeze too hard, the thin bag will pop if you're not gentle. Used the same bag for my pack liner for 40 days, dual use is weight saving, not that the bag weighs anything, replace it at any supermarket.
That’s an interesting idea! I might have to play with that and see how it goes for me.
Thank you! Appreciate your thoughts on this quilt.
My pleasure!
Gram, please
I’m trying to get better about that.👍🏻
I have the Spark Sp0, might just pick one of these up as well... the Sp0 is a bit tight for my liking.
While it sorta sounds counterintuitive due to its open caged design, I find that the BeFree clogs/slows quite a bit quicker than the other cartridge style alternatives when it comes to silty water that we often find here in the southwest. Pre-filtering can help, but I still end up with cloudy/brown water in the bag. Not sure why this is, but I know others have noticed this as well.
Could you use the tabletop as a tray (without the legs… i.e., put it across chair arms)?
No, the lake structure is what makes it rigid.
Is this the regular size or the larger one?
My pillow is the regular size
Good idea but ahuving a whole jacket in too - isn't this going to stretch the buff to the size of a large hipbelt? Asking because my buffs are already kind of loose, hanging more like a necklace, to the point they don't really insulate my neck very well. Maybe they can be used for this instead.
The bus that I have has never gotten stretched out from it. I can’t claim at all brands wouldn’t get stretched out, but mine didn’t.
Many thanks! I just bought one and the pump sac is now just a plastic bag, weighing only a few grams. So maybe they watched this video ;)
Thank you for your comments! I hope I was able to help in a positive way!
Came in to say the same. The new pump sack weighs almost nothing
Did you provide the total weight of the Lifestraw WITH the syringe? Would it be even more than 3.9 oz? You didn't compare the flow rate of either. BeFree is known to have one of the fastest flow rates for drinking ??? 🤷♂
Sorry for the slow response I didn’t provide the total weight with the syringe because I don’t carry it. I backflush with clean water from the clean bottle and that works well for me. It’s not the perfect solution for everybody but you know we all figure out what works best for us.
Thanks for the demonstration and info. You also gave me a great sense of scale-truly a tabletop table.
It’s a great item! I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
Can't seem to find any NSF certification for labeling as a purifier.
"Viruses in the United states isn't a big deal" H5N1 entered the chat.
That is true.
Cash was mad dogging that steak! 😂😂😂
He sure was😀
Sea to summit makes great products !!
Whats the weight capacity on those things?
@@chef.papa.6tango523 I did some research and I cannot find a weight limit. But if it helps, I am a big guy that weighs 255 pounds. I have never had an issue with it. It’s very durable.
Why do you need a filter when camping😂
It depends on where you camp. If you’re car camping and you go to a place that has potable water or you bring all of your water. You don’t need one. If you have a smaller vehicle and don’t have the space to carry enough water and you go to a place that doesn’t provide potable water, a filter is a great way to make sure that you have access to water. I mostly use them when I am backpacking.
For me it looks perfect to take family camping. Been using a sawyer with a big bladder and hanging it so this other option sounds way better!
The Sawyer doesn’t have a charcoal filter in it so this filter Would help you eliminate any bad taste. I usually filter out of streams when I can so that I can get the cleanest and best tasting water when I carry the Sawyer. But as you could see in the video, there are certain parts of California that don’t have a lot of water and sometimes you just have to thank God for the puddle that you just found And filter that. I’m also testing several other filters. It’s the nature of the channel for me to keep trying new products. Thank you for watching! I hope you enjoy the content!
Seeing a lot of reviews on the pump failing after 5 or so uses. I myself have been using the first need water filter for 7 years and it has never failed. The first need water filter is made in USA and the containers that filer are metal. I think I will stick with the first need water filter
This is meant to be a budget-friendly option. I have had this for a year, and it has been solid. I will check out the First Need Water Filter. Thanks!
I just looked at the filter you recommended, and it seems solid. It would be great for camping but looks too bulky and heavy for the average backpacker. Thank You!
@@BackpackingGearNut :) Depends how valuable you consider your water. I have videos where I run food dye thru it. With how crazy the world is getting I want to know my water is perfect. How often do they find a dead body in a water supply that was there for weeks. Using a sawyer or something else like that would not be good. Ever heard of this sleeping bag Western Mountaineering Bristlecone MF Go look that up. I also run this the best in the world. You just have to ask yourself is it worth the weight? If you want to run a 10lb pack then in my view your just taking to many chances with a sawyer after all it only takes that 1 time. How about this...... Naegleria fowleri is an ameba (type of one-celled organism) that thrives in warm freshwater lakes, rivers, and hot springs. It is often called the "brain-eating ameba" because it can infect the brain and destroy brain tissue. Brain infections caused by Naegleria fowleri are very rare but nearly always fatal. In TN where I hike this happens every year. Someone dies of this. I put importance on items not weight. Water is number 1 and I want to be as perfect as possible. Also depends on the season. In winter the same applies I want the best heat I can get. Now you take my pot set which weighs 3 lbs. People would go crazy. LOL But I can steam and cook anything. I rarely take freeze dried meals they are just not good for you. Now my 2 man tent is a dan durston at 2lbs. My total pack weight is 30lbs. Even with these so called heavy items. Some of my items are heavy and others are super light. Now a trick I use is moving items around the body. For example My water sits on my hip where you feel no weight at all. I wear 2 drop downs. The one on my right hip carries my firearm. The one on my left hip I carry my knife and silky saw. So now when I remove my pack these items stay with me all the time. Search my channel for Silky Professional Gomboy Case and you will see what I mean. Has taken me years to get this dialed in so I can carry what I want and it does not feel like it. If you buy that first need you will not use anything else I promise.
How do you keep the bottle from collapsing?
The smart water bottles are firm enough that they don’t collapse very easily.
Excellent review. Great job! 👍
Thank you
Hey!
👍🏻
Thanks
My pleasure
You may have mentioned but is this one or two servings? Great ideas and I appreciate your details!
The calories are pretty dense. Based on what all of the ingredients said it’s going to be somewhere around 1000 cal. The nice thing is when you make your own food you can add more or add less based on what yourcalorie needs. I didn’t do any more of these videos because no one seems to care about this one. I’m glad somebody watched it.
What's the brand/model of the device to measure voltage/current? Thanks!
Here’s an Amazon link to one that I like better. Edit can be used with all the styles amzn.to/3L45h6E
Thanks. Am in need of an ultra lite and going to rainy Ireland in September.
Keep in mind if you’re going to use a single wall tent, be aware of the humidity because of the air is very saturated. You want to bring a cloth to wipe the inside down after you wake up in the morning. That way you’re not carrying around water with you all day.
the stash weighs double your other systems, but it uses less fuel. There is a trade off. Carry more fuel or add weight to be more efficient and carry less fuel
Get a Nitecore AP10. no need to waste energy to pump your mat. Rechargeable pump and doubles as a lantern. I'm assuming you have a power bank on you for a backpacking trip.
I have a couple different battery powered pumps I use, but I didn’t know that Nitecore makes one. I’ll have to check it out.
Would it brake even i clean it and dry it before winter.?
No. Water expands so if there is no water it will be fine.
I liked your video. I ended up buying both...plus a grayl, and a camelback-lifestraw. Family of four and we will each use a different one for thr upcoming july trip
That’s wonderful. I haven’t really talked about it yet, but I always take two filters with me in case one fails. If the four of you have filters it gives you security if you have one fail
It's big, it's heavy, and it's the most comfortable mat out however those dimple mats don't last. And mine let me down after a week. Seveal leaks. I couldn't believe a pad could perform worse than the Nemo tensor.
I haven’t had any issues yet with leaks but it also matters what the environments like. Sorry to hear you’re having so much trouble with your mats. I’ll just count myself lucky😀
