Trim those long neck vases with ease
Got a long necked vase? Need to trim the bottom? Check out a simple hack for trimming those giraffe necked bottles. I use a Giffin Grip, a bucket or cup that is deeper than the neck and some clay around the rim. This keeps the bottle up right, centered and supported on its shoulders. No more worry about distorting the neck. This trick also works on asymmetrical pots that need a trimming.
Try it out and let me know how it works for you.

Water Etching Technique
มุมมอง 2.6K2 ปีที่แล้ว
In my quest to add more and more layers of work, ahem imagery to my work I have found water etching. Water etching is a technique where a resist is applied to greenware and a sponge is used to remove clay leaving the resisted image behind. Here I show how use vinyl stencils to do the water etching technique.

There are a lot uses for a Cricut machine in the pottery studio. One way that I use my Cricut maker is to cut stencils for my anaglyphs. Anaglyphs are 3d images that appear when you were the old red and blue lens 3d glasses.

I won something. Total shocker for me, here is the unboxing of my new Shimpo pottery stool. Update: I've been using it for the last 8 months now and it is a fantastic stool. I don't think I would have bought one before, but if I ever need a new stool for the studio I will be buying one of these stools. The adjustment is just fantastic and being able to change heights front to back makes throwin...
Raku tong hack
มุมมอง 4342 ปีที่แล้ว
Tongs are an important tool in the process of raku. However most tongs sold at ceramic stores all suffer the same problem. They loosen up and then the tongs no longer close correctly. This can lead to a dangerous situation when pulling pots out of a kiln at 1850 degrees. I mod my tongs so that they don't separate and work safely. It shouldn't have to be done, but a poor design leads to hacks to...

    Thank you so much. I am picking my kiln up on Thursday and I'm less freaked out now I will say my kiln sitter doesnt have a timer. So ive ordered self supporting cones, an analog pyrometer and am gonna be checking all this regularly

    Hi, I am a beginner and purchased an Evenheat 4320LT. To my luck,it had never been used so I’m enjoying the experience so far. I fired a bisque and plan to run a glaze fire to ^6 I’m glad you said to run it with a pyrometric bar of one cone higher. I would have just ran it with a ^6 pyrometric bar instead of the ^7. If I want to fire to a ^6, about how long should I set my kiln sitter timer for? I don’t want it to turn my kiln off prematurely. Thank you.

    • @Christianbaileyartist
      @Christianbaileyartist หลายเดือนก่อน

      If this is the first time firing to cone 6 I would put self supporting cones of 5 and 6 in the kiln where you can see them through the peephole. Then set the timer for 8 hours and check the cones every half hour from hour 6 on until you see cone 6 bending then check every 15 minutes. If the timer is getting close to shutting off and the cone is not bent add another two hours to the timer and keep checking. You can always add more time to the timer while the kiln is running. If you have a hand held pyrometer place the thermocouple in a peephole and keep watch on the temperature. Use the cones inside to verify. Hope this helps.

      I found it wasn't as sticky as the transfer papers which made releasing the vinyl easier. It even allows me to put vinyl on green ware for water etching.

    Hey there, thank you for such an informative video-it’s a bit difficult finding such detailed videos on this kiln. Looking at buying a similar model (DK 716-1) off a friend of a friend, but doing my due diligence first. What cone does this happen to fire to? 6, 8? Couldn’t quite catch it in the video. About how long are your bisque fires? I’ve been reading about 10 hours is expected for the Dover White (^5) clay I’m using. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge!

    • @Christianbaileyartist
      @Christianbaileyartist 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry for the delayed response. This particular kiln is rated for cone 6 and it will reach it but struggles. It is much better for low fire. A cone 05 bisque firing on this kiln runs about 6-8 hours depending on how tightly I packed the kiln. It can also knock it out in 4 hours for when I'm doing an underglaze firing. What will determine the time a kiln takes to reach a temperature is size, power supply, age of the elements, thickness of the bricks and how tightly packed is the kiln.

    Thanks for the demonstration! Have you ever tried screen printing? It's quite simple and you could reuse the screens almost indefinitely. Also, it's much faster to apply the paint. How did you paint on the cracks? They look very cool!

    • @Christianbaileyartist
      @Christianbaileyartist 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've used screen printing for some of my decoration, it just doesn't give me the ability to get the anaglyph technique as well as I would like it. The cracks in the piece are actual cracks. I formed the cup shape by press molding bits of clay in to a plaster mold. The cracks you see are where two pieces are smooshed together.

    • @Christianbaileyartist
      @Christianbaileyartist ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I can. I use a cheap permanent vinyl to create the stencil on my Cricut maker. The material I use for transferring the vinyl is contact paper. I almost exclusively use Amaco velvet underglazes as I find they have been the most stable at cone 10 for my work.

    Keep on promoting the "wild" clay! Just about all I use now is river clay, sifted fine and water only added. I slip cast with it and have great results. I fire the slip from 04 and to 10 to glaze.(lots of shrinkage @ 10), but it turns a nice chocolaty color. Going to try terra sig this week. Thanks for the video.
