    30:42 No one on the Titanic saw any rockets from another ship, and that destroys Cpt Lord's claim that there was a ship between the Californian and the Titanic. There was never "some other ship" in between .

    22:34 Another who would not be easily quieted was the ship's carpenter James McGregor he said the Californian was close enough to see the Titanic's lights and distress rockets.

    6:26 No. 7 was the very first lifeboat lowered, and it was the one that carried William Thompson Sloper who allegedly got off dressed as a woman. He never did. At that point after the impact most were taking the situation lightly thinking they were on the "unsinkable Titanic" so that Murdoch, in charge of lowering the boat, had trouble filling it at all Sloper thus had no reason to think of dressing as a woman. As to where the story came from; he was the first survivor to register at the Waldorf-Astoria, the hotel where all the survivors were going, and the media knew that. At one point the reporters made a rush at his door which his brother Harold who was there with him, repelled, as Walter Lord put it, "perhaps a bit too forcefully." (I wonder if he told them to get lost) At any instance one of the reporters, from the New York Herald, thought he would use the incident to what he thought was a way of teaching the Slopers more respect for the press. He put a story together which stated - guess what - that William Thompson Sloper left the sinking Titanic dressed as a woman

    32:52 The Lordites wanted to prove that the Californian had no way of seeing the rockets but they were mentioned in court. I mean, Lord's testimony often conflicted with that of his officers but they did all talk about the rockets nonetheless. .Also it wasn't only Cpt Lord and his officers, Ernest Gill and carpenter James McGregor mentioned them too.

    Wow so many great points on how this show could’ve been great. Is it absolute hot garbage? No, I’d say it’s good at best but nothing phenomenal like Band of brothers or the pacific was. You didn’t feel as familiar with the characters and I get it, airmen were dropping like flies left and right with every mission but they could’ve did a better job with that. The Tuskegees were totally shoehorned into this show. They had absolutely nothing to do with the 8th(maybe a cameo part with buck seeing them in the stalag camp would’ve felt more natural and made sense to the story). The resistance part was totally pointless considering they just completely dropped it halfway through of Quinn getting back to England. I wish we got some content of them being back in the states whether it was on them training or maybe some family(I liked how they dove into this on both previous titles, it makes them feel human). The worst part of all is them completely skipping the Normandy invasion.

    Nixon was looking at the clock. There was only one contemporary poll that indicates that Nixon won among radio listeners, and the respondents were heavily skewed towards Republicans. Other contemporary polls and commentary had Kennedy winning on both substance and appearance. Your use of colorized imaging is misleading as the debate was broadcast in black and white. In fact in 1960 only about 1% of households had a color tv. Generally contemporary accounts had Nixon winning the next two debates and the fourth and final debate being a draw. Nixon ran a lot of television ads during the last two months before the election, in which time he drew even with Kennedy.

  • @mikeottersole

    And the voting public is still shallow and gullible. Nixon was very intelligent, as was Kennedy, but Nixon got caught. Don't vote for the image, vote for the policies. Nah, too much trouble.

    Daly fixed the election, it’s totally debatable who won. When the election was in question, the Rs told Nixon to concede, we’ll get em next time. I’m actually glad Kennedy was in there, Cuban missle crisis could have gotten ugly and Kennedy responded correctly.

    Dude I just watched Masters of the Air and all I want to do is go back and watch BoB lol. MotA was so cheesy in comparison. Have you heard the theory that the switch to digital made everything worse? Don’t have to worry about wasting film stock, so you shoot pointless scenes, “fix it in post”, actors get lazier etc. BoB and The Pacific were both shot on film (even though The Pacific had its own issues, at least it felt real)

    • @contexthistorychannel
      @contexthistorychannel 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Oh yeah I can see the switch to digital having the negative effect of show creators not valuing scenes. It feels like a lot of modern shows have wasteful or useless scenes *cough walking dead! I also think CGI has had a massively negative effect on certain shows. They use CGI sets or action sequences as a crutch and it lacks soul. Whereas in the practical special effects age when you had a battle scene you had meticulously plan it out to get it to look just right.

    • @ConciseCabbage
      @ConciseCabbage 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@contexthistorychannel with MotA I would have preferred way less external “look at all these planes shots” and more of a subjective focus that is just inside the planes. Like do something new with creative storytelling. Like teach the audience how navigation actually works and let us track where the plan is from the perspective of the actual navigator etc

    China, Yugoslavia, Portugal, Turkey and other nations were neutral. China was Iran’s top supplier along with Israel, Syria, Libya, Pakistan, North Korea and Japan. While Iraq had Soviet Union as top supplier, along with France, West Germany and Greece, additionally USA gave Iraq intelligence and Service along with Saudi Arabia and Kuwait funding Iraq to maintain stability. During 1980-1982, Iraq war more dominant until the Iran invasion of Iraq after they recaptured occupied territories. During 1983-1984 it was a stalemate, even during the tanking war, which was a huge loss for Iranians oil exports. 1985-1987, it was mainly Iranians being the dominant of the war. During that period, USA supported Iran and supplied them weapons in the Iran-Contra affair or scandal, but later switched back to backing Iraq in 1988. In 1988, Iraq was overwhelmingly winning battles against Iranians and Peshmerga, with Iranians suffering huge casualties like the Siege of Basra, where Iraqis won the battle with 10.000 losses, but Iran’s 80.000 losses because of Human wave strategies and Iraq’s use of Chemical Weapons, that is 8 to 1. Iranians called it operation Karbala 6 i think, while Iraqis called it “The Great Harvest”. Iraq became the fourth largest army in the world, had been aided by a large number of Soviet arms, while Iran economically and militarily started to collapse during 1988, considering accepting ceasefire, because they believed that if the war cont, they would suffer huge loss. While Saddam was planning a massive attack against Iran. Iraq even re occupied Iranian territories and looted them in 1988, but withdrew because of they “had no desire to conquer Iranian lands”, so they withdrew and accepted ceasefire. The majority of Western analysts believe that the war had no winners while some believed that Iraq emerged as the victor of the war, based on Iraq's overwhelming successes between April and July 1988. Even Iraqis themselves claimed victorious. I can understand why, because Iran failed to overthrow Ba’ath regime, and failed to spread the revolution in Iraq, which would destabilise Iraq’s diversity completely. Look at aftermath of USA-Iraq war, after Iraq lost, USA basically sold them to Iran, and Iranians took over Iraq and spread Shia-Extremism in the country. Resulted in Iraqis sunni and shia militias having a huge conflict between them, with huge losses. Iraq became a shia dominated country after that. But during Iran-Iraq war, Iraq annihilated the Iranian revolution. Iraq’s territorial desire was unmet, as khuzestan and mehran was still recaptured by Iranians, and Iraq recaptured al-Faw, Halabja, and other territories especially in the Basra province, where Iraq won an overwhelming victory. From my perspective, both countries suffered huge losses and can’t consider any of them as victor of the war, but Iranians definitely were toppled by Iraq in the end.

    Excellent review and assessment of this classic series Slightly disagree that Band of Brothers is the war show by which all others are measured by.Let me introduce you to a little show called Saving Private Ryan. Regardless you capture what made Bank of Brothers distinctive, realistic and compelling story telling. Agree with 10/10 rating. Interesting I while I watched both successor shows about the WW2 South Pacific and airborne experiences and I was disappointed. Totally unfair since both were very well done but recalling the excellence of BoB the other series paled in comparison. Would love for you to compare the real experiences of Easy Company vs the poetic license used by Hollywood. Maybe even reveal what happened to Easy Company soldiers post-war. Keep it up- always look forward to your content.❤❤❤

Sad how the Presidential Debates have declined and the candidates engagement intelligently spoke to the issues. Like that you used a non partisan approach… but come on the Democrats absolutely cheated in that election (Lyndon Johnson and Mayor Daily were notorious cheaters. Interesting that both Kennedy and Nixon were so articulate and thoughtful and then a Kamala add pandering for donations would pop up and it reminded me of the stark decline in the intelligence level of modern day Presidential candidates

    So this whole dilemma about the Californian's inaction is still on ... I still have my doubts whether she was really unable to help at all, to the point of not even waking up Cyril Evans and have him check on the situation. At any instance, it looked suspicious too that the Californian's log had no information about April 14th and 15th (it looked like Cpt Lord was trying to hide sth) and that Cpt Lord's testimony conflicted many times with that of his own officers. In short, no matter if the Californian was actually able to do something or not, her captain and her officers performed deplorably during both inquiries.
