An Ultrasonic sensors measure distances based on transmitting and receiving ultrasonic signals. This video explains the detailed working of an ultrasonic sensor, HCSR04. It also explains the use of trigger and echo pins on the sensor.
Ultrasonic sensors are used extensively in the field of robotics. These ultrasonic waves can penetrate through water and hence they can be used to calculate the depth of wells.

    Brilliantly explained. I have a few of these and some use LM358 and some use LM393 comparators with the same schematic. I can never get them to be accurate past 5cm. Which, for my application, is fine, but not for others.

    Why would you need all that if you can just reverse 2 wires on dc motor and jave reverse polarity

    wouldn't motor voltage be much greater than the "1"? that would mean D1 is reverse biased also.

      I agree with you. I am working at the moment with this IC and really try to understand it properly. The explanation is in my view not correct. If the motor is on, the current will not run through the diodes. They are placed to let the current run, if the motor is switched off. In normal state the current runs through one output to the other. That means one output is high while the other one is low. Correct me if I am wrong.

    For IR LED 100K is much much too big. It should be about 100 Ohms.
