Roll On Columbia - Banjo, Fiddle, And Guitar
Thank you for 1,000 subscribers! I never thought I'd make it this far. I know it's a modest accomplishment, but I'm still quite happy. This is an old Woodie Gutherie song about the construction of the grand coulee dam. I actually first heard this song performed by fellow TH-cam musician Dan d. Dirges if you haven’t heard his music I highly recommended his channel. I recorded myself playing each track individually starting with guitar and vocals, clawhammer banjo, and fiddle. #banjo #appalachian #fiddle #folk #western #country #traditional #ballad #bluegrass #clawhammerbanjo #clawhammer #stringband #oldtime #americana #southern #appalachian #folkmusic

Oh thank you! I use personus as a program. I use the presonus microphone that came in the box with it for vocals and the other condenser mic says MXL 991 on it. Nothing fancy. Maybe my sound would be improved by more state of the art equipment. In the future I’ll definitely do that. I usually start the first track in stereo mode (guitar and vocals or banjo and vocals) I play my instrument and sing at the same time. The microphone is about 10 inches away from my instrument. Then I’ll add a new track and I’ll record banjo, and finally I’ll add the final track for fiddle. Fiddle is usually the most finicky. I’ll do a couple of takes before I get the take I like. Then I’ll use shotcut free video software to make the video. I’ll just Google stuff like old banjo and fiddle pictures. That’s how I do it. Nothing fancy. We have the ability to cut albums in our bedrooms now. I’m not the best musician for sure, but I really dig the fact that I can express my own unique take on this music. If I ever am able to inspire someone with my music I will feel like I’ve accomplished something of note in my musical career. Thanks for listening, and for your enthusiasm. It means a lot. The hardest thing is selecting a song I want to record. Btw you have an absolutely epic channel.

I got into Irish trad because my dad was a banjo player in the 5 string bluegrass way (he and my mom were from south Boston so this was odd), and I was exposed to a lot of traditional Irish music as well as bluegrass stuff. I’m grateful to be able to explore folk music in the way I am now. It has caused me to become very interested in history as a consequence so I am always trying to learn more. @@Orourkebanjo you are very welcome. I would have learned more of my Irish history from music and song than I did at school. I love bluegrass music also only I don't claim to be very good at it. When I recorded an album 'ORIGINS' over in Atlanta Georgia I labeled it "Greengrass Music" because I knew it wasn't bluegrassy enough 😎. I enjoyed the making of the album though and travelled down south to nashvile and took in the Smokey Mountains for photo shoots etc with Emphasis Records. I also got to meet big acts back stage at the Grand Ole Opry like Connie Smith, Jim Ed Brown (Rip) and Darius Rucker. You can never tell where music will bring you. I believe everybody should learn an instrument

@@JohnBreenFolk I agree. I’m delighted that music brought me to Ireland. I definitely feel a lot more connected to my roots with each visit. It gives me a different perspective on life with each visit. I takes all types to move the world, and us ballad singers are part of an ancient and very human tradition. Thank God we still have this connection in our modern world! When I go out busking I feel like I’m doing something that stems from the medieval times. It’s a very perennial type of feeling. It’s these little things that keep our western cultures vital and alive. A Swiss man once walked up to me after playing music, and he said the thing I like about Irish music/culture is how vital and masculine it seems. He told me this is a thing he doesn’t see in Swiss culture. I usually sing my own folk music from America in the Appalachian style, but I think my ethnic nature shines through in me to attract me to this type of life.

@@Orourkebanjo Wow man--you are superb! I've been in this area of North Carolina for most of the 1967-2024 years of my life--except for a short period in Denver when bluegrass was the jamming people did in the parks. All that said, I am a pretty mediocre musician myself--compared to all the other fiddle and banjo players I know. In the 1990s and Y2K's I was able to go to 2-3 Fiddlers Festivals a year in the NC, VA and WVa area--Mt. Airy, Clifftop, Rockbridge, Hopping John, etc.--where people all jam together and enter "competitions" up on stage--unlike, say Merle Fest where professional bands are the entertainment. Since I wasn't the most talented musician, I shot a lot of video footage of people playing, and interviewed a bunch of them. I have a TH-cam channel with a lot of this footage, including some of the instructional workshops and related documentaries. It is the Xanther97 channel. Frank Lee, Kelly Breiden, Mike Seeger and others are on there. Old Time music started a resurgence in the 1960s when New Lost City Ramblers and Grateful Dead fans wanted to explore the world of fiddle tunes. The iconic festival then was Union Grove. The Old Time movement had a resurgence after the Coen Brothers' film "Oh Brother" became a hit. A whole new generation of college-age musicians started showing up at the fiddlers festivals. Here in NC the Mount Airy festival in early June is usually the first of the season. Here in the Durham Chapel Hill area the Hopping John Festival is in September. We used to have weekly Old Time music jams and parties here in this area. Now as my generation has gotten older and had to deal with other issues, the jams are less often but they do happen. And there are several local bands that have come out of this. My guess is that there will be another resurgence of this music sometime in the future. Keep doing it man--you've got the feeling of it. th-cam.com/video/1Z7dDzTk1KA/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/fUu683WsWG0/w-d-xo.html

Good stuff! Do you know if this tune has any relation to the ballad about the 1798 rebellion? Same title, but the melody sounds entirely different to me.

@@FreddyBadger I don’t know. I know the folk song you’re referring to by the same name. I like frank Harte’s version of wind that shakes the barley. Frank Harte is worth listening to. Another great Irish folk singer is Len graham. I’d highly recommend Len. All the best Freddy.

beautiful, I love this song !!! It also reminds me a lot of the ballad of captain kid, I wonder if the two songs are somehow related :). I love your work, thank you so much for sharing it

I’ll look into this ballad. I’ve never heard of it before. I always like it when people recommend interesting ballads. I’m always looking for new material. This song connected with me. A Robin Hood type story. I love songs that tell captivating tales like this. All the best, and thank you for the kind words.
