Coleman's March - Steve Baughman - Solo Guitar - Middle Finger Thwack
I recorded this arrangement for my CD, Farewell to Orkney (iTunes and CDBaby.com). It demonstrates the Middle Finger Thwack applied to a great old-time fiddle tune. Short technical demo at the end. Not clawhammer, but a cool derivation. The "pick-brush" pattern is what I used in Bony Crossing the Alps (TH-cam), although the thumb on that piece was more on the pickup to the downbeat and here it is primarily on the downbeat.
TMI? Sorry. I get carried away with this stuff.
Guitar by James Goodall, 1987 Rosewood Standard.

Sweet Caroline - Fingerstyle Guitar - Steve Baughman
มุมมอง 25K10 ปีที่แล้ว
My arrangement of Sweet Caroline. Double Drop D tuning. Boy, was it ever hard not to sing along! Dedicated to Joe Lubus of North Carolina, who first inspired me to play guitar. Thanks Joe! I hope you notice smatterings of the Lubus Pick throughout :-) And thanks Neil! Guitar by John Slobod. Audio/Video recording and editing by Doug Young
❤
What brand are those finger picks? I've looked all over and can't find them. My nails won't hold up anymore.
Celtic music was imported by immigrants from the British Isles first to the Virginia settlement. It eventually evolved into folk and country music. You can hear the influence.
Excellent…..glad I stumbled on this….it’s 8:00am on a cold Sunday morning, just having a cup of tea, and wondering what sort of day it’s going to be…….happy, cheerful, bright. Thank you.
Awesomeness and Joy on 6 strings! Bravo!
For me, the sound of the acoustic guitar has brought me such joy, excitement, and consolation in times of trouble ever since I was in my teens in the 1960s. Therefore, I have listened to practically all the great guitarists and none have given me greater pleasure than Steve Baughman and Robin Bullock - and this piece is pure heaven for me.
I keep searching for this to hear it again and again. A beautiful piece by O’Carolan (not bad for a Meath man) played superbly by Steve Baughman. Probably the best rendition I have heard. Love it.
Reminds me of some of the great duets with John Renbourn and Bert Jansch. Sublime.
What an amazing arrangement!!! Have you got the tab? Absolutely love it!!
Hi thanks you. Sorry. I have not tabbed it out. Double Drop D with capo at 1.
Man so good
j'adorerais savoir jouer comme toi!!!...
Love this Steve!👍
Great stuff Steve!
Robin playing a Taylor, what model please. Steve, you playing a Martin? Beautiful song, and outstanding playing. wow. Thank you!!!
I think Robin's is a 700 series. I saw him 2 years ago and he was playing a boutique guitar (forgot the maker). Steve was playing a Ryan guitar then. He changes more frequently than Robin.
Got to have it! Where is the Tablature? 🙏❤
Those parallel thirds in accordance with the harmonic progression bring me to tears.
Wish I could flick a booger like Brother Steve.
Hello, guys. Do you also do flatpicking melodies of reels and jigs? Gorgeous sound 😉
Clawhammer sound pretty hypnotic and strange on guitar .
Wonderful!
I've always loved you're playing Steve, and honestly rate you as one of the best players of this generation. Always about the tune and groove. Watching this does nothing to change that. Thanks for the mini tutorial, just wish you could come to UK sometime. Not gonna happen anytime soon … just put it in the diary ;)
Holy shit is there a tab for this???
Hi. (Your name sure is hard to spell.) 😊. No tab. Sorry. Double D tuning though. Give it a shot. Fun to play.
I just keep coming back to listen to that strum @ 02.36. Does it for me every time.
Darn, I can't get this tune out of my head ! What would it cost to have the tabs for it ?
Dance of the Two French Fries. Nice and crispy!
Now i need to learn how to play this . Spectacular

Wooow.....happy moment....,merci beaucoup....Excellent guitariste en oeuvre
Excellent guitar style.
Man how do I get both of you here in October 2019????
Wow ! Amasing. Just to clarify, french fries translates to patates frites in Quebecois (French Canadian from Quebec, Canada) or pommes de terres frites in french from France. I prefer the french canadian way ;) Very nice guitar playing, thank you !
great voice you have!
Bill Sims I sound like Marcel Marceaux. 😂
Excellent.
Sweet! No pun intended.
When are you touring :) That was outstanding...!!!!!!!!
Beautiful playing...
I love this! You say in the video description. "Boy, was it ever hard not to sing along!" I would have loved it it you did sing along! The only thing better would be to sing it with you!
Oui tu es Charlie, no other like you, and the guitar hasn't changed a bit since Bony Crossing The Alps, which incidentally I have enjoyed many times over the years.
Thank you. I just saw this. Much appreciated :-)
Not TM at all!!! More Please, thanks!
Very accurate flicking
This is truly healing music.
So neat to see a Circa with that kinda play wear! Killer stuff, Steve!
Thanks, the guitar is even worse off now :-)
Excellent playing!
Can't believe I haven't commented on this before... two of my all time favorite guitarists, "alone and together".... does it get any better? Virtuosity + Joy makes the best music....
what kind of guitar is that
Hi, made by John Slobod, Maine, Circa Guitars. Lovely instrument. Thx for asking. sb
any chance to find a tutorial somewhere ?
+Sylvain Clerici Hi, the tutorial starts at around 2:30. There is no tab for the tune. It is basically the Middle Finger Thwack. Guitar in Double Drop D and the melody is not hard. It is getting the groove technique down that is tricky. But manageable. Go for it! Thanks for your interest.
+FriendlyBanjoAtheist i will give it a try. i just bought "the power of the claw" and i keep wondering if i succeed performing it because of YOUR groove which is different from mine ! but i will keep on . Anyway thank you for your music, it's really nice and it's a shame there is not more song/cover available from you/and others on youtube. Long live clawhammer guitar !
+Sylvain Clerici Remember, The technique I use in this particular video is not claw hammer. In this video I am using thumb on the downbeat. In the claw hammer it is thumb on the offbeat. I am also doing plenty of UP picking here. In clawhammer I do zero of that. As far as my groove versus yours, feel free to make it your own :-) But, as I stress in the DVD, it is very important to internalize the basic pattern first. Come to a guitar camp someday, you will love it. Sit around talking about this sort of stuff. Thank you do r your interest, and feel free to let me know how it goes for you.
+FriendlyBanjoAtheist i know it s not clawhammer here, but the groove difference is my main interrogation ! Concerning the camps, if by any chance you come to France i ll be glad to be with you. thanks for the answers and have a nice day
+Sylvain Clerici Too bad, I toured Bretagne last fall. Gorgeous there! Good luck with this.
thanks Steve- now I can't get this tune out of my head
+Steve Sewell Sorry, But, hey, that's better than having 99 Bottles of Beer stuck in there. :-) thanks for listening.
Steve, I just recently discovered you and I love all your work! Especially Rambel To Cashel!
+Justin C You're very kind. Thanks much.
Brilliant, as usual.
This is SO great!!!!
Fantastic! Beautiful playing.
