Abandoned Cape Breton
Canada
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 25 พ.ย. 2023
Cape Breton, nestled in the eastern part of Nova Scotia, was once a thriving hub of industry during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The abundant natural resources and strategic location of this island attracted industries such as coal mining, steel production, and textiles. The coal mines employed generations of families, the steel mills produced iron that built this nation, and the textile factories wove a fabric woven with resilience. However, as time passed and industries evolved, many of these buildings became obsolete. Slowly but surely, they were left to decay, becoming haunting reminders of a distant past. In this channel, I venture into these forgotten places, uncovering their stories while embracing the thrill of urban exploration.
The Lost Settlement of St. Esprit
Step into the forgotten pages of history as I uncover the captivating tale of the lost settlement of St Esprit on Cape Breton Island. Following the fall of the fortress of Louisbourg, this once-thriving fishing village disappeared, leaving behind few traces of its existence. Join me on this journey of rediscovery as delve into historical records, archaeological discoveries, and local tales to uncover the story of St Esprit.

Fantastic aerial shots! Glad to see there's still interest in this fascinating location
Take 2. Great video and story. I like what you did at timestamp 9:02
Great channel. Glad I subbed. I cant wait to see the next 1. Merry Christmas to you and yours
Thanks for the sub!
Something on Cape Dauphin would be cool. Cool history and a cave there. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Dauphin
Stirling Mine is a neat place for sure. First time I went there it was dark which made it much more interesting I think. When we 'turned the corner' around the wall that kinda obscure the...flood plain...as you put it, wow what a thing that was. If you go back definitely linger on that flood plain because your video does not do it justice at all! What a fantastic yet disgusting mark we left on this landscape there!
This is such a good video, very well done and informative..
Thank you! William’s American 4th great grandson thanks you💪🏽
Awesome video. I visited this place with school when it was operational , many years ago. I still remember how big some of the trout were , it was a great feild trip.
Very cool!
Before covid we were sawing a bunch of large 4inch by 8inch slap wood for this place it was a company from newfoundland but I think covid killed the place they were planning on oping the fish farm for salmon i think
That's pretty cool. Too bad the pug got pulled. It's getting to the point it will need to be scrapped soon, I'm thinking. I found two documents online for it being sold, both times is was a company based out of Norway. Wasn't aware of the NFLD company. What a shame.
WOW never knew
Wow, now there's some history that wasn't taught in our schools. At least not to this extent. Thanks for making this video
Thanks for enjoying.
Fantastic video. I love your story it comes with. Thank you for showing us this. 🌻🍁🌻
I used to drive over form the plant in the 90s to watch the fish in the tanks. Awesome Vid.
Thanks. I remember the Cavalier Tavern too. Been gone a long time.
Nice video. The Lingan fish farm has never been a closed containment farm. It used flow-through technology which is actually considered one of the best technologies for land-based fish farms. It probably was ahead of its time when it started at the end of the 1980's as only in recent years, the technology has developed so far that land-based fish farming is becoming more feasible from a financial and fish welfare point of view.
Thanks. All the research I found didn't talk about flow-through. That's super interesting though. Unlikely to start up again there, however, by the looks of things.
Theres your next Nordic Spa
That's why I have spent my entire life standing the gaff. My awesome grandfather has been a great influence on my life.
His story is a great influence on a lot of Cape Bretoners and to coal miners beyond our island. You can tell by some of the comments on this that William Davis is not far away from our hearts as an island community. I'm really gland you enjoyed the video!
The most of story I have ever heard of my grandfather . I'm so proud to be his grandson. Probably why iv
Thanks for this video. Making it all come alive.
Thank you for this video! William Davis is my great great grandfather. I always love hearing more details about his story and our family history :)
Thanks for checking it out, glad you enjoyed it.
Mine too💪🏽
@Cancerman404 I'm the great great grandson to ella mildred mcpherson, mildred and myrtle were mcpherson sisters. We are related
Thank you for posting. William Davis was my great grandfather. I am hoping to go for the 100 anniversary.
Hi Cathy, thanks so much for watching. I hope you can make it. I will certainly be there. Hope to see you there.
Nice video, but as a former journalist, I have a simple suggestion: Ask. Seriously, find the authority that runs the place (or the power plant) explain you want to do a video of whatever. 8 times out of 10, they'll let you. You might have to travel with a security guard or whatever, but chances are they'll have more information about what you're filming than you realize.
Sometimes I do. Some times I don't. :) That's always good advice though.
thats some great history. I was born & raised in Dominion & have recently moved back.
Welcome home.
SO! I was right. The farm and the power plant are the same thing to me. (I'm from Dominion. And your take on the sandbar is nonsense. It's not going anywhere)
Another great video, can’t wait for the next one
Great Videos. What model Drone do you use for these shots?
DJI mini 4 Pro
Great vid as always can not wait to see the next one
I wish I had known you were making this video I would have let you use some old drone shots I have from when the main building was still standing.
That's a shame, would have used it.
It probably could have been repurposed as a hatchery, but no one was willing to cough up the funding.
Hard to make it profitable.
@@AbandonedCapeBreton Ya there's no making a profit with a hatchery, it would have to be government funded like the one in Margaree.
Have you ever Metal Detected the site?
No, but I bet there's a lot there to be found.
We replaced the roof on Marconi house about 25 years ago and I must say there was some really cool artefacts in the attic.
Probably stuff they can't fit into the display, must have been neat to see all that.
I've seen people ripping up the tailings pond there with dirt bikes and ATVS when it's dry, I don't know what's in that yellow dust, but it doesn't look like anything I wanted to be breathing.
It would be all the metals and slag that were not collected in the previous mining operations, it all would have washed away mostly. Just the dust that is there is all that is left. Not great to breath in, for sure, but there's probably worse things to have in your lungs - like asbestos or radioactive dust. ATV's dudes are probably okay, not that we'll ever know... :)
I loved this. Thank-you. I am very interested in industrial history (and broadly related topics). I was completely unaware that there was a Marconi museum in Glace Bay. I shall add it to the itinerary for my forthcoming visit in Spring 2026.
Yes, there certainly is. Glad you found it useful!
Marconi used Nicola teslas technology
Love the video, but it's located Marconi towers road, not port morien
Should have said towards Port Morien
Visited the antenna on Cape Cod...
Awesome, how much was there? Still intact?
Thanks for the history!
Excellent work young feller.
This is great work you're doing with this channel.
We really should rebuild the Table Head site as a museum.
I think some it it overlaps with private property and a ball field now.
Do you have any knowledge on the forts / barracks that we’re located down the sandbar road in south bar , there was two buildings there at least and a spot for shooting/ observation built into the cliff
