Super appreciative,DJ. 🙏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Great ma man .
Bro , what kind of shotgun mic are you using in this video ?
Awesome video, DJ. Thanks again for taking the time to share. I think of you aren't being yourself people can kinda tell it comes across as forced or that thing where you say it sounds good, but there is something missing. that I can't put my finger on.
Great advice, I really appreciate you putting this out there.
I just came by this video via my homepage. I've been intrested in doing VA but haven't really put much time and thought into it. This seems like a call to action. I have done some acting gigs for small shorts and student films and voice acting slways seemed fun (I watch a lot of anime too so...). I do have a problem of not being objective, that can go either way. Anyways. Nice chill vid.
dope but this could of been a 10 min video. .lol u get a lil sidetrack
My boy is back 🥹🥹🎉🎊🍾
I'm looking forward to the video on DIY demos.
would the audio technica 2040 be a decent starting mic
Is there a difference in the output? Can you hear it?
There isn’t any perceivable difference as far as I know.
😁 Those brown walls of yours, DJ. Hmmmm. Haha. Thank you for more solid information! Makes 100 percent sense. -- I watched a VO video for beginners that had recommended taking 3 to 6 months and just research. I laughed at it. But the more I dig in, the more I see the point in that. Although...for me personally... I have to be careful with "procrastilearning."
Yo DJ just wanted to thank you man. Your videos are just absolute gold for getting into Voice acting. I usually don't really care about smaller YT Channels and swipe them away but im so happy I actually follow you. You're a massive help not just to my research, but hopefully to my life. If I someday make it big as a Voice actor I will shout you out constantly, that's a promise!
Definitely need help understanding the language clients use to explain what they are seeking...and how it translates to where in my self and in my voice I have to sit to produce the sounds they are after. There are many ways for me to sound confident, warm, enthusiastic, or sexy. What's the idea..just audition aimed at the clients needs and see what sticks or doesnt ? I'm four audio books into my VO endeavors, using the reads/audtions to get in reps. I'm 57. Got here from being unable to do other work previous jobs...auto accident. Any income I can generate is positive movement after 16years of being in bed (with body damage and concussion effects ) or having to return to the bed for a significant portion of a they . But now, the last few years, I can sit up all day and do other things. Had gear already, built an audio blanket booth. Trying to figure out what I'm actually doing, as in how to spend my day; demos, audition, narrate, listening, head spinning !Thanks !
Currently stalking your collection. Thank you, DJ ! Your presence here is much needed. I'm terrible at discussing $$ with potential clients. (I'm coming form being a performing musician to VO(newbie) Gamsahamnida !
Awesome, THANK YOU, Dj.
Got it i have seen those before, but never even thought about them. I have had a bunch of clients on fiverr they have been happy and a bit easier. but I know eventually I will get more like this. Thanks again man.
Thank DJ this is very encouraging! 🥲
I almost got scammed myself. A guy wanted me to give him 1000 "auditions" so he could get me ready to "put my voice into AI". And after I gave him those 1000 auditions.... I then have to pay him 5k. Ridiculous! And this guy is a professional, well established VO!!!
Man, thanks for this. i am getting a lot of gold from you, man. I have a question i am on fiverr a Canadian agency reached out wants a raw file. Wants me to sync which terrifies me. They want a demo of my voice at 4410 hrtz 16 but pcm 5 1:30 min videos. Should I turn this down? I know nothing about hrtz yet or any of that. Sorry again not the place I'm just really stuck and have not knowledge outlet
Don't stress man! That first part is easy-peezy. I just recorded a shorts just for you: th-cam.com/users/shortsa5w5Qoae3qs?feature=share As for time syncing, that's a bit trickier; depending on which DAW you're using, the process is different. There are likely many different processes that people use. But I'll explain the gist of what I think is the simplest: If you're time syncing to a scratch track (a pre-recorded VO), then you can open that audio file in a music player and start recording a session in your DAW. Then simply play the audio at a low volume through headphones and shadow that scratch VO. If you make a mistake, just rewind and re-record. No need to stop the DAW recording. Once you've got the whole VO recorded, cut out all the mistakes and then open a multitrack session (if using Adobe Audition) and lay your VO on track 1 and the scratch on track 2. Then clip yours to match the timing of the scratch. If any sections don't align correctly, re-record that section and try to line it up again. Rinse and repeat until the entire audio is complete. Then merge the multiple clips into one single file and export. Thats it. TH-cam search "how to time-sync in [INSERT DAW]" and you'll find a guide, I'm sure. Maybe I'll try to put one together soon. Hope this helps! -DJ
Also, PCM is essentially the same thing as a WAV file.
@djdykes_vo Man D You didn't have to do that. i really appreciate you, brotha. That always scared the hell out of me syncing, that is. I'm going to start practicing that. I use wondershare filmora DAW. I used that to make my TH-cam channel videos.
@djdykes_vo got it thanks man.
Thank you very much brother for sharing this. This was probably the most informing, well-presented, in depth and concise video/expose on the topic. A very sincere and genuine energy which answered many of the questions I had exactly. This was inspiring and empowering vs making it look daunting and threading it to a course deemed "the answer" like many videos/channels do. A breath of much needed fresh air on this uphill journey/mountain climb! Lastly I will say you have a very Obama energy about you. If Obama had an unknown son (:O!) doing VO work, it would be you spot on! Much respect for all the game dropped here. Bless!
Thank you brother, for all the advice, the acknowledgements, the realities, the boost up, the golden tone, and for keeping it inspiringly accessible. Subscribed ! I'm four audio books in and working on my DIY demo currently.
I never make my own demos and I've been at this 20+ years. Especially of you are just starting out hire someone or barter with an experienced director/ producer to help create your demo. At the very least use their ears for critique to make adjustments. Otherwise your ego is leading the charge and this will not garner the best results!
Your point that practicing even what won’t be sent out is a challenge and a relief. I don’t want to “waste time” working on something that won’t see the light of day but it’s a good way to get the ball rolling.
In b4 your youtube channel blows up. (it is going to). also conGRATS fuck yes
Haha! I'm not sure about blow up, but as long as my content reaches the right folks, I'm satisfied. Thank for your vote of confidence!

It's a great video, as always. Damn, I thought you were 23 or something.😂 keep up the good work!
LMAO I blame the all the preservatives in my food growing up 😆. Thanks for watching! -DJ
Great video. Thanks.
Thanks for the video dude
You're very welcome! 🤙🏾
😃 "maybe if it was 6 figures.." Ha! --- I just want to comment again to nudge this algorithm.
👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼 Damn. You were speaking directly to me, DJ ! Literally, And figuratively. That was my question you had up there! Straight to my heart. Love this message. Comprehensive indeed. And NOPE. I ain't clicking off the video. A wise man told me "practice practice practice," and I'm gonna listen. I'm taking all of these nuggets of information, again, to heart. I need to get out of my own way. Great video, man. Thank you, and continue your success over there !
I was happy to share my thoughts with you man. I really hope you get going with VO and when you hit me up a year from now, you're a working actor. It's possible with hard work and dedication. No doubt. -DJ
@@djdykes_vo Thank you DJ ! Your delivery, real world, realistic, and actionable insight, and some gentle tough love is Highly appreciated. It's like you have a second career within VO. I'm looking forward indeed, man. Thank you again.
I've watched a ton of videos now on getting into VO. Your take and presentation is really clicking with me thank you. I went to check out your website but it seems Bitly is flagging it as potential spam when I follow the link in the description.
Thank you for letting me know! I also saw the same error when I clicked my bitly link and removed it from my videos. My web designer is sorting everything out now. -DJ
I started this VO thing 6 months ago at 52 yrs old. It is a long journey, AND I already have 2 regular jobs. Great advice to temper expectations. The work is picking up, but I'm not getting rich anytime soon, and I'm so ok with that. Loving the process.
Hell yeah! I love to hear that. -DJ
Great advice! Thank you for taking the time to explain this!
Hope it made sense! It's not meant to scare anyone away from freelance sites or pay-to-plays, but to make solid VO business decisions. -DJ
Love your honesty about not being an expert on interfaces 😂
Gotta keep it 💯! 😆😆
Can you run us through what your current booth looks like?
Sure, I'll put one together in a couple weeks. It's nothing impressive, but it gets the job done. Did you have anything in particular you were curious about? -DJ
@djdykes_vo Really, how much room you think you need and how you deal with outside noise like HVAC or family moving about. My "booth" is in my basement, not too far from my HVAC unit, so that can be problematic.
The quality jump at 2:50 is stunning. This really is possible for a lot of people, including me
Glad you found it insightful! -DJ
I wonder if I can record a demo on audacity
th-cam.com/video/mgQ-CO_GXd8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=KB8UJ6rD1YPYhPI7
I'm glad I found your YT channel. I'm just starting and follow Bill DeWees on his daily morning "huddle" (about 15 minutes).
Soak up as much information as you can! Glad to have you along 🤙🏾 -DJ
@@djdykes_vo I'm a dry sponge
I am just (JUST NOW) starting from ground zero. Having the confidence to put in those 10,000 bad hours is a steep hill to climb.
You're not wrong. But I found it to be easier to just focus on the one hour in front of you. Putting one's head down and just doing the work one hour at a time yielded great results for me. Keep us updated on your journey! -DJ
I needed to hear this! 감사합니다, 선배님
Glad it helped!!😆
I am terrified of Audio books I spar tyson In his prime before I take one of those jobs. Thanks for the info D.
This was the most difficult part for me to learn when crossing the threshold into Voice Over. But your videos have been extremely helpful in mitigating the stress by allowing me to set proper expectations while pursuing my dream! Many thanks for all the insight you share!
Super solid advice! I saw on LinkedIn today though, Voiceover Roundtable is on hiatus 😢
I'm that guy that hasn't even picked up a mic yet. But I Strongly feel you gave this guy the encouragement he needs. As well as just being insightful, real, and personable for us all. Oh... and a riot, too. 🙂You balance these traits well. Thank you!
I learned a lot about exclusivity and perpetuity tradeoffs. Thank you so much!
No problem! Those are important industry concepts to understand. -DJ
Great information. Thank you!
Glad you found it useful! Let me know if you have any questions. -DJ
Don't mind me, just binging your videos like a fuckin' maniac haha dude I realized the coaching hubris in me and had to rip the band aid off. I joined GVAA for a year, saved up for it and took the leap. I've already learned so so much and it's motivated me to practice a lot more, because there's now coaches looking at me and expecting me to get better as well! These videos kick ass man, appreciate them!!
There you go! Taking that first step is the hardest part. Now work to keep that momentum. You got this! 😤
Dude THANK you these videos are answering so so many questions I've had bouncing around in my head! I can relate to a lot of what that guy said as well so it's nice to have a full discussion about it!
Glad my content is helping. Many folks have similar questions about this industry, so if I ever get questions that I think will help the greater audience, I'll try to make a video about them. -DJ
