My name is Petra. On July 19, 2018, I was diagnosed with advanced stage adrenal fatigue syndrome. This channel is meant to document my journey and educate others about this insidious syndrome.
LET'S UNDERSTAND FIGHT AND FLIGHT - LET'S GET INTO THE LIMBIC SYSTEM. DNRS PROGRAM .
I am including these links as I mentioned in the video. While I was healing I did research and found these resources so valuable. We need to work with the mind and I know I have said this over and over again. Once I realized that my limbic system was dysfunctional it helped me to gain a lot of knowledge on why I was stuck in fight and flight and also how important it was to constantly work with the mind. This is interesting information and I wanted to share it. So many of you are wanting to learn more about what is happening to us. Dr. Lam told me to stay as positive and grateful as possible. We must have as much soothing, inspirational going into our brains. We must work diligently on watching our stress . I know for many of you this is challenging because of work, children, family issues, dealing with other health issues but we must stay the course. I knew I had to change and this is the part that is the most challenging because we have been one way for a long time. Many of you are type A personalities or aren't happy with your lives, caring for ill parents or ill children, chronic people pleasers, doing things for people constantly so that you will be liked or loved. Depressed or anxious or negative or addicted family members that were part of your growing up. You maybe addicted to many things yourself. Many of you have no concept of what it is to relax. We are now learning through this illness that I AM VALUABLE, I AM WORTHY, I WILL HAVE TO SAY NO, I CAN SET A BOUNDARY, IT ISN'T HOW MUCH MONEY I HAVE OR MAKE, WHAT TYPE OF TITLE I HAVE. We are all programmed to believe that all of these things make us who we are. This is simply not true as we have value just as we are right now, even if we are ill. This is a time to focus on us as much as possible. Let's keep learning and get out of this place we are in. I know you got this. Information is KEY.
Lots of love,
Petra

I'm having acupuncture for kidney energy loss (alternative doctors) yin/yang disfunction. I find it very helpful but I only need one broken nights sleep and crash for 3-4 days. I get very depressed then, just so very fed up with constantly feeling rough, it's up and down, up and down. My legs are very weak and I need sticks to walk anywhere outside. Still have minimum confidence. It's a long haul. I've gone back to making music to try to calm the inner CPTSD that I've had for decades and what has caused my present problem. Petra, you have helped me through and have been an inspiration. Thank you from' my heart.

Thank you for this wonderful video petra im on Dr lams programe and in advaced stages !! Im finding it hard to Change my mindset to be more grateful and . Positive i keep trying but im finding it very challenging your videos are inspirational thank you
I understand. Nothing about this is a straight line. We also know how poorly we feel so trying to think positive and grateful throughout the day can be challenging. This means we are in the process of creating more of a habit. What we are trying to do is calm down our limbic system that is stuck. It is interpreting information through our 5 senses as being a threat, but it isn't really but our body and mind while being stuck responds like it is. When we interrupt the pattern of negative thinking with positive or gratitude, putting in soothing music, inspirational things, calming. All of this adds up to telling our nervous system( which gets regulated by the brain) that we are safe. It is a process. It isn't anything to beat yourself up about about and being angry with yourself that you aren't doing things right. It's about practice. It's about getting back on the bus. You have to understand it is hard for all of us believe me. It is a step by step, moment by moment practice. Also what is good. Close your eyes and say, "I am not the body, I am not even the mind. I found neither to be reliable and this creates some space between the two. Very good to say. Very soothing and healing. It's something you can say over and over to yourself. Please try this. Check in with me anytime. I love to hear how people are doing and if I can be helpful with some valuable information. Keep going. Just keep going.... xoxo Petra

Hi Anita, Thank you for checking in. Never ever give up. This is a process isn't it. Everything is about gaining insight into something isn't it. Learning. I always feel it's good to have options and learning more about what is happening to the body. We need to get more into balance. What does that mean to us and what do we have to do. I have always said, this is an individual journey and we all have to go our own way but there are so many times when someone says something and we are ,"oh that makes sense maybe I'll try that. I love these moments. Are you housebound or out in the world? Lots of love to you, Petra
Hi Petra ===. Have just listened to this 👍. Thank you for taking the time to record this for all AFS sufferers. I will certainly follow up the contacts that you have given us. A lot to absorb. I am working with Dr Lam coaching - recovery is a slow process but l am beginning to see some changes and l am certainly realizing that working on mental input is so important. 💕Thank you💕
Hi Cynthia! Yes, the mind so important to work with don't we know that. If we don't work with it it will take control and can take us some places we don't want to go to. I know how strong you are! You will get there. Sending you love.. Petra
My nurse at Lam clinic thinks I’m improving based on how I describe my increasing strength. 👍
Oh this is such great news!!! Increasing strength, that's amazing. What a champion you are. We see how challenging this is and look always at the small increments of change because those are so big for us. Acknowledge them out loud. Write them down so you can see the progress you are making. These are big WINS. Thank you so much for checking in and be so proud of yourself because you are the one, the only one that is doing the work to get through this.. Lots of love always, Petra
I’m in advanced stage I’ve had adrenal burnout/ fatigue for 35 yrs. Nobody ever diagnosed it. What kind of doctor diagnosed u?
Hi Kevin, I had an AFS doctor diagnose me. Are you housebound or able to still function in the outside world?
Thank you so much for your video Petra. I have had a handful of crashes in my life, DNRS kind of save my life in away, I first did the program 5 years ago it did help me so much but I haven’t done it in a while I stopped after a couple years it definitely helps buts is a lot of work every single day.
I came to realize that being healthy does require a commitment. It requires Daily practices to things that are healthy choices that add up to big wins over time. Anything about progressing in ourselves requires some type of dedication and commitment don't you think. If you dabble you will get mediocre responses if you commit you will have significant gains. Everything is about choices. What do I have to do today that will help me to feel better and to get stronger? I ask myself that question all the time and you will definitely get healthy answers.
Sending you Love!!

Thanks for encouraging words today I’m in advanced stages and I’m on very restricted diet my body is only letting me eat the bare minimum . I’ve had to cut out various foods since going into this stage and the amount eaten has to be so small.
@@lizdowd4788 you have a lot of stomach issues
@ no I don’t have stomach issues I believe it’s my body punishing me for letting my body go down into advanced stage as if I eat a little more my body seems to punish me by not letting me sleep and I have to urinate a couple of times before eventually going off to sleep in the early hours !! I dident realise what was going on because of brain fog but I ve realised at last what’s been happening over the last couple of weeks why is my body punishing me so badly ? I I had to stop some snacks I was having some months back and now I can only eat the same foods at the same time everyday if I go over by a quarter of a carrot then I won’t go off to sleep as the small amounts of food has to be the same everyday is anybody else going through this ? Im worried I’m going to lose weight this has been going on for ages but months ago when I was going downhill into advanced stages I had to stop snacks etc I’m really worried about all this I was supposedly getting help from a nutritionist who assured me she knew about adrenal fatigue ! It turned out after two and a half years of seeing her she did nothing for me apart from prescribe vitamins and suggest I take saliva tests. I wish I’d known how adrenal fatigue progresses and you go downhill I’m in stage 3c now and it’s awful and isolating as you already know. Not being able to eat is terrible
Thank you! Merry Christmas to you and yours. I’ve only celebrated the most intimate of holidays for many years now. Isolation from abusive family is one of my triggers for AF originally. However, hubby and I really love to create a very involved holiday celebration. I might get that from Filipino background (as an aside Filipinos spend the most time on Christmas I think in the whole world 😂 it begins in September!) However I do get carried away, stay awake too late at night, forget to eat clean foods, drink enough water, etc.. that this is a good reminder for me to just slow down. I put a lot of energy and effort into making a miniature Christmas village on a large table. Felt so exhausted and normally that activity wouldn’t make me feel so tired but.. AF. I really need to slow down a lot. Anyway thank you again. I hope your holidays are magical and full of joy!
Hey there, so nice to hear from you . Wow, you have done a lot of healing. So good to hear this news. Oh this miniature Christmas village must be amazing. I did not know AFS was different from adrenal insufficiency. They sound exactly the same. It boggles me that you don’t have to take steroids for that.

@@SarahD-s4y I’m happy you will stop gluten . Please watch dairy as well. It’s a strange feeling with this illness that you can feel this disconnect with others. It is quite something. I felt very disconnected. I was like in a cocoon world in myself. Are you housebound?
@petra3049 yes it feels like I am constantly just living in my head and I'm working on getting out of it, and yes I suppose I am mostly homebound but I try not to be and don't want to be but it's becoming more frequent unfortunately.
@ there will be a lot of growth during this healing journey that is for sure. Do you have support ?
Do you take hydrocortisone? How do you control everything when you have to take this medication to control your emotions?
This hydrocortisone is to raise your cortisol. Once your cortisol starts to rise obviously with being monitored your moods should eventually start to regulate. Also, many of the other systems of the body as well. I did not have Addisons but I had very low cortisol almost flat so I was very ill. Are you seeing an endocrinologist? Are you eating well and staying hydrated. As you have seen this requires patience.

My mantra is, “ I am safe, I am healthy”-it doesn’t seem to be working
Hi Kathleen, I understand what you are saying. This is quite something and must stay dedicated to the healing process. Perhaps saying I am safe and my body is healing would be better for now, you have to change things up if you feel something may not be working for you. Everyone can try something that works for themselves. I can give only suggestions. This requires a great deal of patience. Must constantly work with the mind. I mean constantly. Doing things that help you to stay calm. I use to color in adult coloring books with markers. This was great focus work, staying in the lines. Listening to all soothing things. I became much more spiritual during my journey. I listened to Mooji initially and then Sadhguru. I don't know what you believe in but it is a good time to check out things that can help to soothe you . Also, beautiful music- I liked Snatam Kaur and Peter Kaur heart of the universe full album. Mooji also has beautiful music. Listening to Louise Hay, Eckhart Tolle. I had to find amazing things to help me to heal. Ajeet as well. I loved beautiful music. I also listened to a lot of nature sounds. This is a bear to deal with so we must do many things to heal this. Much love to you. You are not alone please know this. xoxoxoxo Petra
What is the best way to get out of fight, flight, freeze mode. I am working on staying calm. How did you retrain your brain?
Kathleen it was a dedication to doing many things to help myself. I threw everything at it that I could.. There were many strategies that I list in some of my videos. Can you try saying, Stop, Stop, Stop my brain is stuck in a rut and it's sending my body false messages. Also, another great mantra is, I am not my body, I am not even my mind. This helps to create some space between the mind and the body. What are you able to do at this point? Sending love and I am so sorry that you are ill. @petra3049 more important how did you stopped the fight flight.it.is hard to end it and it is draining.
@@petra3049 yes i take paracetamol but it does not do anything. My head hurts too much. It is terrible. I am a lost cause.
@petra3049 petra how did you finally get out of the fight flight hell?
@ Edwin so much is about staying positive , being grateful, listening to soothing things. Staying committed to the healing process. Believing you will heal. There is so much that is about the mind. Not giving up. I said so often. I just have to keep going. Do you have people that are supportive? How old are you Edwin ? Please know you are not alone. I will always get back to you as soon as I can. You are not alone. 💖💖Petra
Did you also had a disregulated nervous system?
So good to listen to this thoughtful video - Petra, you really do help us and encourage us to do the right things to recover. You will be celebrating ‘Thanksgiving’ tomorrow. I am in the UK so our celebrations are in a months time for Christmas. Enjoy your Thanksgiving - thank you as always ….. Cynthia 🌹💕💐
Cynthia I know how hard you are working to recover. Just watch the holidays as I know how hard it is for you to not be feeling well while going through them. Continue you focus on you okay. You will get there one step at the time. Lots of love, Petra
@@petra3049 Thank you Petra. It is so good that we have someone who has been through this, understands and has recovered. Your encouragement really helps. I am beginning to see some light at the end of the tunnel but l fall back by pushing myself on days when l have some normality. The Christmas holiday time is close - l know that l have to sit back and let it happen without involvement. Love to all sufferers and let’s all take Petra’s advice…..💕
Hi Petra, thank you for this. You help me to remember to look after myself and to continue to change my 'helper, solver, giver' urges that overtook my own wellbeing. You have grounded me again in my own body and I will now continue to mind my own energy first. The journey continues and the growth is the reward. Give thanks for yourself, you have a wonderful heart.
Hi Monica- So nice to hear from you and thank you for your kind words. The helper, solver, giver will still be there because that is part of who you are. However ,while going through this you must start to introduce boundaries and know that you caring for yourself or putting yourself first is not selfish it is self care. Only while I was going through this illness did I finally realize what a boundary was. These are so important for people like us. You must keep filling up your own tank first. Please check in and let me know how you are doing on your journey. You will get there one step at the time and learn so much along the way. xoxo Petra
Thank you Petra. Its indeed more emotional aswell.
Hi Katarina! So nice to hear from you. It is emotional for sure because we remember what we could do and how we use to be. I remember so clearly how for me everything felt so different. I just wasn't the same person that I use to be and I had to honor and acknowledge those feelings. How are you feeling these days? xoxo Petra
@@petra3049 Yes that's how it feels. Like im someone else. My adrenaline has subsided and im more tired instead. I drove to supermarket twice and to my own bloodwork apt. Sitting in the park in the sun 1 h. So its some improvement 🙏. Thank you for caring ⚘️
@ an improvement is to be celebrated with this illness . I know how hard that you had to work to get to this point. Amazing!! ❤️Petra
Hi Petra, thank you for the helpful advice. I'm being a bit more careful this Christmas .. yes people can't understand sometimes when we back away from doing things ... I hope you are doing well in yourself.
Hi David, It is so nice to hear from you! It is an interesting journey isn't it when you have to pay such close attention to just about everything. We have to take care of ourselves during these times. David how are you doing ? Wishing you all the best and sending love your way. xoxo Petra
@petra3049 Hi Petra. .. I make progress then have a setback as things seem to come along that knock me back still. Even a phone call I've had to make. . But the recovery time is shorter now. From weeks to days. I'm sleeping from midnight to 7am as well .. I used to be awake a lot more. I hope you are making even more progress and enjoying your life more.. I hope you have a nice Christmas....
David, I am very grateful of where I am at after what I went through. I feel very grateful that I made it and have recovered. This was quite something as you certainly know. This changed me as I am sure you also know what I mean with this statement. People have no idea what this is like. You being able to sleep longer , and your setbacks feel shorter that is also so great. Pay attention to your stress though as it is a signal that you have to regroup and do something more soothing for the system. Do a lot of gratitude it really does help the body with fight and flight responses in the body. That push you pay cycle has such a delicate line. The "knowing and awareness" being the watcher so closely. You are really moving forward now and I am so happy for you. Step by step...xoxo Petra
@@petra3049 Thank you for all of the helpful advice in your reply Petra.. I'll try to be even more careful and practice the thankfulness side of it more. I'm really pleased you have recovered so well and have been so careful in the process. Have a nice Christmas. David.
. Thanks for all of the helpful advice in your reply Petra. I will be even more careful with that stress feeling. Yes the illness has also changed me inside.. changed within by controlling the mind and emotions.. I found a new area to help myself this week .. I want to get completely well. Have a nice Christmas time Petra... It's nice to see a video from you.. David.
Great advice! Luckily, I’m staying home for the holidays hopefully stress-free. But as with my adrenal insufficiency, I’m still miserable. My back went out. Do I stress dose? Have happy holidays.
Do I stress dose? Could you explain this to me. I am so sorry that your back went out. You didn't need this. xoxo Petra
@ I had an adrenal crash. I’m in the hospital. In back still out.
There is the adrenalin pouch in that spot too😢 much love to You!
Much love to you too. How are you doing now? xoxo Petra
Did you take steroids at any point? If not, why not did the blood tests show that you didn’t have adrenal insuffiency. What’s the difference between adrenal fatigue and adrenal insufficiency
@@chriskontos5824 adrenal insufficiency is recognized by the medical model (Addisons disease) can do bloodwork that will show you have this. With Adrenal fatigue bloodwork will quite often be okay. Did not use steroids.
Hi Petra - its ratqueen again. May I ask about the adrenal breathing? are there any tips you can give me as i'm desperately struggling with adrenaline. i am bed bound and my nervous system is so extreme i jump from any noise and my body shakes uncontrollably when trying to calm down. May I ask what recommendations dr lam gave you for this? I know it's individual but i'm trying to get a rough idea of how much i should be doing it. I have extreme adrenaline 24/7 and i cant sleep or eat. it's unbearable. From my understanding it feel like it's not stimulating as much as possible? nothing really calms me down so i think this is the only thing that can help me now
hello there- I would do some focusing on the breath. It's very gentle. Lay on your back or sit up which ever is most comfortable. You are not going to change your breathing at all. You aren't going to hold it or make it any faster or slower. Do your regular breathing in and out and just focus on the breath going in and out. Have the inhalation go up your nostrils and exhale through your nostrils. Your thoughts will come in and don't judge them but just go back to your breathing. Focus on staying in the present moment of time- don't go back or forward in time, just right now this moment. Please try this. This is gentle and easy and helpful to relax the nervous system. You can do this often throughout the day because it's really just your natural breathing but you are focusing on it. Lots of love. Petra
Hi Petra, do you put the caster oil in a fridge? I bought 500mls of caster oil.
@@lovely1-k6z no doesn’t need to be in the fridge. Cool dry area in pantry or on shelf somewhere.
I bought organic Hexane free cold pressed castor oil. However, my opthalmologist said that it could pose a risk to my eyes if the bottles were contaminated. Contaminated bottles can cause infection in the eyes that lead to blindness. There aren't any FDA approved castor oil drops for the eyes in the US either. The oil is just sitting in my closet. I believe that oil would have beneficial results for dry eyes, because oil coats the eyes to keep tears from evaporating. It is just too bad that the pharmaceutical system would rather sell $600.00 drugs like Refresh and Cequa that just burned my eyes out instead of natural remedies like this.
I purchased the castor oil from a reputable company. This is what I did and many people will not feel comfortable with what I have done and I understand that. Many people who don't feel comfortable putting it in the eye can also put on eyelids. Sorry I didn't respond sooner I usually will get a notification on iphone but perhaps somehow I overlooked it. So sorry.. Oh yes about the FDA. xoxo Petra
Hi Petra, I swiped it across my eyes before going to bed. Next morning my eyes felt dry. I don't know if it's because it's not a good brand or because I swiped it across my eyes instead of inserting it in (dropper). It is cold pressed, hexane free, and Australian Certified Organic.
@@Lara-e1q Try it again a couple of times. Give it some time. Swipe enough on your eyelids.
Tell me, what do you do when you can’t pick up your arms when you can’t even lift a blanket off your shoulders do I stress those? Do I do a pain medication? Do I just sit there and cry? What do I do when you can’t move?
I am checking in on you and can you let me know if anything has changed.? I'm very sorry that sometimes my phone doesn't link up for some reason to my computer so it isn't responding to your question. What are you doing while you are trying to heal. Are you listening to anything soothing ?
@ thank you so much for your care and concern. I am doing OK minute by minute. I’ve come to the acceptance of that. Do what I can when I can. I went to a new endocrinologist waited four months to go. She knew nothing about adrenal insufficiency at the end of our meetings, I asked did we achieve anything and she said yes refills and my 9 o’clock here thank you see you in May. So I’ve just come to the realization only my wife, a complete stranger such as you knows what I’m going through. Would love to talk to face-to-face FaceTime zoom. I don’t do Instagram or Facebook. Thank you for your concern. How are you doing? I micros-stress dose it helps. But none of these endocrinologist understand stressing at all.
