The coal placement is actually determined on if you are baking, frying or broiling.
I am sorry Adam but you said to throw away all those charts for charcoal. The charts all tell you that you need 1/3 on the bottom and 2/3 on the top for an approximate 350 cooking range. Cowboy Kent will tell you that None of us that use charcoal are real cooks. But hey we all have to start somewhere. If you are lookin you ain't cookin and ya got to turn the pot 90 degrees at least every 15 min an the lid 90 in the opposite direction at the same time just my opinion. I learned how to D.O. cook with briquettes and then learned how to do the live fire cooking. I see what you are trying to get out in your video but those charts still apply even if you want to increase the temp regardless of the size of the briquets. Still Nice video and Don't Forget there Ain't no Lovin Like Dutch Oven Lovin!
@strongsadventures The reason why charts make it difficult is A lot of companies have now shrink the size of their burquettes. So I normally use B&B But if I use Kingsford I might have to double the amount. This is why I made this video as I had a lot of people request it because the charts were throwing them off. But if it works for you thats awesome👍
Adam I am really sorry. After rereading my comment it looked like I was being snark and condescending and for that I do apologize. I didn't realize after 2 years you only had 500 subs. Me and Rhonda might have to come back off of our 2 year vacation to promote your channel(you really should have more) . Please get into the Cast Iron Wednesday videos. They are an awesome group of folks and I think you would fit in.
@strongsadventures It's okay water under the bridge. To be honest I started this channel because I used to be a scout master and I miss teaching. I even volunteer for free for the Texas parks and wild life teaching a dutch oven class at lake corpus christi state park. I should probably dedicate more time to the channel. But I got too many irons in the fire.
@@T260. Haha tell us about that. That is why we haven't put out a video in 2 years. Real life does get in the way. I really would suggest that you look up the Cast Iron Wednesday folks. There are lots of recipes that we share and if you put your video out on Wednesday and tag it Castiron Wednesday you might get more views. We live in North east Texas Or what the tax people say North west Louisiana LOL.
@strongsadventures I will definitely look into that cast iron group. Thank you for the information. I was just camping up in northeast Texas this summer at Atlanta State Park.
Thanks for the video. A smart man learns from his own mistakes. A wise man learns from the mistakes of others. One other caution, salt water is corrosive. Make sure you have a well seasoned Dutch oven. And apply a good coating of oil and heat afterwards.
@verdexj160 You're welcome. I cleaned it out and Season did that very night.
It's just physics and chemistry. Salt applied to ice is an endothermic reaction which produces temperatures below freezing. It's the way old fashioned ice cream makers worked. I grew up eating the stuff. A problem with you doing this in a dutch oven is, you need to pour out the salt water or otherwise remove the salt water, and add more ice and salt. The ice cream machine had a vent tube that let the salt water flow out. MacGyver Mode activated. Use a siphon to remove the salt water, if you don't want to just carefully pour it out.
@dailyqwikbytes This was one of those urban legends to see if it actually would work. Ultimately I would definitely pick something better to make ice cream while camping.
@@T260. It will work if you do what I tell you. It's just inefficient. Like I said it's just physics and chemistry. If you expose the custard to subzero temperatures long enough it will inevitably congeal. I occasionally have used this method to chill cokes and beers quickly.
@@T260. A hand cranked version of the electric ice cream maker I described from my yoot will be adequate to make ice cream in the field. That's how it was done before an electric motor was added. But like I said, what you were doing would eventually work if you do it like I told you above, and below. At least I think the other comment will be below this.
@dailyqwikbytes There is a nice cream maker that I do want to try. It's a ball with a cylinder in the middle. that you kick around. I have 2 children, so this might be a more entertaining solution.
@@T260. Yes. That sounds fun!
Dude, I'm a bit lost on why you would use a Dutch oven or any metal vessel as your freezer. Metal...especially any sort of heavy cast metal is an extremely effective heat conductor/absorber. If you want to MELT ice or defrost frozen food, there are few ways that are better than to lay it in a Dutch oven or cast iron skillet. Consider changing to a small plastic paint bucket and tape some foam rubber around it. I have a hunch your result will be better.
@shyamdevadas6099 This one is kind of urban legend in the dutch oven community. A lot of people claim they have made ice cream this way. So I wanted to give it a shot. There are definitely a lot better ways of making ice cream when camping.
That's why I said it's inefficient, but not impossible. It will just take more ice and salt than say a wooden bucket would.
@@dailyqwikbytes I applaud your determination, dude. (Personally, I'd be sneaking away from the campsite to grab a pint of Ben and Jerry's at 7-Eleven. lol)
@@shyamdevadas6099 MacGyver (the original) is my Spirit Animal, Bro.
Very interesting.. most things I try in a dutch oven never turns out exactly right but it's always fun trying! Thanks for letting us watch!
@OzarkGuy I debated not showing this one but I think it's important to show failures too.
@@T260. For sure! If I didn't show fails I wouldn't have hardly any videos..haha
@@OzarkGuy That's a good attitude to have. Nothing's perfect.
@@T260. There is no "failure", really. You merely learned what you did, or more accurately, the way you did it, didn't work. Which means, if you're still interested, discover what does work. Start thinking that way, in all tihngs. Best wishes.
Hey man! Does your shirt represent fort Davis Texas? How do you spell most of my 10 years and many adult years at the fort Davis boy scout ranch...
My text messed up haha. I was trying to say I spent most of my teenage years and even many adult years at the fort Davis scout ranch.. will you ever involved with that? I live in Missouri now
@OzarkGuy I go camping all over the state of Texas. So I have state park shirts from every single place I go. I even volunteer for the Texas parks and Teach a dutch oven class. I really like the fort davis area And have camp there many times.
@OzarkGuy As far as boy scouts I have also been a firearms instructor for campK Right off of lake corpus christi
@@T260. Oh that's cool! I was born in the Sweetwater Texas area and raised in Odessa Texas.. I've been gone from Texas many years but I still go to those places a couple of times a year to see family.. I'm going camping this weekend for my next video I'm going to attempt to make a meatloaf in my Dutch oven for the first time, that's how I ran across you
@OzarkGuy Awesome good luck on the meatloaf. I've also discovered using two or more sheets of parchment paper on the bottom of the Dutch oven helps. It exhorbs some of the grease
I just found a Rome Waffle Maker at a Thrift Store for $10 today. Thanks for the video.

@@Mrhandfriends That one came out better than expected. And very few ingredients.

@Mrhandfriends We actually end up making it on our next camp out because of how easy it was. I'm always looking for easy recipes with short clean up. You guys should definitely try it. I would definitely recommend some ketchup with it though.
Dude thank you 🙏🏻 I have a Coleman 440 stove and I was confused on how to release the pressure, honestly I was terrified pressurized gas would come shooting out and set everyone on fire or something. On a side note I read on a website about older Coleman products that specific development went into the depressurizing technology inside the fuel cap… anything before the mid 60’s actually can shoot a pressurized flaming fuel jet if the cap isn’t replaced.
@heyseed2292 You're welcome.I'm glad some of my information was able to help you. Old Coleman gear was built to last. So I hope you get many more years out of your stove.
thanks! cozy video
Thank you for the video

I love our propane lanterns. We use one from the late 80's and another from the early 70's with the angled cone shaped globe. The coolest thing I've bought for them was the chain hooks that wrap around a tree. Great way to hang them if there's no stand or table space.
@AudioThrift I actually have a propane lantern with the cone shape globe. I don't dare use it as there's no replacement globes.
@@T260. Oh man… That’s a good point. I’d hate to break it and not be able to replace it. Maybe it’s time to invest in something new.
@AudioThrift I have a few lanterns that I've since retired. They are just shelf pieces. Some are just too rare to use. So I've done the same thing. And Invest in some new ones even though I like the old ones.
When I was in the Boy Scouts in the 60’s, we bought white gas at the local Phillips 66 station for about 25 cents a gallon. Try to find bulk white gas now. Darn near impossible. Even the Walmart camp fuel is $15.00 a gallon.
@lorinkramer5805 A lot of times what I use is ethanol free gasoline. It is a little bit harder on the generator so I have to replace the cardboard sleeve every two years on the generator. But I understand that most gas stations do not sell ethanol free gasoline. Where I live on the coast. It's quite common it's used for boats. It will normally run you about a dollar more than your normal gasoline.
رائع ياصديقي ، امتلك واحدا 200a ، وأعتمد عليه في رحلاتي
I think only this duel duel model is grey, i still see new lanterns in green. But this colour is cool, only downside is china globe 😅
@cjw1927 That is correct. The green and red lanterns can take camp feel Or gasoline with no ethanol in it. But. The gray ones can take the gasoline with ethanol And camp feel. The old ones are considered non dual fuel because Because they can't take gas with ethanol which is the most common. Great comment Most people do not know that.👍
Great tips, thanks!
@@ebutuoytm7560 your welcome 👍
The China made ovens are made out of Toyota bumprs!!LOL 😂
I worked at a Phillips 66 while a high schooler in the 70s. Cabin people would come for white gas pumped from a drum in the rear of the station. If I'm storing, I swish out the font with gasline antifreeze from the yellow bottle.
@@TonyTruth-s9z That's awesome. That's something you don't see nowadays.
Yamy yamy delicioso
I’d have put those cold eggs back on the skillet in that pork grease to get them warm again.
@EricsWormPlayground Normally I cook them at the same time. But it's easier doing them separately when filming a video.
LOL. Thanks but apparantly our defination of "camping" is far apart. But enjoy!
@jackwalker9492 I do tent camping but I can see if you're more into backpacking. This meal might be more difficult.
@@T260. Thank you regardless! Enjoy the outdoors. I live overseas now (I was infantry for a long time. No tents) and I stayed at my buddies campground in a tent for a few months. Across the street was some dormitories for foreign students who could work on a student visa for a season. Some would come down and sit by the fire and swim at night. Watch the firefly show. At first, the dumb phones were flying with pictures. Eventually, the forgot about them and became human again. The power of the outdoor life is a real gift and you enjoy!
Good stuff thanks for sharing!!!!!!!

No true deep south southerener , would ever put sugar in their cornmeal batter or make it that thin.
Everybody can do it the way they want to. there's no set rules. My wife's family's from mexico so I like to mix in some of their Culture as well. And one of those things is sugar in cornbread.
Please dont walk in the grass in the south west U.S. because you may run into a rattlesnake.

If I was going to buy a new dutch oven I would go with Lodge even though there are at least 2 Australian companies that make ovens that are just as good. I have several vintage ovens that are nicer than a modern Lodge. Two are Lodge, one is Wagner, two are made in South Korea and one is from Taiwan. And then is the granddaddy of all of them, a 1860s 30" Noyes and Nutter that was made for the Union Army.
Not sure I'd even bother buying new if it was still great tbh. People sell old premium cast iron for cheap all the time because it got some surface rust in storage or the enamel is dirty
Lodge is the only cast iron Dutch oven I would own.
same here
The most dangerous animal I ever encountered while camping in Texas was this crazy drunk guy.
Yeah I got to admit I have ran into a few of those as well.
I read about this on Zatêc, the read says comes from Czechia and Slovakia to what I understand maybe from the Moravian Wallachia area when still one country. Kolo means circle. And they treat it as a pastry. I do recall the attendant to funny said “ Kolache” while handling one and “Kolache(s)” when handles two or three. Fun fact, we learn there that Kolache was a Texas thing!
That's amazing thank you for that information. That's amazing how far that dates back I would have never guessed.
