EXPLORING remote INLET on a FOLDABLE kayak
There are so many gorgeous spots to kayak around Mallacoota in East Gippsland. Sou West Arm is a spot just out of town on the Mallacoota Inlet.
There's a short drive in on a dirt road (can be a bit bumpy after rain) that ends at a small carpark. There are portable toilet facilties at the carpark.
100 metres down a dirt path will bring you to the picnic area (table/bench) and the Sou West Jetty. The Jetty is a lovely spot where you can walk out to the end & soak up the ambience. There is a small sandy beach next to the Jetty & this is where I launched from. Very easy!
The Sou West Arm looks like it would provide a bit more shelter on a windy day. On the day I paddled there, it was so calm & the water was like glass.
The paddle was not very long but I chose to paddle away from the inlet into the smaller section. It ended at a dead end but the scenery & wildlife was lovely. I did accidentally scare the flock of cormorants at the end of this section (didn't mean to & was trying to turn around before they flew off). It is their haven so when paddling in an area with wildlife, be aware that they will not want to stay if you are there.
Anyway, it was a beautiful spot and highly recommended for a peaceful paddle in this remote location of the country.

EASY paddle on the WERRIBEE RIVER
มุมมอง 1409 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Riverbend Historic Park is an easy spot to kayak. The parking was easy and the water was very still. The water level was down so access to the bank required climbing down to the riverbank. It wasn't difficult but would be much easier when the water level is higher so you could access from the kayak launch. All in all, the Werribee river at this location was nice but nothing to rave about. I...

What do I think of my Oru Inlet Kayak after 12 months?? You'll have to watch to find out! This is the only kayak I've ever had so I can't really compare it to anything else apart from hardshell kayaks I've rented in the past. In this video, I'll give you an honest opinion of what I like & dislike about my Oru inlet while I enjoy a fabulously calm & beautiful paddle at Cannons Creek in Westernpo...

10/10 MAGICAL kayaking spot in EAST GIPPSLAND

If you're searching for a true wilderness experience, Gipsy Point (near Mallacoota) in Far East Gippsland is a definite must see! Gipsy Point is positioned where two rivers meet (Wallagaraugh & Genoa) inland from Mallacoota Inlet. On this day, I set off from the Gipsy Point boat ramp and headed off down the arm of the Genoa River. There was so much to see and it was super quiet!! Even though it...
TWO RIVERS FOR THE PRICE OF ONE (Ovens & King)

I had a quick opportunity to paddle in Wangaratta over the Melbourne Cup (unofficial) long weekend so found a spot just where the King & Ovens rivers meet. Interesting spot! Not too many places to launch where there wasn't many people about. The park closest to the bridge was promising but the beach was taken up by people fishing... but we could see a beach across the river which looked better....

What kayak do you have or recommend for this trip?
Love your videos!
Great your enjoying the boat. I have one over 3 years old that has been thrown about some rough places, it craves the water, any calm water.
Fantastic!! I'm so looking forward to some warm weather here so I can get back out again! My Oru has been stuck in a box since our state went into winter (and it's been a really cold one!!) 😀
Great video!
Thanks! This was such a gorgeous place. One of the very best areas to kayak in Victoria, Australia (I think!) 😀
I just found your channel - it’s great! I bought an Oru Inlet about two months ago, and I love it.
Awesome!! Orus are fabulous aren't they! So versatile and easy to take anywhere. I haven't posted on this channel for a while but it's winter here & I've been putting my energy into our other main channel. Will get back out there again soon making more videos so hope you'll stick around 😀
Great view of the stingray.
Thanks! I had no idea if I had it on camera at the time. Such a magnificent creature 😀
I miss the Australian bush.. so happy to see it again. I think you’re the first channel I’ve seen using the Oru in Australia!
There's a few of us out there which is great 😀 I still get head turns & comments which is funny! People often come up to me asking about my Oru. It's such a fun kayak for travel!!
Great spot another nice video . That's the kind of place we are always looking for to go for a paddle or kayak camping . exploring up the creeks and into the bays is always scenic and interesting . If we get down that way we will definatly go for a paddle there
I think you'd love it there! The whole area is such an adventure. So many places to explore!!
That looks like the spot I've been looking for, I have a 2 seater kayak and enough room for our jackRussell which takes front seat have to put it on our places to go list, great video
@@johnhynd8037 You would have lots of fun paddling around this area
Thanks for posting. Looks like a lovely place and plenty of birdlife.
It was such a lovely surprise! Such pretty vegetation & the birdlife there was great 😀
Great video . I always look where you're paddling on google maps next time you go there chuck a leftie onto woolshed creek if the tide is right , you will find some great nature there . The side creeks and estuaries are alway the most interesting places to explore . often more natural undisturbed nature up the side creeks . Happy paddling !
Thanks for the tip! 😀 I'll check that out! My favourite places I've paddled so far have been where there is lots of wildlife & untouched bushland. If they like it, I'll like it! 😀
@@meandmyoru yes I always find my places to paddle on google maps . the more trees and natural landscape the better . I try to avoid adjoining farmland although sometimes its really nice in those places if its nicely tree lined . Ive been hoping you would go and explore this lake around here . I could spend weeks there exploring . Candlebark camping area . check the locality out on google maps . looks like a great spot
It's finally warming up on the other side of the planet. Hope to get in the water in the next few weeks. I love the nature shots as well. My complements to the B-Roll cameraman!
Thank you so much!! I was wondering if anyone wanted to see wildlife & birds that live in the area. I love seeing everything!! My husband was busy birdwatching while I was paddling on the water so I have passed on your compliments to him for his b-roll. 😀 I want to add in more of that content so thanks for the feedback! ❤
Did you only go to the weir and back though? I prefer launching from the riverbank in Riversdale Drive and paddling away from the weir, more overhanging trees with birds and bees (literally a nest of feral bees high up in a branch overhanging the river) a mudlark nest, saw Nankeen night herons there, a darter and a cheeky lorikeet peeking out of a tree hollow, less of an urban feel after 1 or 2kms in that direction, as it winds around through more agricultural areas, so you stop seeing houses, there was a kangaroo on the bank further upriver also. Also an odd palm tree here and there and some prickly pears that obviously aren't native though! I feel the same way about crossing town though, would have to be really worth it if more than a 2hr return drive for a morning/day paddle.
Thanks for the tip! I did paddle up the river & probably made it close to Riiversdale Drive but then turned around. It certainly was more interesting round the bends but as I was by myself & left my husband birdwatching back at the park, I didn’t want to go too far without knowing what was ahead. Have you launched off K Road before?? I think that would be superb on a nice day! 😊
Thoroughly agree, it's nice enough but the lower section of the river from Werribee South upstream to the golf course is wilder and more interesting.
Yes I’ll have to investigate Red Cliffs. I’ve been down there a few times but where is best to access with a kayak??
@@meandmyoru It is possible with your folding kayak that you could follow the track used by fishermen to the river bank from the top of K Road cliffs. Otherwise, the beach near the boat ramp is where I always put in. It is a six kilometer paddle up to the cliffs from there.
@@chrisstockman904 I'll have to try it out! The path down to the river at K Road is a bit steep but I agree that it definitely would be possible. I'd have to find a gap in the reeds 😀 Would be fun though!
The only time I have ever seen a sacred kingfisher was on this part of the river. Early morning paddle.
@@chrisstockman904 Brilliant! 😀They are such pretty (and fast) little birds. Great to know they enjoy the river at this spot! Early morning would be a really nice paddle there!
Short and sweet . Nice to get out for a paddle anywhere on a nice day and it looked like a great day for a paddle !
I agree! This was a few weeks ago but it was a lovely day 😊 Always fun!
Nicely captured 🙂
I like weird stuff underwater 😀
@@meandmyoru Always nice to see!
Its great how ayaking can get you into some really bice bushland even in a city . nice little video . happy paddling
Thanks! 😀 It's true! Even though the roads around the area are packed with cars, the river was really peaceful (once away from the flying foxes of course! 😂)
Is this a easy enough paddle upstream in tjis part of the river?
Sure! 😀 I've paddled here before when there was an incoming tide. Going against it was a little difficult but it wasn't too hard. I wouldn't want to be paddling against the current if it was an outgoing tide though as a kayaker could get sucked out to sea if not strong enough.
It's not a river but an inlet so it's a spot where the tides rule from both sides. Interesting but best to go when the tide is low & incoming.
There's a saying I heard when I wanted to learn guitar and was looking for my first one, "What guitar should you get? One that makes you excited to play." So when looking at kayaks, what kayak should someone get? One that makes them excited to paddle. I love my Oru (Haven) for storage and portability. I can go solo or take my wife out tandem. I'm planning to get another so we can each take a kid out too, once they have some swimming skills 😊 Toss the kayaks in the back of the car and take the family out to a lake. No big racks, no need for a truck, no trailer. I wouldn't trust it on rocks and stones, but we slid over some submerged logs without any damage. The hull has a good amount of deflection to slide over top without gouging into the plastic. Overall, very happy with it and looking forward to getting back out in the spring!
Exactly!! 😀 Oru kayaks are so versatile and they're fun!! ... and they look great too!! I think that's what makes these kakaks so great. It's that (like you) they are easy to transport, store and take the whole family out for a paddle at any time. Happy paddling!! 😀
What a wonderful analogy!
Hi, I really enjoy your videos. I looked at the Oru products but was worried about durability so went with a Swedish modular kayak that breaks down into carryable bits. It is a compromise but works for me. Western port looks perfect, where did you put the kayak in? Can recommend Lakes Entrance for a sheltered paddle. All the best Katelin
Thanks so much Katelin!! I'd love to know what brand you bought?? I'm quite fascinated with all the clever companies that make modular kayak designs out there. 😀 Cannons Creek has a beach that is exposed at low tide. Great for launching! So easy! Where abouts in Lakes Entrance would you recommend launching from??
We launched off the main street at Lakes Entrance at the little beach the kayak rental shop Venture Out uses. I bought a Point 65 Mercury kayak from Paddle Zone. Also got the extra bit that makes it a tandem. I mainly kayak on the Yarra and this plastic kayak is durable and can take the knocks from submerged logs etc. needs a bit of space for storage but can get it without a struggle in my hatchback. Happy paddling
@@KatelinMorris-o1x oh yes I've seen some videos about those! They look great! Definitely needs more space to pack in a car but very robust. I love the look of the Pakayak too (so expensive... and heavy!) but amazing design. I'll have to try out the spot at Inverloch one day (we're actually nearby this weekend but it's so windy & hot I didn't take my kayak with me).
Nice lil review . They really do seem to be great for the niche they fill and for what they are designed for . If i was short on storage space I would definitely get an Oru
Thanks! It's definitely not for the more adventurous types but for people like me who just want a relaxing paddle whenever they go away on a trip somewhere, it's quite perfect 😀
thumbnail looks like a shark
haha! it does a bit 😀
Nice bush kayaking spot . Must have been great to get back on the water on such a beautiful day too
it was a real treat! really happy to get back out paddling after such a long break. so lucky with the weather too. it was perfect 😀
Good to see that you're back on the water. Looks like a lovely spot.
thanks! 😀 yeah it was really great! i could have stayed out there much longer but i could hear all the people waking up and heading down to the lake. I liked being out there by myself when it was super quiet. will have to go back again another time & do it again!
I hear you, the best thing about being in nature is the peace and solitude.
@@chrisstockman904 i think that's why i like kayaking alone.... so i can just enjoy the peace & quiet at my own pace ☺
Looks like a really nice place to be paddling!
yes it was fabulous!! so lucky to get weather like that up there. it's very unpredictable 😀
Will it float? If it doesn't the company wouldn't exist 🤷
12 months on & my Oru is FABULOUS!! Love this kayak!! 😀
I'm planning to take my young kinder out on the water this summer. I've been showing them some of your videos to let them know what kayaking is. I don't think we'll ever travel to the other side of the planet to paddle, but they want you to know they said, "hi." Happy paddling!
That's so nice!! Please say hi back from me!! 😀 Very exciting to hear my videos are being seen all the way across the world! I'm sure your kids will have a really fun time on the water. I'll have to make more videos now! 😀 (you've inspired me)
What do you mean, no monsters! You're right in saying it's easy to forget that you're in a major city, apart from the freeway bridge. I like the paddle from Bellbird down to Studley Park.
haha! I have no idea why I said that! 🤣 I think it was because I'd been watching videos of people kayaking with alligators! I haven't been down to Studley Park yet. I really like kayaking with the flying foxes so I always go up that way.
I have paddled Anglesea river many times. The river rarely breaks through to the sea and changing water levels are caused by flow from upstream. There is very little current and no tidal influence. I usually launch at the beach end and have never been unable to pass under the main road bridge. It looks imposing but there is enough clearance. The river is at its best early morning and evening when it is quieter and the birdlife is prolific. I have spent hours in the little channels around the park. Another great paddle nearby is Painkalac creek at Airies Inlet 15 minutes further down the road. Not as broad but you can paddle a greater distance.
Thank you so much for the tips!! 😀 I really like 😀Aireys Inlet so I'll definitely check that spot out. And I'll have to brave it & go under the bridge at Anglesea next time too!
another nice little video 👍
Thanks! 😀 Hopefully I'll get far more videos this year. I've missed quite a few paddling opportunities as I keep injuring myself 🤣
Wow!
it's so much fun to paddle with them! 😀 I go there quite often
@@meandmyoru I can imagine! First time I see footage like this.
@@AirOnTheWater Cool!! 😀
Nice little vid . Yep sots like that are my go to spots , water surrounded by forest and wilderness . Looking at the map I could spend days kayak camping and exploring that waterway . Hopefully I get the chance one day
it was gorgeous!! if you do get a chance to visit this area, you'd love it! so much to explore!!
A nice little paddle .It looks like there could be plenty more to explore around there too
Definitely! The rivers are nice... the difficult part was finding a spot to get down to the river easily with a kayak.
looks like it has real potential . In a proper plastic kayak it wouldn't be a problem . although your kayak is probably way more durable than you think . those logs would be pretty soggy and soft and not very sharp . I love paddling in places full of birdlife like that . maybe try going out there again after some decent rain might be a little more inviting . on google maps it looks like its about 7 klms across so would be a lovely day paddle to explore Thanks for the vid . check out some of mine if you get a chance
It really would be a great place to explore more! I'm sure there must be a better spot to start than where I was. The birdlife was fabulous! I'm wondering if the boat ramp is a relic of the days when the area was flooded & called Lake Mokoan?? I'll definitely pop over & check out some of your videos 😀
wow finally ! I have been looking forward to another vid from you guys . awesome vid , thanks :)
Gosh thank you!! I'm so happy to be getting back out there now the weather is warming up! Thank you so much for watching!! 😀
It's delightful to see you still enjoying the waters. I got to take my Oru out with my wife a few times this summer, but thinking next year I may get another Oru so we can duffle our kids and not have to worry about finding a babysitter. Winter is rolling in here, but I imagine it's gotta be warming up in Australia. Hope you get some great adventures this summer!
Just saw your message so sorry for the late reply! The Oru's are fabulous aren't they!! I wish my husband could find a kayak that he feels comfortable to use as I'd love to kayak together. I'm sure your kids would love it!! I'm so glad that it's getting warmer here! (but hopefully not tooooo warm too soon!). Winter kayaking was okay but there wasn't not too many calm sunny days to choose from so should be more fun to come as summer kicks in! Thanks so much for watching!! 😀
Hi nice video, where did you get your kayak from , looks lightweight sturdy ?? model name Thanks
Thank you so much for watching!! Sorry for the delay in replying!! My kayak is an Oru foldable kayak. The model is the Inlet. Very lightweight but built really well. So easy to carry around & feels really stable on the water. Highly recommended! 😀
Thanks for info I looked them up and it looks a great kayak, I have an inflatable one at moment which does there job but might invest in this one. @@meandmyoru
@@Outside1s3Ree I've had my Inlet since February this year and it's been great. It's a kayak that is great for flat water. 😀 I just love that I can throw it in the car & take off somewhere for a paddle!
awesome! might head to Tidal River on Saturday if I can be bothered with the drive, looks very nice for a paddle, or just local on the Yarra Studley Park@@meandmyoru
It will be super busy down there this weekend!! Really difficult to find parking even on a normal weekend. But it is always beautiful and as least you can get away from all the people on the river. If it was me, I'd save the trip for after school holidays to ensure a more peaceful experience.😀@@Outside1s3Ree
love your videos ! was excited to see another one pop up. yay !
Gosh! Thank you so much! ❤ I'm just happy to finally have been somewhere really nice! 😀 and to get some lovely calm weather
My wife and I each have an Inlet and have been enjoying them. I consider the backpack essential to carry the boats down to the water for a paddle. About 1/4 miles each way and just the strap was not comfortable at all. The gel seat makes a longer trip tolerable. We use the air bags front and back as you do. We have used many kayaks but as we get older and travel with our Prius these allow us to keep bringing our kayaks with us and not have to lift them onto the car roof.
Thanks so much for commenting! (sorry for the delay in replying!!) I agree about the backpack now! It's been really handy to transport in the car (we recently bought a 4x4 and I even use the straps from the bag to hold it down in the back). It's been great to walk the kayak down to the water & I agree that it's far better than a shoulder strap. Great bag!! 😀 So glad you're enjoying your Inlets!
Thank you for the review, so glad that you liked the DexShell Wading Socks 👍
oh hello! 😀 how funny you saw this! (not my intention but isn't that nice!). The knee length wading socks are fabulous!! I hope other people buy them as they solved my major problem of paddling in winter!! Just keeping my feet dry is brilliant!! And when a bit of sun hits them, they warm my feet up too! Awesome product!! Thanks for stocking them! 😀
It's like walking on a bicycle lane.
it was!! I really felt like I was in the way. I think there should have been more signs & a map informing anyone on the water which direction to kayak to avoid the rowers. When I was looking at the buoys at water level, I couldn't see the lanes, just lots of buoys & couldn't quite figure out what was going on until I got in way too far.
I remember, I appeared in the rowing course during the race! That was a big shame! Those bouys remind me the old joke: - Holmes, when you see thousands of stars above, are you thinking of the endless Universe? - No, dear Watson. I am thinking, someone stole our tent!
@@HEKOT77 LOL! 🤣 Brilliant saying!!
How did you find the tide? It can be verrrrry intimidating in those parts
I think I may have just been very lucky when I turned up. The tide was coming in when I arrived. The current was pretty strong and I could see it so I paddled against the tide and once the tide was fully in it became quite calm (still was a bit of a current on the far side). Yes I'd be cautious if the tide was going out! Could be really easy getting sucked out to sea and really difficult to get back to shore.
Nice! That is one tall backpack :-)
it looks really big but I'm quite small 😀
@@meandmyoru 😀Saw a stock photo with it with someone else and still looks taller than most backpacks I have for inflatable kayaks 🙂
@@AirOnTheWater oh yeah! Big... but not heavy which is great for me! And quite comfortable too.
Nice video I watched it in 2x speed still chilled and relaxing . Had been camping there a few years ago was nice to see it from the river view , thanks
haha!! 2x speed would have been funny 😃 I loved Tidal River.... been one of my favourite spots so far!!
came here to check out the socks not sure i can justify $100 for socks but its a great solution for winter paddling . Getting freezing cold wet feet kind of puts me off paddling in the winter maybe some wetsuit booties might be a cheaper solution idk . Looks like a great spot the great thing about kayaking is you can always paddle away from annoying land based people . I go paddling for the solitude just you the water nature and your boat . although its great to kayak with a friend too The cobweb thingos that was a weird phenomena .I love how nature throws things at us that is just so absurd ,weird, mindboggling ,unpredictable .They were kind of spooky maybe they are the mysterious WARANGA BASIN sprites or ghosts that's always talked about in the local, museums, bars ,historical societies and ghost hunting groups around Nice vid too was informative and chill to watch
Welcome & thanks for subscribing!!! 😃 (even if it was just to check out the socks! 🤣) I thought about wetsuit booties but they are mostly ankle length and I tend to walk my kayak into deeper water so needed something knee high. I have to say the cost outweighs missing out on a nice time out on the water! On this occasion, I managed to paddle away from the annoying people... but they were in boats and kept following me! Couldn't really get away from them and they were a bit dodgy so that was a bit of bad luck. Would have been superb if I'd been able to get totally away from them. Yeah those cobwebs were super weird. I like the idea that they are mysterious spirits/ghosts! 🤣 Would explain a lot!!
yep about the price of the socks I have to buy 2 pairs one for my wife too so its $200 bucks for me , bloddy yobbos in boats following you gee that's a bit rough lol almost as bad as jet skis doing laps nearby
@@sprintershepherd4359 oh yes that's when it gets a bit pricey! and.... jet skis!! Don't get me started on those! 🤣
yobbos can turn up anywhere, its the luck of the draw Nice calm day, it can get messy there on a breezy day as its pretty open and exposed.
I totally agree! Most of the time I can paddle away from them 😄 It really was a lovely spot to paddle when calm like this day but yeah I've seen it on a windy day on another trip & there were large waves breaking on shore!!
