I HUNTED friends across the CAIRNGORMS
My brother and a group of his mates went hiking in the Cairngorm mountains... I thought it would be fun to try and track them down without them knowing... 3 days. 45 Miles. Some great food and booze. And of course A HEAVY PACK! Enjoy!

Hiking across Knoydart - Inverie to Glenfinnan
มุมมอง 7K2 ปีที่แล้ว
March 2022, myself and 3 mates hiked across Britain's last wilderness, the Knoydart peninsula in north west Scotland. We took the ferry to Inverie and hiked 3 days to the Glenfinnan viaduct, camping one night and spending two other nights in bothies. We cooked up some epic food, drank far too much and experienced some of Scotlands most rugged and challenging scenery!

    Did the highland way before becoming a hillwalker. You seem to like all the comforts of home, a fire, bottle of wine, a ton of food. Personally I would never carry wine, just enough water to drink till I camp which will be near a water source, dehydrated food. For 3 season use if doing the WHW, would bring the Hilleberg Anjan 2, nice and spacious, light, not bothered by wind or rain. An alternative to you pack would be a 2 wheel trailer with a belt that goes roundyour waist. If you decide to go hillwalking, making a fire won't go down well with farmers, or collecting wood such as branches for a fire.

    • @rorymchenry373
      @rorymchenry373 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hahaha yeah a trailer would be nice!! Honestly I’m not much better when I go hillwalking, I still like to carry a heavier pack if it means I’ve got some comforts to enjoy. And well controlled fires are permitted in Scotland as long as you a respectful of the land, keep them small and leave no trace. I personally think it makes a huge difference to sit by a fire at night after a long day hiking…

    The West Highland Way is 100 miles long. That is basically the range of walking four marathons back to back. It is also combined with some very serious elevation and some fairly tricky paths. It is the best and the worst of hiking. I regularly camp at locations on the West Highland Way and it is hilarious to watch people do it. 99% of them cheat. Seriously .... nearly everyone cheats. I have sat there watching the portage services arrive and set up the tents prior to the walkers arriving. Then watched them backslap each other for their heroic performance in the heated communal through-hiker kitchen. Its literally a low grade version of Everest tourism. Congratz if you really did it mate.

    • @rorymchenry373
      @rorymchenry373 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Haha yeah I encountered a lot of other walkers doing it with luggage courier services - personally I have no issue with it, a lot of them were older and probably less able to carry 5 days worth of kit but wanted to experience the beautiful landscape anyway. And a nice way to do it! But there definitely is something special about setting off from Milngavie with everything you need to survive on your back and reaching Fort William having carried it all yourself. It is much harder than I anticipated but I would recommend it to anyone, however they want to do it!

    If your stove has a preheater tube, invert the canister. The gas is liquid in the cold and inverting it feeds the liquid which the reheater turns to gas. Or take a petrol or alcohol stove. This was a fun video, though I think you are a little nuts. All good though. I would have been delighted to see you turn up in the middle of nowhere, a) you have wine, b) you know how to cook. (but please tell me you didn't throw the pasta water away before the meal was finished, that's what creates that glossy texture, (and eggs). But as you were in Scotland, smoked salmon would be a good substitute for anchovies). The highland ponies were really nice, people mistakenly always think of Shetlands when they think about Scottish ponies. The late Queen did a lot to promote the breed. Fantastic, thick set strong animals and the ones that would have been used by the clans historically. The bothies look great, I almost want to head North and stay in them. But then I remember that I actually don't like living without central heating. But watching your videos one can dream that one is a different person to what one has learnt they are. You do make it look attractive even when you are struggling. I live in the South like you, (though further South), it's strange to think that we are connected to this "land of ice and snow", and then you can jump on a train back to London. Must be hard to adjust to the contrast? More videos please.

    • @rorymchenry373
      @rorymchenry373 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thankyou! Don’t worry, the pasta water went into the dish! Most people tend to just take dehydrated prepackaged camping meals on multi day treks but I just love cooking, especially in the great outdoors and so am happy to carry the extra weight of ingredients (though I know I’m in the minority on this!) Bothers are a fantastic way to experience the Highlands. They offer great shelter and also a wonderful place to meet like minded people and share some stories and a drink or two. I think everyone is capable of getting out into nature, even if we are conditioned to think we need home comforts. Even for one night out, we can endure some uncomfortable conditions but the reward is being out in a beautiful landscape. I highly recommend it if you get the chance!

    Hi Rory, I am also off to Dartmoor, hopefully tomorrow. It is not far for me as I am from Dorset. I would be interested if you could let me know where to get hold of wine in a can! Best wishes, Paul

      I found Beefsteak Malbec in a can in Booths in Penrith but I think most waitroses will probably do it too! Have a good Dartmoor trip!

    Never underestimate the WHW - it is tough. My friend and I completed it in 5 days...and we were a mess at the end....and we have often been hiking over the years, on and off. With hindsight, we should have taken 7 - 8 days to walk it...and with less weight. Some of the paths are good...other paths are really rough on the feet....and the route along Loch Lomond is damn hard work, more like scrambling than hiking. I recommend it to anyone, it's a great experience and a great way to see Scotland - and we met some great people along the way. However, if you're not an experienced hiker, then do some research and invest in proper equipment...and do some training before..i.e. walk a few kms around the local park with your packed rucksack to get an idea. Four seasons in one day, I kid you not....so be prepared...and also important, when hiking from May to September, always have a midge head net with you.

      Thanks! Yeah the bevvies certainly help at the end of a hard days walking! And that terrain is very tiring on the feet, I can’t believe you did it twice!! I’ve just returned from another Scottish adventure and there will be a video soon so keep an eye out! Cheers! 🍷

    Hello again Rory-loved the Pinot Grigio and great food vibe! Personally, if I am hungry , I don't mind if the rice is mixed or separate.

      Hi Rory, I love your channel and I hope that you don't mind more thoughts. I have a Jetboil and if I am trying to save weight on a multiday trek, I boil 1 lire of water-half goes into my dehydrated meal and the other half goes into a hot drink . I guess that I am a 'bit of a lightweight' when it comes to trekking but like you, I always have a bottle of wine with me!

      @@paulbendall6229 I’m always happy for more thoughts on this! I’ve just been on a multiday hike but it was very last minute so didn’t have time to prepare any dehydrated meals but will be doing some more soon and might look at a ‘complete meal’ type option that requires zero prep and just boiling water. I’ve recently discovered red wine in a can which could be a game changer!
