    You need to learn and use some other knots… the clew, spar and the loop around the bolt would all be better served using bowline knots instead… just a suggestion. Also the threading of the sail to the mast was far too tight. It would be much better served by loops at each of the grommets to keep it from binding and allowing the sail to spin and move more freely around the mast. Beyond that, very nice work on the spar and mast… once you get the bugs out I’m sure you’ll be happy with your rig!… nice video, thanks for sharing!

    Love the boat, but I gotta tell you, man...the music wrecked the experience for me! It reminded me of being back in school, where the teachers always had some loud distracting music playing while they taught, to overpower their words, in order to make sure that the learning experience for us students was minimal at best. But like I said... love the boat!

    My solution to the same issue with my sprit rig: I drilled out the mast step at a smaller diameter than the mast (in my case, at 1 inch), glued a matching 1-inch hardwood plug into the foot of the mast that extended into the mast step, and dropped two nylon washers into the bottom of the mast step to avoid contact between the bottom of the mast and the top of the mast step and ease rotation; then I leathered the mast partner (3/4-inch solid wood) to fit the diameter of the mast and greased the leather, initially with tallow and then with petroleum jelly. The leather bearing surface spreads the stress on the wood of the mast and the mast rotates quite easily, with no damage to the mast. A plywood deck at the mast hole could be made thicker to increase the bearing surface by gluing on drilled blocks of plywood above and/or below the hole and then leathering the hole-or lining the hole with a short section of PVC pipe the same diameter as the mast and greasing it (or not)-though I have not tried the PVC alternative.

  • @outbackgearforu

    Captain Pete Culler who wrote several books on traditional sails ,explains that the sprit rig requires a rotating mast to prevent the sail from binding to the mast,which should be lubricated with tallow,another traditional item. They should also have vertical seams in the sail if it’s a big sail as this makes it set better .

    • @fredbalster3100
      @fredbalster3100 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Pete Culler also laced the sail on the mast differently to prevent binding when lowering the sail. If you don't lower the sail then the way you did it would probably work just fine. 😊

  • @robertmstarr9028
    @robertmstarr9028 ปีที่แล้ว

    First, two questions: 1. What is the purpose of the two plywood rings you epoxied to the mast above the mast step (I haven't found the answer in your other videos)? 2. Have you considered epoxying some small spacers (4?) into the top inside of the mast step to reduce the play without creating significant friction (which might be reduced with a bit of wax on occasion)? I'm drawing plans for a dinghy I can load into the back of my pickup, and your videos on sail, mast, mast roller, and tiller have been very helpful.

      Thank You for subscribing and for your kind comment. I'm actually in North Port. Got hit pretty hard by hurricane Ian. Lost my dinghy but found it after a couple of weeks a hundred yards or so down stream, once the waterways got back to normal. It was mostly buried in silt but sustained very little damage. Great test for its construction. Like to see your project once it's under way and also completed. God speed with your project.

    Great video - I got a really good understanding of the overall process. One question - how did the non-skid surface work out? When you were applying the substance to create the texture on the deck, it looked like you added very little. I probably would have been more heavy handed. Was it enough?

    • @yvindholtan8596
      @yvindholtan8596 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your comment! The non-skid process worked great. After it was set, I vacuumed the deck and it looked and worked great. Good luck with your project. As you may know, our area was devastated by hurricane Ian. I lost my dock and when it was all over my dinghy was gone. I fly a drone and after several attempts to locate my dinghy I found it down stream mostly submerged in silt but very little damage. Once my house is back in order I will post a video on how I found it and how I brought it back to life and looking like new. Thanks again.
