Actually all the characters notice the resets, just to a smaller extent. If you replay the game after doing the Pacifist Route the characters talk to you like you remind of them of someone which makes no sense for characters like Papyrus and Undyne since they never saw a human before.

I think the clever thing about undertale is if you do the pacifist route first it's a lot of fun. A few challenging battles--but mostly fun and jokes. When you do the genocide run it's deliberately not fun. Challenging yes, at times even epic. But not "fun" and the game rubs that in your face as often as it can. And that's why it feels bad. You know the game is right, you don't have to play that route you chose to. You're not really any different from Flowey in the end.

I think a large part of the reason Undertale fans are so horrible about backseating is because almost every bit of dialogue and narraion in Undertale tells something about at least one of the characters, and there are SO MANY random little bits of dialouge and narration, so people are super desperate to for letsplayers to see as much of that dialogue as they can. Not trying to excuse the backseating behavior just explaining why I think it happens

i hope youve played enough indie games with combat to feel comfortable killing enemies again lol, assuming hollow knight didnt help you build your own framework of whether or not to feel weird about killing enemies. its not _just_ whether or not the enemies "matter", because the game could be making you kill some no-name goons (dont laugh at that), and if theyre human/sapient individuals then it doesnt change the fact youre being a senseless murderer. its not exactly gonna punish you for doing that though unless theres explicitly ways to avoid murder. so when there isnt a diplomatic option, the only thing youre left with thinking is what the actual context of the story is. if youre an evil character or an unfeeling killing machine, then of course the gameplay doesnt plan on punishing you for just- playing the game the intended way. unless they want to narratively punish you with some plot twist to guilt trip you, but if theres no diplomacy in the game, then its not like it can say you played the game wrong or missed out on some pacifist route lol but then on the other hand, if you cant tell what your character is supposed to be like, or the character seems too innocent or too kind-hearted to be killing the enemies, then naturally the question should be, wht are the enemies like? with this type of character- again assuming there are no twists or subversions- you'd want to be fighting against mindless robots, or illusions, or take place in a harmless virtual setting, or whatever else spares enemies from actually being killed unless the story wants them dead. or hell, the actual process of combat could be real, and it just ends with enemies simply getting knocked out or fleeing. all that in mind, i can understand your hesitation with killing the husks, but your usual flow of thought should be: can i interact with this guy out of combat? -> no. the game may only care about me fighting it then. -> why is it okay that i just kill these guys? -> are they zombies? are they infected people with a chance of coming back to their senses? are they possessed corpses? are they whatever other thing youre morally okay with killing? -> assume yes until proven otherwise. if no, bear the guilt on your conscious and keep killing anyways, maybe thats how the devs want you to react lmao
