    It's literally Slay the Spire with better visuals, cutscenes and narrative. They took the idea and tried to make it with bigger scales. But I think this distracts you from the main goal and in one moment the game gets just boring.

  • @the_elder_gamer

    This seems pleasant with an okay enough conceit, but I'm not sure if/when I'd get to it. I picked up _Sunset Hills_ today, which I might get to after I finish up with _Intravenous 2._ (a jarring shift in tone to be sure) And I'm still not sure whether I want to jump into _Black Myth: Wukong_ or not, it seems to be mainstream GOTY material (which is always a steep hill to climb for me).

      I finished it up yesterday and it's fine. Repeats puzzles a bit but I had a pretty good time with it. Black Myth Wukong is too much of a boss rush type game for me.

    While I'm sure there is an audience for this, when you consider _Stardew_ is only $15USD, I think the price is going to limit that audience...not a new problem for Whitethorn Games, they might want to rethink their strategy.

    • @PlayerState
      @PlayerState 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      When it comes to the price of indiegames they have gone up over the last year or so. $20 is kind of becoming the norm which is no bad thing imo. If Stardew came out today I reckon it would be closer to $20.

    • @the_elder_gamer
      @the_elder_gamer 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@PlayerState However, this is $25 and has something like one-fifth the content, games/publishers have to build an audience. I'm not necessarily saying it's right (capitalism has its flaws), only that this publisher might be limiting their audience with lesser known titles by pricing them at the high end. How many cozy life sims are there now? (with only those two tags you get 155) The competition in the indie space is brutal now and price plays a roll. I don't think Vampire Survivors would have been a success has it launched at $25, the low entry point made people think, "it's only $5, I'll give it a try".

    This is getting hammered in the Steam reviews. I hope the developer is able to address the concerns of the community and make the changes it seems most people want. It's always a shame when so much effort is put into a game and the reviews are instantly critical. I wish Flazm good luck!

    • @PlayerState

      Some of it is your usual nonsense about comparing the older games to the newer one in terms of number of levels etc which is a false equivalence as there are more systems and bigger maps. I do get the complaints about the train ghosting as it does reduce the stakes. At the same time I do think some of that got a bit laborious in the second game as maps got more intricate. Those who complain about it not being Transport Tycoon came into the game with the wrong expectations and I'm not sure who that is on really. Ultimately I think it still holds the same pleasure of setting up the logistical networks which was the main draw of the series for me. As for bugs, I've yet to encounter any.

    Ridiculous observation incoming: as in the trailer, there's something distractingly off about Vic's bum, like it was originally larger, then someone commented during development, so they shrunk it down without changing the proportion of her hips and legs. I thought it might not be distracting in actual gameplay, and perhaps it wouldn't be if I were the one playing, but, as a viewer, it still is. YMMV. Otherwise, the gameplay seems polished, if a little bland, though the music adds something innocuously pleasant. And the setting, generically attractive/charming, if a bit twee. Traversal might be a _thing_ if fast travel (zip line?) isn't a thing. Overall impression: nice (and all the plusses and minuses that implies). If you play more I'd be curious to hear your expanded thoughts.

    There's a lot to like and a lot that needs significant improvement. It doesn't seemed to have improved much since last year's demo. Given the pace of development, I'm not sure it'll get to where it needs to be prior to the audience for it having moved on, which is a shame. I think people could have gotten excited for this a year from now when it (hopefully) would have been in a much more polished state; another example of the problem of releasing a game too early, especially given the price.

    I know this isn't a fun comment, but I don't understand why we're playing as a cat-person. If you're going to forego an Asian or European fantasy theme, maybe try to do something more interesting than cats? (and I'm a cat person!) Or lean way more into making the character have a pronounced cat move set? As it is now, it just seems arbitrary (or cheap because the Internet loves cats). This is just another one of those times when I think a dev should go back and think about that they're presenting more. I'm not confident they'll dial this in.

    • @PlayerState
      @PlayerState หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm not sure a game has to give a lore specific reason as to why you are playing as a cat, outside of the developers wanting to make all the characters animals. Take Tails of Iron for instance, they don't explain why everyone are animals, it's just a stylistic choice. Plus, another human fantasy game isn't that inspiring. There are various ways the character acts like a cat, they could perhaps do more but it might complicate the combat and make it less fun.

    • @the_elder_gamer
      @the_elder_gamer หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@PlayerState I don't need lore specific reasons, I completely agree another generic fantasy setting boring (really boring), but it's more that the choice of cat-person makes for awkward looking animations (as they exist) and doesn't make any thematic sense within the environments (they look quite asset-y) I've seen in the game. So it comes off as an arbitrary choice (I have a Mitchell & Webb skit in my head, "Why don't we make the main character a cat?") rather than a deliberate choice. By contrast, _everything_ about Tails of Iron _is_ absolutely a deliberate choice. I imagine part of the problem comes down to money (and perhaps SEO) and how much original art you can produce as a small developer, but the best games often are the ones where the developers make the best choices within their budget, and I'm just not sure these folks are making good choices. The game also hasn't appeared to improve much (if at all) since I first encountered it nearly a year ago. As always, I wish the devs well, I want to see small devs succeed, but after following indies for as many years as I have, and seeing the same mistakes and bad choices play out again and again, I feel somewhat obliged to raise concerns in the hopes that someone reads my comments and maybe gleans a little glimmer of something that helps them make a better game.

  • @the_elder_gamer
    @the_elder_gamer 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I put nearly 100 hours into this, it's both more and less than the sum of its parts. It's the kind of game you remember more than remember playing. There's sort of a whole conceptual layer to the game that might not be apparent if you don't commit to a lot of playtime; the exploration, sense of discovery, and writing is well above average, so it's the kind of game that you get out what you put in, which isn't for everyone. It's not a _profound_ game, but I admire its ambition and I think it largely succeeds in what it set out to do, which is more than many games could ever hope to achieve. Also, you missed about a million things (possibly a slight exaggeration), switches, interactions, routes, and directions aren't always obvious, stuff is hidden, and going forward sometimes means veering off in another direction for a while. You can go everywhere you can see. The game rewards patience, perception, and perseverance.

    I haven't had a chance to review the games shown during the presentation, but I imagine you've hit at least 3 or 4 of the highlights that I'd be interested in. But as always with these shows, I try to focus on the games coming out over the next few weeks/months and not get too far ahead of myself. So far this year, only six or seven games have really stood out, out of the thirty or so I had wishlisted prior to the start of the year. In other words, I'm trying to tamp down the hype.

    This seems great and I'm glad it exists. The writing, tone, and gameplay all compliment each other. …but, there's some history we need to talk about. I have never entirely forgiven Suspicious Developments (the dev) for releasing _Gunpoint_ (2013) without even a thank you to Ben Croshaw (better known as "Yahtzee" of No Punctuation fame, Escapist/Second Wind and Fully Ramblomatic) or acknowledgement of his 2007 game _Trilby: The Art of Theft,_ a game with which Gunpoint shared more than a passing resemblance. And while Yahtzee did indeed write about this shortly after the Gunpoint's release, acknowledging that they were indeed aware of his game yet absolving them of any wrongdoing, it just never sat quite right with me; and while it doesn't rise to the level of theft or plagiarism, inspiration deserves acknowledgement. So, with that said, it seems to me that the Steam page for Tactical Breach Wizards should probably acknowledge that this game is largely inspired by (or pretty much just a blend of) both Door Kickers and Into the Breach. While you and I might find this obvious, many/most people won't, as such, the devs owe it to their eventual audience the opportunity to share in the enjoyment of those games too.

      That's interesting, do you think all games should do that?

    • @the_elder_gamer

      @@PlayerState I think it depends on the extent to which ideas, mechanics, or graphics are directly lifted from other sources, but as a general rule, yes, I think recognition and acknowledgement of sources is important. Obviously, this is an absolute rule in academia, but musicians cite influences all the time, directors are also forthcoming about where they got ideas for shots etc., and I'd say the arts, broadly, recognize that it's proper to share your work in the context of the world you live in and how you got there. As such, I think it would be good for the gaming industry to adopt a similar disclosure. Innovators should be recognized as such, so too should imposters be exposed. It would a quick and easy way to separate the good developers from the asset-flippers and copycats. Historically, gaming has been terrible at taking itself seriously, and this is the kind of thing that might help in solidifying gaming as having some kind of cultural legacy and significance.

    Chimera have nailed the artwork but it seems like they gameplay still needs work. I was quite interested in this game, but I think I'll wait out the early access period and see where this gets to over the remainder of the year. If it drags out beyond that I'll likely have lost interest and moved on to another complete/1.0 strategy game. I know it's an old attitude at this point, but _most_ versions of early access is failing the gaming community and negatively affecting the industry as a whole. There needs to be a better business model than making players take on the financial risks the publishers should be shouldering. We need developers and publishers committed to making complete and _fully_ playtested games at launch. Short of a very few established developers with a clear development path, I'm just not willing to pay full price for an unfinished product with an uncertain future. At this point, more than half the games on my wishlist are still in early access, many for over a year, and those are games I'll probably never end up purchasing. It's a shame.

      There are always going to be those who abuse/take advantage of early access and those that unfortunately don't make a success of it but I think in general it has been a net positive for the industry. This game for instance feels like the perfect example of it. The game is in a playable state but needs polish and some work and hopefully the community and money allow them to do that. I do think that unless you really want to support a developer, in most cases you are better off waiting until early access is over before jumping in as like you say there is always a risk it never reaches release.

      @@PlayerState I need to push back a little. There are a few reasonable justifications for early access, sometimes bigger developers (like Supergiant) release something into the wild to get feedback and to help shape the game, sometimes it's from solo (or very small) developers who want to publish a game themselves and need the funding to continue an existing product, these are reasonably cases. There can be others, but these seem like the two most ethical cases. Where I see trouble is with established publishers, the ones who should putting up the money to pay for the development of a game, instead they offload that burden on to a player base. The publishers are still taking their cut from the developer but escaping the responsibility of producing a finished product because they're cashing in early on the players. (the worst recent example of this is Homeworld 3) It just sets up an extremely unhealthy business model, one where the devs are pushed to release an unfinished game to satisfy publishers (not players) and that throws what should be the balance of the system out of whack. You can see this in action especially in the recent Paradox games, where they capitalized on all the goodwill of the Cities: Skylines community so they could rake in a bunch of cash for their quarterly earnings filings. And while this wasn't "technically" early access, it absolutely was in practice. And I see this as a bit of a bellwether signal for the industry writ large. Very few developers can recover from a bad launch. You need to be the size of CDPR to claw your way back from a Negative Steam rating with years of work from 100s of developers. Most small studios don't have the runway to do that. Instead, while they may ultimately "finish" a game, it's rarely the one they set out to make, instead it ends up an inferior product, lost in the sea of other 6 out of 10 games. And this can only serve to lose you revenue and undermine why you set out to be a game developer in the first place. Sure, in many cases, these were never going to be Overwhelmingly Positive games, most aren't, but game development is too difficult to hobble yourself at the outset with an under-baked product at the behest of a publisher. There are too many games out now, you have to stand out to get noticed and that rarely happens if you're releasing your game before it's done. And that's why I see there being a problem with the early access model. If you got through it, thank you!

      @@the_elder_gamer Yeah I totally agree that bigger publishers shouldn't be using it, I even have a slight issue with someone like Supergiant doing it due to their current financial position. I do think one area in which is it causing developers issues is that it can become a situation where a game is never done with players getting used to consistent updates so that, even once the game hits 1.0 the developers feel the need to keep adding to the game. You are now seeing developers have to put out statements that they are no longer updating the game, which feels a bit weird and can have a negative impact on the game, even though it shouldn't.

    Lots to like here, but I'd love to see more: double or triple the amount of work animations; a slightly less obvious Mobius art style, it's good, it could just benefit from being more original; a better work/selection UI, the picking/harvesting stuff is interesting but it needs underlying systems that determine how you interact with it need more thought/polish so you're not constantly micromanaging work tasks; more terrain variety, particularly elevation (water in low areas, different plants and rocks in different zones); and more interaction between all the non-human elements so it feels more like a living ecosystem and not just a static canvas. At this stage, while there are plenty of good bones, the game feels like a quarter or third of a fully realized game. It could be streamlined in some areas and fleshed out in others. [edit - to elaborate, I think it should have fewer "puzzle" elements and encourage smart and/or interesting placement of buildings, not limit you to the correct/best option] I'm really hoping the developers have the opportunity to work on this for a few more years and fully realize some kind of grand vision. If they do, I think they can make something quite special, but if they don't, I think this will just be another city builder with a decent premise and art style but nothing that really stands out. (a non-violent eco version of Surviving the Aftermath or Endzone isn't quite enough for me at this point)

    Melee to regain mana doesn't solve the problem of having to resort to melee because you're constantly running out of mana.

      No, but it does give you a means to regen mana that isn't either tied to consumables, or doesn't exist at all, which is usually the case with soulslikes. I agree it is not a perfect solution.

    Every month I'm always impressed by how well you present these top 10 lists. Three smaller games, none my usual fare, are: _The Garden Path,_ a life sim with a distinct art style and worldbuilding; _Rune Coliseum,_ a deckbuilding, card battling, fighting, strategy game with excellent 2D gladiatorial fighting animations; and finally, a goofy physics game, _STRETCHER MEN,_ where you're controlling two people carrying a stretcher through realistic-ish 3D landscapes. I hope I get to see you demo Megacopter on the channel!
