How to inspect games! PS1 edition
Inspecting games!
With my piles and piles of filthy games also comes piles and piles of information! And with more and more games being bought and sold online, it’s now more important than ever to be able to assess games both virtually and in-hand! So let’s get into it!
In this series we show a few different examples of damage and issues you might find on PS1 jewel case games. How to identify water issues from images, how to check a game for mold or other troubles, and some general things to look for while you’re giving them a once over!
While you can (and should) always walk away from a sale of a game if something doesn’t feel right, sometimes you can snag bargains by knowing what the issues are! (Or by spotting something that other sellers/buyers maybe didn’t!)
And remember, we’ve got videos on how to fix PS1 discs and swap cases too! So no matter the issues you might run into, we’ve got you covered!
And as always, if you have any questions, feel free to find me on Discord or drop me a message in the comments!

While this wasn't quite the full disc sticker I was hoping for, it's still a good example of removing these center ring stickers!! They also rarely come off in one piece! Ok so this process is the same as the RedBox sticker for Xbox 360 games, except for one small difference. The Blockbuster stickers are technically security stickers so they'll intentionally leave residue and sticker. You'll se...

Wow another great video i am starting to get good at polishing these discs up by hand and am getting good results, still getting micro scratch's and don't know how to get rid of them maybe you know of a better way sense you are the expert, also do plan on doing a video on deep scratch removal like using micromesh pads it would be so helpful have a handful of discs with deeper scratch's and because of that even though they are much better they still skip, and lastly do you plan on making a video on blue rays and also how to use a machine correctly, keep up the good work. thanks Theo
Thanks for this. I just tried this on a disc that would always freeze. Now it works.
Hello, you just help me fix some settings on discord, I have stumbled upon your TH-cam channel in the past. I am Happy to meet the creator of it.
What if the game has deep deep scratches how do you clean it
Focus on just polishing that scratch. Work in all directions, across and along the scratch. And try to keep the movements as flat and smooth as possible!
This is older, but been watching. I have an old Smackdown game for PS2 that was pretty scratched up. Game works but some of the music and video on the screens during the entrances are messed up. Tried polishing twice and still the same. Do I do a few more rounds of polishing, or am I screwed?
Keep cleaning it! Usually on PS2 discs all of the audio is kept on the same spot on the disc, so that should narrow down where you should look!!
@RestoreAndReplay Ok Thanks. I'll give it a go. Luckily most of the game is fine, but that little bit bugs me.
Kinda unrelated to this video, but I have a copy of silent hill on ps1. Expensive game, works alright but had one deep scratch on the disc that I would like to remove. Because of its value I’m worried about trying to fix the scratch. What would you recommend? Any help would be invaluable 🙂

@@RestoreAndReplaythanks for the reply, much appreciated. Il give that a try!
Thanks recently I got a ps2 slim from a family member that they had as a kid and I need a lot of disc fixed
Can novus 2 scratched remove scratches too on PlayStation disc games?
Absolutely yes!
Awesome video, but what if it is the manual and cover art what stinks, not the box?
Toss them into a bag with baking soda! Make sure they are perfectly covered and let it sit overnight! I've got some bags doing that right now actually!
Thanks for this. Im going to try it out on one of my discs which keeps freezing. Its got several long circular scratches on it.
Im a reseller and just bought a lot and almost all the games have mold on the cover arts but the disks and manuals dont seem to have any mold what should i do in this situation?
RUN! But honestly you can either sit down and mitigate all of the mold. Or look up some repro cover arts. Mold cleaning and restoration is a not fun process, so I don't blame people for not wanting to do it. But you can start by leaving the art and disc and manuals out in indirect sunlight for a halfhour to kill off the mold.
30:29 I’m using Novus 2 on a PS2 copy of Batman Begins. Before I put any polish on it (Simple isopropyl job at first) the game ran not perfectly by any means but no big issues. I’m 3 quarters into the game and it’s beginning to skip really bad. Music and sounds are repeating like a broken record. Well that’s actually been removed a bit with some polishing. I can get through the interrogation with some annoying freezes but otherwise less technical issues. After all that I can’t make it past a door. Some enemy’s are supposed to come out so I can move forward and also sneak behind and knock them out. I had to look it up to see what’s supposed to happen. Sue me. I think I’m justified this time.
Scratches are all over none appear to be more substantial than the others. Maybe not my best EBay purchase it came complete though.
This can happen though! Sometimes I'll clean a disc, play the game and run into another freeze and have to clean the disc again! Don't give up!!
@@RestoreAndReplay Ugh. Okay I get back to it. I might need to pop in an album or 2 for this one. I am so close to the end of the game and I will not play the Arkham games until this one is beat.
Some Beatles then some Avril Lavigne… Maybe IDK it doesn’t have to be complicated and I hope it won’t be long. If it is then Tommy Dorsey will accompany me as I swing over to my room. Video games of each age aren’t the only things I get sentimental over.
Your tips and tricks of cleaning is such a treat! I applaud you for sharing these alternatives! I found an ebay disc that is super scratched which is Def Jam Fight for NY for a good deal of 20 bones. Im gonna try to resurface and use your tutorial the best at my ability!
I know this might be a long shot, but I just picked up a copy of Pikmin and it wouldn’t read, got it re-imaged and it still won’t read. The place I re-imaged it at said that there’s two little micro bubbles on the disc that’s probably keeping it from reading. Is there any possible way to fix that?
Soooo it depends on what the bubbles look like. Hopefully they aren't small and clear.
@ I think they are
You are doing the lords work! Big ups man
I used scrath X megulires whatever its called polished a scratch out. Took me 4-5 times dont give up! Then lil water on cotton everything rub in circles polish and at the end water.
Bad idea with this not removed all scratch
Dang it! But it looked so good afterwards! And the disc started to work again!!
This was a great result. Subscribed. I would love a video on if there are any ways to clean a PS2 case up in a similar way, or could this be used? Ideally looking to improve the general wear and fine scratches on them, getting them back to a more clear state if possible!
There is a way! And there's a video on the way too!!
Almost impossible to find unscratched discs especially at yard sales etc, thank you for the well made video!
Whats wild is that those discs can be covered in scratches and they'll still ask top dollar!!
I'm a detailer..I use it alot on my old console ..
Oh you saucey boy you........ take them gloves off you tease..
Green beans forever -Beans,Emu, and the discord bois
This is like an alternative for the JFJ Easy pro since it the one in the video is cheaper!!!
Honestly, buy a JFJ over this piece of crap. Honestly!!
I hate mold, it destroyed a lot of my collector items.
How does using the Skip Dr work for removing deeper scratches that hand polishing doesn't remove? Then removing the skip doctor marks with polishing? Will that work? has anyone done this with good results?
It works terribly. The skip doctor wasn't made for deep scratches at all.
Listen dude, dont make me come over there.
thanks a lot for these videos. i ordered some novus on amazon that's coming monday and i'll be using your advice when i begin resurfacing some of my scratches cds.
so glad i found this AFTER sticking like fifteen different discs thru this fucking machine i thought would solve all my problems
Hey Noah don't use the Skip d.....dang it. I was too late. :(
@ i appreciate that the info got to me eventually at least 🙏😭
What is name of tha cream??
Hello, I just had a brief question that you kind of got into in this video, but I'm not sure if I got it all. I wanted to clean a bunch of game cases and cover arts from a lot of games that someone gave me. I was just wondering if all I needed to do to clean the cases was to soak them in a tub or sink or warm water and soap? Were there any other steps you'd recommend other than just doing that, and them drying them all afterwards? There is also a bit of a smokey smell to them. Thank you!
Toss those cases (without the cover arts or games) in a sink full of warm soapy water! Let them soak for about a half hour and take them out. Give them a rinse and see how they are looking! Rinse and repeat as needed!
Neither of my game cubes are reading any disc sad days here 😔
Nice video, very helpful! Living in Europe (Sweden) and have a hard time getting my hands on Bestine, any recommendations for replacement products? Is it enough with just buying Heptane or is it something I specifically need to look out for?
Thanks. I found a copy of Silent Hill 2, which is around 150 dollars, in the garbage of all places and I found your video while researching disc repair. It's not so damaged as to where it doesn't boot up but the load screen after selecting new game is infinite. I ordered some Novus 2 so we'll see how the disc turns out.
I bought a copy of Silent Hill 2 on eBay a while back, and I was able to play it once before it stopped working. It was pretty expensive & I love Silent Hill 2 to death so I was hella bummed out. I'm gonna try using the Novus 2 stuff the guy in the video used. I hope it works 😭😭 (NICE PFP BTW)
Back in the day the skipdr saved some unplayable cds.
Saved me rn. You just gotta do it right
Might be kind of a dumb question? What type of gloves do you use, and are they easy to work in?
DEX FIT Nitrile Work Gloves FN330. I love them, I can still feel pressure and heat, but it protects my hands from the filth!!
Will this get rid of the cloudiness of a bad resurface job.
So if you have a disc that looks cloudy, try to clean it with iso alcohol first. That tends to get rid of some post-resurfacing clouds.
You just saved me £65 ($85). Thanks so much mate
How do I remove old glue from cardboard cases? Ie the silent hill 2 case. Normally I would use WD40 on a plastic case, which works for me. But I don't know if it will work on cardboard, and dont want to damage it. I tried heating it up with a hair dryer. No joy. Any ideas?
Heptane! Its also known as bestine. It'll remove the adhesive and not soak the paper!
@RestoreAndReplay nice one buddie
i've been trying the same car scratch one on a ps3 bluray i got recently, the game loaded before , but inevitably crashes, still ain't working )) help ?! :D
Ok so with Blurays, you have to spot clean scratches, and you've gotta polish for quite a bit on those spots!
So I tried this method on a lightly scratched $3 dollar game before going in on my more expensive titles. It removed the big scratches for sure, but now the scratchless parts of the disc are loaded with micro scratch swirls. I have tried cotton, micro fiber, and polishing pads. I have tried varying amounts of pressure and novus 2. After a few hours of attempting by hand, I went and got a polishing pad for my drill for further testing. Novus 2 seems too abrassive. It will took out the larger scratches, but literally filled my disc with micro scratches.
You used a drill? I never recommend doing that. You can get a mirror finish using Novus 2, you just have to reduce the amount of Novus you use. It won’t fill your disc with micro scratches, part of the process is polishing out those as well. Same process as with headlights or car polishing. Sounds like something got weird though, maybe the drill? Can you provide some pictures?
@@RestoreAndReplay They look like the swirl marks on discs done in a jfj easy pro with the white pad and not the softer yellow one. Just tiny light swirl marks. I know you didn't recommend the drill. I was just in the mood the mood to mess around and find out on a $3 game no one cares about. I have a perfectly clean GTA 5 install disk with no play disk that I will run a test on tomorrow to try and reproduce the swirls, and take some pictures.
I used some compressed air to (barely) get inside the center ring to help blow out some residue and dry up the cleaning agent I used (isopropyl alcohol) faster. I did it without knowing if it's safe though... do you think it would be lol?
Made my disc nice and shiny but sadly didn't bring it back to life. :(
What cleaner do you use for cleaning the plastic?
I just use a regular old all purpose cleaner!!
I have a dvd of happy feet that freezes during play. Im not sure if its scratched or not but I am pretty sure it is. I haven't received it yet, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask anyway. I have turtle lens cleaner, nu finish car polish, and carfidant ultimate scratch and swirl remover.
Turtle Lens Cleaner!!!
I actually have one of the blockbuster disc shield with the blue blockbuster logo on an old original silent hill. How would you go about doing so?
I've just about collected enough blockbuster stickered discs to make a video!!!
Looks like you did a nice job!
Great stuff. I just got a bunch of used PS2 games and almost every case is beyond saving. I was wondering if you had any idea where to go to get the best PS2 replacement cases? I know there are a few options but is there one that is as good of quality as the original PS2 cases? Also, you mentioned something about if you had a big batch you would do a bathtub soak. You mean a bunch of cases? If so, I thought water was not good for them, or am I wrong?
You do realize you just repaired 2 discs using the skip Dr. in conjunction with some car polish..
For real. You're supposed to use a mixture of ethanol and water anyways. He didn't much here. Also, if your CD is really messed up (my insomniac cd, which is why I'm here), you just have to work at it. I swear I cleaned my CD like 5 times last time and it was still skipping, but right now, I did it once for like 5 minutes, and I haven't noticed a single skip so far. And it would skip halfway through about every single song before. I'm convinced if it doesn't work for you, it's all user error
i heard my country Denmark and im all ears lol
