SteppIR Antenna Tuning Noise in a Receiver
มุมมอง 6704 ปีที่แล้ว
For the purpose of demonstration. The transceiver and antenna selection in this video was intentionally configured to dramatically enhance the tuning noise that might be noticed when tuning a SteppIR Antenna. The noise is considered by most to be normal, and is barley noticeable in a correctly installed and properly operating system. The noise is created when the antenna controller commands the...

    Its a great concept. But trapped beams or even an LPA are still kings of reliability. And when these go down in an ice storm or high winds ouch ! But for the guys with fat IRA’S I guess they keep StepIR in the green.

    When has lowest swr been or equals resonance? It’s like trimming a dipole for best swr, it won’t be resonant, if it was it won’t be 50 ohm . This is the problem with step Ir owners! Very little idea of what a resonant antenna is, It is not a step ir. It adjust length for best swr not resonance or best efficiency which is resonance and some form of impedance matching to get back to 50 ohms. On a real yagi you set the driven element so it’s a resonant then you adjust the gama match or matching net work to get 20 odd ohms back to 50 ohms, A step ir just trims the antenna length , using reactance and a non resonant length to get a low swr. High performance antenna builders don’t build these things, these things are built for appliance operators with very little antenna knowledge, And those who know how a yagi works don’t buy these motorised antennas and the poor reliability . I guess gullible hams get sucked in all the time and the sharks only too willing to sell snake oil . I have a high performance antenna cause it cost me thousands of dollars! No you don’t! You have a expensive compromise that sort of works some ham bands , when the antenna works that is . Show how far the hobby has degraded, to the point hams fall for marketing hype over knowledge.

    Antennas should never have moving parts, I've heard of too many guys with motor issues. Every antenna has tradeoffs and this one is expensive. I get it, limited space, easy of use, I would rather use a hexbeam and a vertical for 40m. 6m yagis are small and light weight. This antenna violates the KISS rule. I hope it works well for you.

  • @tangoseal1
    @tangoseal1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I own the BigIR vertical and the steppir motors in both the EHU and the 80m coil unit sound exactly the same. It is normal as stepping motors work in literaly steps rather than lineal rolling motion. Hard to explain. Steppir are very technical but exceptional performers. Hard to find something that will work better to be honest.

    Are you saying that you get that noise when you are tuning the antenna? And why were you and USB mode instead of LSB? Just curious. To the person asking if you had connected to controller ground to the antenna ground, aren't you supposed to connect all elements to the same ground potential?

    • @kb3wfv544
      @kb3wfv544 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. The radio was set up intentionally to capture this noise. Tuning antenna noise is often heard in the background on an extremely quite band or when the receiver is tuned to a different band then the antenna is on. Thanks for watching

    Nice video! How high do you have it? Was thinking on getting the DB18E with the 3 loops. I hope there worth it. Many tell me that they are very complex and when they break-down, are very expensive getting them repaired.

      Hi John, My Urban Beam is mounted at 55 feet. It works great! The SteppIR antenna systems require attention to detail during assembly and proper operating habbits. Think high performance sports car verses a family grocery get'er sedan. One is more expensive to own, maintain and operate. But the y sure are a lot of fun - Thanks for watching.

    On an existing roof would you place the steel mesh on top, then after attaching mount to the roof on top of mesh, coat with with Dicor roof paint? Would that hinder the ground plane? Last did you bond the ground plane to the trailer in any other way? ie ground straps down to the frame? I am considering the 400 for its reach on the 160 band why the 200? power?? 73's Thx k2bkr

    • @kb3wfv544
      @kb3wfv544 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John, I guess you could lay the mesh over the roof and seal it in.,But that would make it hard to electrically bond it to the trailer. My 5th wheel is welded aluminum frame. There is metal flashing along the edges of the roof that creates a rounded transition from the horizontal roof surface to the vertical wall surface. My wire mesh is bonded to this flashing and the flashing is attached/bonded along the top/side of the sidewall framing. All of this is under the rubber roof. I went with the 200 originally because at the time I had no interest in 160m. Besides most of the time spent in the trailer is during summer time conditions which are not favorable for 160m. I also wanted the ability to add an amplifier in the future, if I decide to do so. Thanks - Brian

    • @kb3wfv544
      @kb3wfv544 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good idea Robert. Hopefully there will not be a next time. I went with the wire mesh in this install because the holes in the mesh were about an inch in diameter. This allowed enough surface area space for the rubber roof adhesive to bond the plywood to the rubber roof material with the wire mesh sandwhiched in between.
