Hey, I'm Elly and I read and talk about books!
📚🍂☕️🍁
I read mostly literary fiction, contemporary fiction, Australian literature, and classics!
Expect reading challenges, reading like fictional characters, tier-ranking videos, deep dives into different authors, time periods, and literary movements, and whatever else grabs my interest!
This year I’m on a mission to read all 101 Oprah Book Club books (wish me luck!).
Next year I might look at the Pulitzer Prize!

I read the FIRST Oprah book club books...
มุมมอง 916ปีที่แล้ว
Are Oprah's book club selections from 1996 any good? What kinds of books was she recommending to her viewers when she first started her book club? How diverse were her selections? In the third episode of my video series where I read every single Oprah book club selection (there's now over 100 yikes!), I returned to the beginning and read the first five books Oprah ever selected in 1996 and 1997...

Love this ❤
Todd here. Nice video! Just stumbled upon your channel.
Hey gf! I don’t know how I fell upon your channel but I’m loving these recommendations!!! Do you have an insta? I’m terrible on TH-cam but all these recommendations are amazing!!!
What should I read? Doctor Zhivago Hotel? Trivago
This was so cool that you did this I’m just getting back to into reading so I’m enjoying this 🥰❤️
I think Stephen Aryans books would be great as films
hello, do you have a Goodreads account/page?
Hope you are doing good ❤and miss you
I think Toibin is like Toe-Bean and Chiam is said like High-Am. (Hey man are you high? High am!) Great review. I know I should read Catcher in the Rye and Breakfast at Tiffany's. Never got around to it but they are definitely classics.
Some of her book choices were not that good imo.
Love Stephen King - IT is a long read but the character development is 👌 I would just start with that, as daunting as it is!! 11.22.63 is another great book of his. And if you listen to audiobooks then the Pet Sematary audio is amazing. Some of his books are hit & miss, just need to find the ones that work for you ☺️
Great video, I only knew Toibin and my 2024 tbr has just grown by a few books. 😊
You have very naive view regarding what America is all about. Just look up the Puritans and what their deal was, specifically exactly why they emigrated in the first place.
I was thinking of the Boston tea party when I made that comment
I think there is no deeper reason for recommendation than these are all very popular, accessible and relatively non-controversial “classics”.
The Historian sounds so interesting! Adding it to my tbr 😊 The last book I bought is Kate Morton’s Homecoming, it is a 2023 release but I got it used yay
Oooh I’ve heard of Kate Morton but I’ll have to check that book out! ☺️
the bell jar 🥺💞 this is such a fun video, several of these are on my tbr.
It was so fun to make! ☺️
The Bell Jar and The Road are two of my faves. both so heartbreaking but so beautiful
Such great books! But so heartbreaking for sure! ☺️🥺
Great range of reading recommendations Elly. Have read a few of those but keen to have a look at The Offing and a few of the others you mention. Recently read Tom Lake which references Our Town quite heavily and i reckon you would enjoy too. I don't really think about the season when i choose books, but a few I will be reading this summer are Anne Enright's The Wren, The wren, Wifedom by Anna Funder, and Death of a Bookseller by Alice Slater. Nice to have you back.
These are some great recommendations! I’ve been seeing Tom Lake a lot and definitely want to check it out ☺️👀
It is winter here ❄️ but I found Our Town in a local bookstore, so very excited to read it! Great recommendations as always 😊
Hope you enjoy it! ☺️
Had a 'huh?' moment thinking, it's December love, then remembered Australia exists! 😂
Wow that’s a lot of D. H. Lawrence! I will have to see now if my used book store has Sons and Lovers, as well as Our Town (I do remember that scene from Stardust!!) I just finished Godkiller by Hannah Kaner, and my last 5 star was the Hollow Places by T Kingfisher 😊
I almost cleared out half a shelf with all those Lawrence books for this wrap up lol! Hopefully they have them 🤞 Ooh I haven't heard of either of those books-- I'll definitely check them out!
Godkiller is a fantasy book, so I am not sure if it will be something you are interested in, but I do highly recommend the Hollow Places, if you ever want to try some cosmic horror that is not graphic or extreme in any way 😊
@@lena_blueOoh okay, I am a scaredy cat when it comes to horror (lol) but if Hollow Places isn't graphic or extreme I will definitely give it a go! 😯
Really great to see you back. I really enjoy hearing about the wide variety of books you read.
Thank you so much! That's so sweet 😊✨
Great job summarizing so many books so quickly! Ineed to reread Beartown, I loved it so much. (Sadly I didn’t love the other books in the series as much, especially The Winners which was a DNF.)
hahahah thank you! (the original footage was just over an hour and 20 minutes 😯 I talked too much lol) Oh that's so disappointing about the Beartown sequels 😭 I will definitely try to lower my expectations going into them so I'm not too disappointed if I don't like them!
My local libraries often have used book sales where you can fill a bag with whatever and it's only $5. So, yeah, since it doesn't break the bank, I have picked up quite a few books simply because of pretty covers on those occasions. And some of them I've read and hated but have not gotten rid of. Because they are SO PRETTY! 🤗 Plus, I might need them if I ever start my TH-cam channel and do some of those book tag things. 😊
Hahahah I love that! Pretty covers really have us in a chokehold! 😍😂
Great video! I added the White Girl to my tbr, I don’t think I read from any Australian authors before, so going to give it a go 😊
Thanks so much! 💖 Ooh I really hope you like it! (I would also definitely recommend Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey!) 😊
If you like beach town thrillers I'd definitely recommend The Drowning by Bryan Brown who is an Aussie!
Ooh I just looked this up-- it's blurbed by Trent Dalton! It sounds really really interesting. I will definitely add it to my book wishlist! 😊✨
@@literally_elly I love finding good southern hemisphere authors, since I feel like it can be so hard for them to get the recognition of authors from the UK/USA, so always love recommending them when I do find them!
@@charlottesinclair9354 I love that so much! Feel free to comment any recommendations you have! 🥰✨
You always put so many books on my radar! I adore you channel so much ❤
Aw thank you so much! That's so sweet 🥰✨
Those are pretty covers
Leon, that's si funny😊
Not my smartest moment 😂😂
Elly.. i see ' a fine balance' just sitting pretty there.. its such a good book. Have you read it yet? I hope you do soon if you havent yet 😊
Hahahaha right?! I kept staring at it while editing 😂 I have a video planned for January where I will DEFINITELY read this book! 😊✨
@@literally_elly haha 😂😂 I cannot wait to hear your thoughts about it!!! 😁
So glad you're back! For me, the last book that made me cry just out of sadness for humanity was Amygdalatropolis by B. R. Yeager
Thankyou so much! ☺️ Ooh that book sounds so interesting! It sounds like Bret Easton Ellis’ Less Than Zero for the modern age in a way 😲 I’m adding it to my list of books to keep my eyes out for
a woman is no man is definitely a heavy hitter
You're backkkkk ❤❤❤❤ finally 😊😊
Hahahah I know, it's been so long! Glad to be back 😊🥰
Are you still continuing with the Oprah challenge? Even if it continues into 2024 I’d still be really interested to continue watching the reading vlog series. Welcome back!
Thankyou! That means so much to hear that those videos are loved 🥰✨ Yeah I still really want to keep making those videos-- I enjoy making them and I think I'd feel unsatisfied to not finish the series! I'm currently planning the next episode, but it probably won't be filmed or uploaded until early next year 😊
Raeleen from the Books Unbound podcast says October is for spooky and December is joyous, so November is for crying 😿
Ohh that's a good way to look at it! I love that podcast 🥰
Nice to see you gain.😊
So sweet, thankyou! 😊
Finally, new video. Welcome back❤❤
Hahahah I know right!? Thank you! 😊
So happy to see you back :).
thankyou so much! 😊
Welcome back!
Thankyou!!
absolutely adore this video idea , and i've been wanting to read Virgin Suicides so your review was helpful!
Aw thank you so much!! ☺
Hope you are okay. Would love to see more videos from you!
Aw thankyou so much Aimee! I really appreciate your comment ☺🥰 Exciting things are coming I promise! I'm currently editing a video that I can't wait to share!!
I love how you've arranged your books as well. Will you be doing a bookshelf tour? <3
Thank you so much! 😊🥰 I have a few videos to upload in the next couple weeks but I'm hoping to post a bookshelf tour early December! 👀 (I'm currently trying to decide what type of tour I want to do -- whether a more overview-y tour, one where I show every single book (eek), or a tour focusing on my classics shelves. Or all of them! I haven't decided yet hahahah!)
I like your videos! My 2nd time watching this one. YOur bookshelf looks good Btw, i thought the book mentioned in Serendipity was something else, Love in the Time of Cholera?
Oh wow thank you so much! The fact you watched it twice makes me smile so much! 😊😊 You're definitely right! The Márquez book is the book mentioned in Serendipity. I was thinking of Must Love Dogs because Cusack's character is obsessed with the Dr Zhivago film but accidentally said Serendipity. Oops!
Wow very lovely bookshelves it resembles so much my new one that I ordered recently but with a brown color as my home furniture is brown but there is a difference in one thing that I don't have such English books collection which makes me so sad because English books are so expensive in my country and I can barely have some, the books I've collected through my entire life is Arabic and french as I am an author, because my country is fluent in french more than English, if you want to get rid next time of some books I will be glad to receive them in my home and I will be thankful indeed. By the way I love the way that you can build a new shelves to the ordinary ones wow that's so nice to have more rooms to more books.
Thank you so much! Your new bookshelves look amazing by the way! 😊
Elly...I am really enjoying this Oprah book club series and how you review books...I just love it 😊. I am so looking forward to what you read next. Toni Morrison is my absolute favorite author. For Song of Solomon, if you do a TH-cam search for "Toni Morrison Song of Solomon"...she explains in an interview some of what she was trying to accomplish when she wrote the book. She has done lengthy interviews for all of her books and I have watched them many times...they're addictive.
Thank you thank you! I'm so happy you're enjoying the series! I love watching author interviews too (you're so right-- they are so addictive!) so I will definitely check that out! 😊😊
I love your Oprah reviews!
Aw thank you!! 😊
Jane Hamilton's other book, A Map of the World, was the first Oprah book I ever read. It was really good. And it got made into a movie! As did some of my other favorites, Back Roads, House of Sand and Fog, and White Oleander. 👍 (P.S. I just found your channel and I see you started quite recently. Well, I'm enjoying your videos so far. Good luck!)
I can't wait to get to those books! Of the ones you've listed I've only read House of Sand and Fog (a couple years ago now) and really enjoyed it! I definitely want to get to more of the book club books soon! Thank you so much! I'm so glad you're enjoying them! 😊😊
"And then she lost all of her money..." *Can't stop laughing", looooool idk why but I started laughing too, great vid as always Elly
Hahahaha oops! 😂😅 Thankyou! ☺️
Congrats on 1k!!! Your content is great, and you talk about books that no one else ever mentions ❤
