    Maybe a silly question, but why can't you just cut the Japan spec connectors off and splice the correct wires to the connectors that came with the radio you bought?

    Hey there! My Dad owns an E32 which has been sitting for over 6 years now. I live in Ontario as well, I'm a high schooler with the ambition to restore it's car to the glory days. Around 6000 to repair all the wrong-doings of the car. If you still have the car, do you mind telling me how much is costs per year to have it? (Like insurance, gas, maintenance)

    This video was super helpful when I swapped my Japanese COMAND head unit in a W209 against an Android unit. I found that I did not need to use any physical ACC, illumination, or reversing camera, wires, since all these respective states/signals are communicated over the CAN bus and the Android unit receives them via the CAN bus module. So, for instance, the buttons on my Android unit light up, when I turn on the headlights of the car, even though I did not connect any illumination wire to the head unit. Same with the reversing camera; its signal is automatically displayed on the Android unit, since the latter knows when to switch to it based on CAN bus information. One essentially only needs to find the following from the Japanese car: 12V, GND, CAN high and CAN low (one also needs the antenna amplifier wire but only if one does not get the MOST converter to work). The Android unit will turn on when it receives a signal from the CAN bus module (which in turn receives it via the CAN bus wires). It won't use the 12V constant power permanently, unless one uses a "sleep mode" to make it turn on faster. The two CAN bus signals can sometimes be obtained from nearby CAN bus hubs, but in my case it was easiest to tap into the CAN bus signals from the upper control panel (the one with the hazard lights switch). I cannot speak to the W220, but I would suspect that the CAN bus module would also take care of all the signals for ACC, illumination, and reversing camera. P.S.: For the MOST adapter, one should find ACC, in addition to 12V and GND, so my reduced wire list above was only meant to apply to the head unit.

    • @coolcat23
      @coolcat23 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Andrii Motornyi You are right, in my W209, the CAN bus module takes care of ACC, illumination, and the "display video feed from the reversing camera" - signal. Normally, head units require a signal wire from the reversing camera to tell them when to switch the display, but at least in the W209, the "reversing" state of the car is communicated over the CAN bus and the CAN bus module attached to the Android head unit picks that up.

    • @andriimotornyi
      @andriimotornyi ปีที่แล้ว

      @@coolcat23 true. Even if you'll hook up to the reverse signal wire it'll draw small current and bring up check reverse bulb fault. So, thats why everything must be hooked up via can bus box.

    hi, I am installing one of the latest Xtrons units. Its very similar. In your video, you dont cover the FM antenna connection. My can is also a Japan import W220 2004. I can easily identify the factory plug on the car.....but its nothing like anything on the Xtrons unit. Xtrons do supply an adpater that fits on the back of their unit, but the other end is nothing like the Mercedes plug. Do you remember what you did ? Thanks

      They aren't steering wheel wires, they are can-bus loops. You can tap the wires at any place there is such a loop.

      I am interested too! I got huge problems with steering wheel control, especially the seller cannot help me. I have a built-in canbus decoder in the radio, with can bus protocol to choose. I found out, that pin 15 and 16 (I had comand 2.5 with d2b) are the right ones CAN - L and CAN -H. I had already android head unit, worked perfectly with external can bus decoder, now I got troubles. Even if I understood the functionality of canbus and radio, but with the new one I got my troubles. So please be so kind and show exactly how did you wired the green / black cable... (e.g. from iso connector to the radio? or directly with swc1 / swc2 cables etc.) thanks in advance!

    Great video. I am working on installing a universal android head unit in my US W220 2004. I used a fiberoptic decoder and have wired everything and all works. Two problems. My battery drained overnight. Could it be because I wired fiberoptic decoder to constant power per benzworld forum instructions? Secondly, since my unit is universal, it doesn't have a canbus module, therefore I lost steering wheel controls. Are these CAN modules car specific? Can I use one for a w211 or a VW? I had contacted some w220 AHU sellers and they wouldn't sell me just the CAN module. So I'm considering trying this...www.ebay.com/itm/273958559325

    • @mkbdiy9766
      @mkbdiy9766 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vegasjoey89139 I assume you have the BOSE MOST system. Depends on whether you want to keep your factory amp or if you want to replace that as well and your budget. If you want to keep it, you will have to get a fiberoptic converter module. I tried that but didn't like the sound (I'm an audiophile). So I returned the module, replaced amp as well and bypassed fiberoptic. Whatever your decision, Android headunits made specifically for these cars are really improving them.
