Getting Great Live Vocals with Mic Mechanic
Today we'll take a look at TC Helicon's "Mic Mechanic". For me this the ultimate vocal pedal, having a good compressor, auto eq plus great reverbs and delays in a very easy to use package. Users can quickly dial up the desired settings without diving into buried menus. If you don't want to rely on someone else to control the effects, if you're playing on house PA gear, if you just want a consistent vocal sound.... the Mic Mechanic may be the pedal for you. I'll demo the pedal towards the end using a wired Shure SM58.

I had a huge vinyl collection but the surface noise issue; the rumble; the hiss; the cracks and pops; the warping - the fact that every play wore away the high frequency (only takes 15 plays to significantly decline) and that every play destroyed the vinyl surface due to friction and dust attracted by static; the fact that no record is ever able to be centered causing its own problems of wow and flutter; the fact that classical vinyl sounds poor; the fact that the quality of the vinyl varies between producers; the fact that vinyl is poor regards BASS - All that and the cost and hassle of the various components to try and solve these problems (anti-static sleeves; needles; lubricants etc) made me steer away from it. The warmth argument I've never understood - maybe its a love of surface noise??? And lets not talk about the price of records v CDs - OMG!

Well, I think records are more collectible (generally), but CDs are more handy, convenient, and versatile. As far as quality, records are the more "natural" sound due to being literally the soundwave etched to the plastic. But CD sound is immune to the scratches, pops, and hisses vinyl is often known for, making for a more pristine listening experience. What do I buy? CDs, usually, because they tend to be a lot cheaper, take up less space, and will last a lot longer.

I don't think you're getting the best sound possible with this configuration, man. There's a clashing of the bass notes, it's all rumbly and shaky, but without a firm feeling of a distinct, singular bass tone underneath the guitar chord. I think it's mostly your chord voicings, they need to be adapted for that sort of playing. For example, you play a C/G instead of C, with the low 6th string, I suggest a regular C, even muting the 4th string to bring more separation and clarity to what will become the low-end. Think of the bottom 3 strings as a bass guitar: you don't want your bassist to play 2 strings at the same time, abeit for rare exceptions :) So yeah, that's what I'd do - try to minimize the polyphony in the lowest voices and add clarity to the mix.

Collecting vinyl is a form of masochistic nostalgia for those who grew up with vinyl and for those who didn't, it's just a trend that trend-obsessed people can't rationally explain to themselves. Some traditions should be kept in life, but some should be unloaded immediately after something better appears. There are few things in my life that make me as angry as the insane manipulation of digital music files by record companies in order to attract listeners. Of course, I'm talking about the loudness war. With this process, the vast majority of the advantages that the digital music file had over the analog music carrier were destroyed and the CD was compromised. Man creates, man destroys... A CD can sound absolutely like vinyl if it is mastered in the same way, and it can sound much better if the full dynamic range available is used. It can sound like garbage if compressed. There should be a law with mandatory jail time for idiots who abuse digital mastering and produce such crap. But today there are remastered editions of music coming out on CD that respect the dynamic range and correct the old, crappy editions. As for me, I'm a 58 year old man who grew up in the vinyl era and would rather have acute hemorrhoid attacks every 5 days than go back to back to those objects of torture and frustration. Nowadays I buy cds obsessively in bulk on eBay and wherever I can find them because I want to own music. If I like something I'm streaming, I buy a CD.

I grew up with vinyl records and wouldn't want them ever again. This is fantasised nostalgia from young fools who believe in junk or fit in trends. The loudness war was a phenomenon in the pop industry, not a necessary consequence of the medium. The classical world was never affected.

Vinyl sells more, but half of those vinyl buyers don't own a turntable, so just collectors. I have recently decided to stick with digital formats including CD, SACD and DSD downloads. DSD sounds as good or better than vinyl (IMO) without any of the drawbacks of noisy, scratched or flawed pressings (yes, even those from Acoustic Sounds and MoFi at $60 a pop). SACD is close. I'll keep my turntable and albums but will rarely buy vinyl at this point.

For me I'm not an audiophile in the slightest so sound quality I'm not really bothered. It's more storing, handling and price that's the deal breaker for me... I only get my favourite favourite albums on vinyl and get duplicates + everything else on CD, sometimes cassette. Because vinyl just takes up SO! Much room! You can fit like 100 CD's in the space 30 vinyl records take up. Plus vinyl if you don't get special shelves can be a pain in the ass to store, falling over on themselves at a whim, even if you have book ends and stuff holding them up so you constantly need to make sure they're all leaning in a way to balance eachother out without too much pressure at either end. Vinyl in general is SO much more expensive, like 2-5 times the price per album. Handling them can be such a pain, fiddling to get them in and out their sleeves without damaging the sleeves or the disc.. or hell trying not to drop the sleeves or disc since they're such awkward shapes in the hand. Trying hard not to catch them on anything to avoid such easy damage to the disc. Having to constantly be wiping the dust and hairs off them before you can spin a side, and static... uuuggghhh static is such a pain in the ass. But... vinyl records just look really nice in your hand, they have more art work, they feel special and they're very fascinating to spin. And although they're such a pain in so many ways, it's these good points that keeps me buying my favourites on them. But I rebuy every single album I have on vinyl on CD too because I often just cannot be bothered to deal with the annoyances of vinyl. While a CD, even a cassette, I can just stick in and play no problem.

In 1975, the average single LP record album cost $7.50. That's the equivalent of $45 today. Very few albums today cost $45. Good pressings cost 20 to 30 dollars, most closer to 20. CDs are cheaper, but records aren't expensive. And you get so much more with record albums. There was a time before the internet, and before CDs, when we learned of bands from the album covers and liner notes. Often, booklets were included with special releases. We knew every name of everyone in a band. CDs came in, with very little information included. Then, downloads, then streaming. Nobody knows anything about the band members. They might know the lead singers name, but little else. The skip button got worn out, searching for the hit singles. We used to know and love every song on an album. And there are a lot of bands that have one good song with a lot of filler that would've ended up in the trash, once upon a time. Now we have all the digital aids that make terrible singers into rock stars. Digital technology has damaged the industry. I own a lot of digital content, but I am back to buying record albums 90% of the time. I still have albums I purchased new in the 70s that sound great.
