    Buddy Rich is the greatest drummer to ever walk the Earth. Joe Morello is in 2nd place. Every other drummer is 100 levels below these two drum gods. Be well

    Some drummer's have different bone structures of their hand and wrist angles- etc- so not everyone will feel comfortable with the traditional Jazz grip I personally like it a lot - makes me feel more like a painter with my left hand ...i believe if you stick with it long enough you will build up essential muscles in your fingers, hands, and wrists and it will all pay off someday - I like to practice all the grips and try to blend them seamlessly together

    I started traditional in the early 80s - probably because of Copeland - But after hearing Peart, I went to match grip - all of the multiple crashes and things that you can do with match grip - I never went back - To each their own

    I use matched grip. Just works better for me. My doubles are smoother, more speed…Learned playing traditional but my favorite rock drummers were using matched. So I converted. Instantly my doubles were cleaner, so I stuck with it. Buddy is the greatest, no doubt. But look how he’s leaning over to his left side. It’s a wonder he did’nt develope back problems.

    Maybe all he was trying to say was: "every rock drummer {"kids"} today is boring because all they ever do is hit the snare on the 2 & the 4" but "there's a lot more to it than that" when you're actually playing the drums as a musical instrument rather than just serving as a human metronome, keeping time.

  • @owenmcgee8496

    Drummers who play traditional grip maybe have far greater mastery of tone, especially when playing on a snare. With a lot of matched grip drummers, nearly every beat played sounds the same. But I don't know because I can't play traditional grip. And I haven't sat behind a kit, messing about with the matched grip, for about a decade now. How the snare is tuned will affect tone too obviously.

  • @theskorpian
    @theskorpian 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    lmao that grip was invented to get around the strap used to hold the snare when marching, it literally served no other purpose. if you use it, great, but there is no benefit to it on a kit or modern setups. buddy used it because that's how he was taught and for no other reason

    Aren’t there clips of him switching to matched grip when he was younger? There’s one video of him ripping with matched grip while playing caravan. He didn’t use it for the whole performance but he used it for a good portion. Weird.

    Every talk show I’ve ever seen him on (and I saw plenty during the 60’s and 70’s) seemed to prove that, while he was an incredible musician, he must’ve been an awful person to live with. He had a terrible way of talking down to people. I’m surprised Johnny Carson put up with him. He came across, in interviews, as a pompous self-righteous jerk, I’ll never forget him telling Mike Douglas that country music wasn’t worthy of his talent.

    Traditional grip was created out on nessessity in the military two or three hundered years ago due to the angle of the drum when marching.

    The ironic thing is in the 80s he started using a matched grip for some of the funkier songs his band was playing. Apparently, he discovered that a matched grip is better for some things. Most of the best Rock drummers back then were Jazz influenced and used both types of grips. The best of them were just as good as Rich. Neil Peart was a convert to the Traditional grip later in his career as described in this video. th-cam.com/video/w8lo_FZ5SWM/w-d-xo.html

    • @nyobunknown6983

      @@ScottMartinD Neil Peart, Steve Gadd, Cozy Powell, John Bonham, Ian Paice. Danny Seraphine, Danny Carey, Vinnie Colaiuta just to name a few. Neil Peart, Vinnie Colaiuta and Danny Carey in particular were/are exceptional with odd time signatures which Rich never did. Carey and Peart's drum kits are huge with all kinds of percussion and electronic triggers. Rich would be totally lost in a kit like that. Rich was a ground breaker and deserves his place in the greatest list but as with all things, subsequent drummers built on what he did and took it to another level. My list doesn't include any of the great Bebop drummers of the 40s, 50s and beyond who went well beyond rhythmically what Rich did with his swing style.

    The man played pro since he was a child and can cook anyone past, present. His musicality is as fine as his skills. He is the street when it comes to set drums. Hes been cheap shotted a million times and like a true street ball player will school your ass both verbal and got game. IMHO only a few world class players like satchmo, bird,miles, coltrane, chick, etc. truly can get him. Jazz is actually the most brutal art form known to man. It is the literal decontruction and reinvention of music itself. Like Bird, all became terrified to cut heads w the man. My fellow Americans, be proud to be part of this incredible American invented artform, we are the true warriors of creativity. (Yes hiphop be the child o daddy jazz)
