Very nice
Thanks, I appreciate it.
That’s a sweet rockscape looks really good
Thanks, I appreciate it. Definitely miss that old tank.
You need to get a good RO system you’re killing your tank with that tapwater. You need to pre-mix your salt water before you dump it in your tank. You need to put a heater in it in the bucket you’re mixing of salt your tank set up is really cool thoughusing tapwater you’re getting chlorine and that is killing your fish and coral
And what is your salinity at?
And what is your salinity at?
I have a good six stage RODI system on the way. With that, I’ll have more time to pre-mix my salt and preheat the water. I know it doesn’t depict it on camera, but I have roughly 78° tapwater and I allow it to mix for 30 minutes to an hour in the sump prior to sending it back into the main display tank. I know it’s not the most ideal but with a new revise set up on the way I shouldn’t experience that problem anymore
I usually shoot for 1.025 to 1.026 this is a large tank so depending what my salinity looks like prior to the water change determines if I do 2 and 1/2 cups, 2 and 3/4 cups or 2 and 1/4 cups of salt. It takes a long time to swing the salinity
maybe an algae scrubber in the sump?
Thanks for the advice. I’ll have to look into that.
I like the 2nd reef rock design so much flow
Thanks, I agree. When I made the first rock formation, I didn’t put much thought into it because I didn’t understand the dynamics of a tank.
@@CrustyCreations833I’ll be watching the progress of your drop off peninsula tank I think it’s the best form
I will add another Dope! Lovely
Dope Man keep the videos coming
Thanks man, I appreciate the feedback
what are you dosing ? All for Reef ?
I used all for reef and reef Roids throughout that timeframe I had this tank running.
Dope tank dude keep up the videos!
Thanks
The same had happened to me before I got a RODI system. The way I combated it was to do big water changes and take out 1 section of rock every week and scrub off all the angle with a brush and put it back in. It took me a month to do the complete scape. Never let the rock dry just scrub it as clean as you can and put back into tank. Substantial water changes and you’re good. It might take you a month to clean up but it won’t come back. Also consolidate you corals under 1 light fixture and turn off the rest for a month. That’ll slow down the algae growth while your cleaning up
I’ll give that a shot, thanks for the feedback.
Add copepods. Lots. Dont worry, how old is the tank. Ignore the dbags. If theyve never delt with algae issues then they have professionals maintaining their tanks
Are you testing nutrients are definitely very high especially if you’re losing fish
the fish bones next to your favorite coral tho lol
Who told you two weeks of Blackout was the appropriate time?
I don’t think there is an exact timeframe for a “blackout”, but rather it’s just a preference of the individual. I’m sure depending on everyone’s scenario they would use a different timeframe to help reduce the trauma to the corals. I would assume everyone’s goal is to do it long enough to reduce the algae growth without permanently damaging the corals. Thanks for the feedback
@ This may be the issue with your approach. I can tell, even by the way you measure Salt when mixing…attention to details and following a program do not seem to be your forte. People on YT are being charitably kind to you by not pointing out how disastrous your approach to reef keeping really is. I hope you are actually doing much more than you appear to in the video. 1. Using tap water. Big No. Not following directions for the Salt….No. Must bring to same temp as Display Tank. Test salinity of the mixed saltwater before adding. 2. Your technique for cleaning your sand and rock is lazy, haphazard and uses the wrong tools 3. Have some pride and clean the glass before you show people your tank 4. You seen to be stuck in a pattern that you were successful with your smaller tank. If your practices were the same as now, you were only lucky and that tank would have collapsed eventually too. 4. Please start from the beginning by watching as much Bulk Reef Supply YT channel (BRSTV) as you can, before proceeding.
You have to bring the new saltwater up to tank temperature before adding it in. Every product you buy, including Salt has specific directions. Start following them. Are you even checking Salinity at all ? Is the rest of your life this half azzed ?
The temperature of the water is within 3° of the tank. I have a temperature sensor in the bottom tank where I mix the salt water back into the system. And it barely fluctuates more than 3° up or down. If you watched the whole video, you would see that I allow the water to circulate for an hour or two prior to powering back on the return pump circulating the water into the display tank. My target salinity is 1.025, for the most part it holds that every water change and if it varies 0.001 % i’ll usually adjust for it on the next water change. Thanks for the feedback, you bring up valid concerns that I hope other people see and think about if they make it to the comment section.
You should Not clean your filter media w tap water.
I agree but that’s all I have at the moment. I’m waiting for the RODI setup to come in
@ You put the cart before the horse.
My prescription for you is 8 hours on YT watching only BRSTV.
Your perception is almost correct, It was more along the lines of 8 1/2 hours on BRSTV. Thanks for the feed back
@ If you watched that much BRSTV and are still doing these things, maybe the hobby isn’t for you.
That looks dope
What brand of light are you using?
On this tank I used a Radion XR30w G4 Pro.
I see that you are not using an RODI system. I would stop using tap water; it is definitely causing your algae issue! You are going to be in a never ending battle with algae as long as you are using tap water. I would find an LFS that makes saltwater and use that for water changes until you get your own RODI system. Aquatic life makes cheaper ones you can get straight off Amazon.
Clean up crew. But just remember algae is also part of the system
RODI WATER CHANGE, CHEMI-CLEAN, CUC
RO/DI with zero measured TDS is definitely a must if you wanna rid yourself of that algae, followed by routine beneficial bacteria dosing. Cleaning crew added will also help keep it under control in conjunction with the previous mentioned.
I did a bottle of beneficial bacteria when the tank first started, but I may have to constantly dose it. Thanks for the feedback
@@CrustyCreations833How many people have to tell you to stop using water straight from the tap?
Oh my
It’s a bacteria, not algae. Get a UV sterilizer.
I have a small UV sterilizer set up in the sump.
You could try having the sump directly below your main aquarium, the fact that you have it in the basement generates a lot of travel in terms of pipes, and I would recommend a better skimmer and for twice the amount of water that your main tank has, I recommend one of the reef octopus brand and perhaps the injection of ozone that would control your algae problem a lot.
I put the sump in the basement because I was concerned about having too much weight on my floor.
Ugly algae= too much light
I Reduced the time, my lights are running by two hours, and I reduced the strength by 15%
I love the tank but i would do completely cover the tank (cut trash bag ) make sure no light gets in there and CUC would be clutch
Thanks for the feedback. I’ll give that a shot.
Ur room is too bright
I’ll try and black out the windows next time
A robust clean up crew will knock down most if not all of the hair algae. Also looks like you have great growth of coralline algae!
Thanks, I put these bars in my sump to help introduce trace elements that get absorbed overtime.
Is that tank a DIY build?
Kind of if you click on my first video, you can see me putting the tank together.
I believe you should wrap the tank if you doing a black out
That’s a good idea I’ll give it a shot. Thanks
Turbo snail! /clean up crews make a big difference in algae. I had the same algae on your rocks just not as much. I have a small tank and 1 turbo snail cleaned it all up in a week. Love the drop off tank!
Agreed! A good cleanup crew would love this tank!
Water from the sink? This is where your problems come from. Something leaches bad things in the tank.
I would go crazy if ny tank looked half as bad as this one. If this was my tank i would take out all the rocks, brush them down and blesch them, get brand new live sand, and reset this tank.
Thanks for the feedback. I’m more interested in how to overcome a problem rather than taking the easy way out and doing a hard reset. I would hope to eventually resolve my problems and gained the experience to share to others on how to do the same rather than them also taking the easy way out.
My god what a disaster this guy letting this tank get to these conditions. Wow, people like him should not be in this hobby.
I would agree with you that it’s in rough shape at the moment, but the tank will eventually rebound
@CrustyCreations833 i apologize if i was a little rude but why dont you brush off all the rock and siphon the algae out and give that tank a deep cleaning
I like how built the drop off reef. It’s a smart build. What’s the material you’re using for the outside white covering like to sump bottom panels?? If u have a link I would appreciate it.
I went to Home Depot and cut thin wood panels to fit the dimensions of the tank. Then I use some Zeus clips to secure the one panel to the tank so I can gain access to it. The other side is nailed in and it’s not removable. a.co/d/aQjP9FM
I picked up an oil extractor myself for the S3 and was kind of scared to use it. This has been very helpful. Thanks so much.
I appreciate the feedback. When using it just double check that everything is tightened real good for it to work most efficiently
Can be your lights second can be bad filtration or you missing bacteria. Good luck on meantime, put a little bit of vinegar to get rid the alg….
I’ll give that a shot, thanks for the feedback
Have you looked into how much blue light you are pumping into the tank? Eliminate the blue or get a light that lets you remove the blue and you should improve your algae.
Thanks for the feedback! These are fully adjustable lights so I’ll try and trim back on the blue and reduce the overall strength a little bit.
If you are using tap water, that is your answer. Get a decent RODI system and start using that mixed with salt during water changes. After a while entirety of your system water will be that. This will help immensly. Cheato would do great too, not as a replacement but plus to the RODI system.
I have an RODI system in the works now, so hopefully that will help address some of my problems. I need to look into the Cheato, I was always interested on how it worked, but I don’t know what I really need to keep it alive. Thanks for the feedback.
@@CrustyCreations833 There are special refugium lights that will grow cheato very efficiently, but frankly, a little space in the sump and a cheap, freshwater light and it will grow just fine.
Cant you take those ornaments out of there??
What “ornaments” are you concerned about?
@ the reef ones with all the crud on them? Maybe replace with new ones?
Dude just restart it..... and do more research on reef keeping.... Id lower the tank so you dont need a ladder, and id do it barebottom to be honest... RODI unit.... UV light... and dont feed as much.... RESEARCH
Thanks for the feedback. I had a smaller 30 gallon brief tank prior for five years with great success. Just experiencing a learning curve on a much larger system.
You have some real issues here. There should be NO reason for all this algae if you are taking care of the tank properly. Lights are either on too much or not enough. You are not properly dosing the aquarium to control the algae. You also way overfed all the fish. About 1/4 of that food is adequate. All that left over crap is going to cause algae issues. Are you using a UV sterilizer? Maybe this just isn't for you. I feel bad for the tank inhabitants.
I do use a UV sterilizer. I think between an RODI water set up reducing the amount of time my lights are running and maybe feeding not as heavily everything should start to fall back in line. I’ve had a 30 gallon nano tank in the past that I had great success with, but when I bought a new house, I decided to go for a bigger tank. I do agree with you that I feel bad for the life in the tank, but I’m just working through the growing pains of understanding the dynamics of a larger tank.
100% agree with everything you said....
Seriously? You think it’s okay to just tell the guy “this isn’t for you”? Wtf. He’s just like you or anyone else who wants to have a beautiful aquarium in his home. He’s not torturing fish. A salt water tank is not that simple and takes some trial and error. So instead of being a dick about it why don’t you try and actually help without being condescending and potentially discouraging others from enjoying the hobby?
@@UnwokePaul YES SERIOUSLY! It's disgusting! These are living animals that he is torturing because he's not taking care of them right. If he's that lady or doesn't care, then he shouldn't have them.
Salt should be premixed for hours even up to 24hrs using rodi water and a pump there’s your problem right there . Are you even testing the salinity
Lights out for a week total black out and reduce feedding
RODI water, lawnmower blenny, diamond goby trust me, they will do wonders
I’m gonna start pricing out a RODI water system. I’ve had horrible luck with diamond goby’s. Regardless, if I have my glass covers on my tanks or not, they somehow still jump out.
They aren’t too expensive . Maybe 100-200 for a good one . Idk what county you are in ..
@@CrustyCreations833 i hear you, ive had 3 in my time and 2 have jumped. ts pmo
you should switch the pump and return for the uv because at the end of the day the output is going right back into the input so you're essentially sterilizing the same water over and over again
That was my initial goal so that way when the return pump pulled from the bottom tank that was 100% sterilized water. But it may not be a bad idea to put the UV light on the return so it’s sterilizes all the water coming back into the sump from the main display tank. Thanks for the advice.
I have 2 md size return pumps (redundancy) for return and have my UV on one . With dc pumps I can adjust flow depending on what I was want to accomplish (free floating algae vs. fish disease) . I don’t have really any algae in my system ..
That is a nice drop off .. looks like you are running a lot of light . What are you parameters and have you tried a large cleanup crew w/ urchins ?
I do run pretty high strength light for roughly 12 hours a day, which is a little much. I might try scaling it back to eight hours a day of light. I do need to re-up my cleanup crew. It’s been a few months since I added snails and hermit crabs. I’ll try and pick up a few dozen this weekend.
Hey dude, nice tank you got there other than the algae. How long have you have the tank running? One tip I can give you on the algae is to use RODI water when doing water changes as tap water can fuel unwanted algae growth and add other issues.
Thanks for the tip. I’ll look into RODI systems. It’s gotta be excess nutrients in the public drinking water. Plus, it’s a good idea to strip out the chlorine.
It’s been running since late June 2023.
@@CrustyCreations833oh it’s tap water? Yeah that won’t help, every time you water change you’re putting dirty water in
hey man you turned off comments on your most recent video, however I went through a similar hair algae outbreak in my salt tank at about 5 to 6 month range and tried everything and it wouldn't go away, until i put two phosguard bags in my sump system and it removes all the phosphate from the water which in turn the brown hair algae cannot survive mine died off in about 2 weeks and has never came back! Try it out!
Thanks for the advice. I’ll have to try that out.
