The toys infants and toddlers really need | Ask Coach Nina

Do I need them all? Wil...

Yes to children as young scientists experimenting on their parents! Enforcing boundaries with children is a parent's way of showing they are reliable. This discussion also warrants a disclaimer that some children might disagree with their parents about everything because they're wrong about everything 😊.

Ha, you are so right! Children are our mirrors, and so often their behavior is a reflection of our inner struggles. If we fail to hold boundaries, they walk all over us. If we are unreasonable in our demands, they have no problem protesting against our nonsense. The first and most useful step in understanding the frustrating actions of a child is to ask, what are the causes and conditions that made this moment/behavior/challenge possible?

"Is it insulting to install socket protectors when you have an infant at home?" Great comparison with making rules to address a child's darting!

I remember the moment when my entire perspective on discipline and boundaries shifted, and I finally saw them as acts of love, rather than punishment (as they are so often framed in our society). I'm glad this idea made an impression on you as well! It can be such a game changer in the energy we bring to raising young children.

Such great advice. 41 years ago, when I had my first child, I took this same approach. Andrew loved the pots and pans cupboard, the Tupperware collection, plain blocks, and the laundry basket. We never bought many toys, actually, and when we did, they were open ended. I remember when Andrew received a Xmas gift when he was about 3. It was a battery operated little roller coaster with 3 cars you just sat on the track and then turned the switch. That was it! His interest in it lasted maybe a day. And I love the pictures you included in this video! Well done!

I bet the box that toy came in could have held his interest for days 😉 Thanks for sharing this story. It really is amazing how quickly children grow tired of something that they have no real control over or say in. Their drive to manipulate, experiment, reorganize, and decode is so strong that even the most thrilling and entertaining toys can get old fast. But you knew this from the get go, and kept things simple. Smart mama!

I love the clips from the Yummy Mummies, and then hearing your reactions. It's very engaging! I maybe would have liked even more of "what not to do" by showing more of the tutors suggestions. I was curious to see more of her.

Yes, me too! They left pretty much all details of the tutor's suggestions out of the episode. So, many of my talking points are based on what I've seen before with school readiness lists.

I see that too. She’s got great intentions, but like so many parents, is at a total loss for how to respond. Hopefully this respectful approach will spread and give families the answers they’re looking for!
